Cloth3448/3

Kente cloth composed of four hand woven cloth strips. Each strip has a wide white band flanked by two smaller white bands running down the length of a dark blue background. The strips have been stitched together along the long edge, and then embroidered with designs within small rectangles. Every second rectangle, offset from the neighbouring column, contains an embroidered band of red, flanked by gold, and then light green in horizontal bands. Fringed ends.

Thorn Carving3446/3

Thorn carving depicting a group of eight musicians. Figures adhered to square particle board base. All are sitting in a circle on cylindrical stools, facing one another. All figures are wearing long, short-sleeved tunics. Figures in corners wearing hats. Four figures are playing different types of drums, two by hand and two with sticks. Drum in bottom left corner has a white and yellow cloth strap and is being played with one curved stick. Other figures are playing a stringed instrument, horn, pot(?) and wood block instrument. Stools, figure outfits, horn, pot(?), drum heads, sticks and square base are light yellow-brown. Figures, the shells of the drums and wood block are dark brown. Donor initials on base.

Mask3461/16

Wooden mask of a queen character. Humanoid face with closed eyes, a wide nose and rounded cheeks. Mask is wearing a crown with a large triangle on top. The edges of the crown curl inward and it is carved entirely in relief. Hair, also carved in relief, goes halfway down the sides of the mask. Mouth is closed and smiling. Wood is yellow-brown. Mask has slit holes for the eyes and holes for the nose. Metal eye hooks are drilled into the back of mask, with a knotted string through them, for hanging. Ink inscription inside of mask.

Wooden painted mask of the king character. Humanoid face with curved and narrow eyes, wide nostrils and rounded cheeks. Sides of mask painted black and silver, simulating hair, with an open space in between, simulating a bald patch. Mask has a circular, silver ornament painted in between the eyes, with a dark blue centre. Small silver dots, with dark blue centres, surround the central circle. Two semi-circular lines are above the ornament, painted silver and black. Eyes are sunken and rimmed in black. Mouth is slightly open, painted red and rimmed in brown. Black moustache, done in black and silver, just above mouth. Black, dark brown and silver lines painted across face to highlight the cheeks and forehead. Entire mask is painted maroon. Mask has holes for eyes, nose and mouth. Hole drilled into top of mask with knotted string through it for hanging. Ink inscription inside of mask.

Man's costume pants (part b) and two sash-like belts (parts c-d). The pants are made of a solid bright red synthetic fabric, with elastic waist and cuffs. Two long sashes (parts c-d) are composed of two rectangular pieces of red cotton sewn together.

Wooden painted mask of the character Rama. Humanoid face with wide eyes and nose and cropped hair. Mask has hair carved along the top edge, painted black, with floral ornaments throughout. Central ornament in hair has additional curvilinear motifs carved into it. Teardrop-shaped ornament in centre of forehead, in between wide eyes. Pieces of skin nailed above eyes, as eyebrows, and above smiling dark red mouth, as a moustache. Gold painted shells(?) are inlaid in the mouth as teeth. Face is painted gold and all ornaments are bronze. Eyes are green-grey, rimmed in red and black. Mask has holes for eyes and nose. Holes drilled into either side of mask with rubber band attached for hanging. Ink inscription inside of mask.

Lizard Figure3448/16

Very small lizard made of beads. The light teal body is formed by stitching the beads together with black thread. The lizard has a brown stripe down each side, and orange eyes. There is a single teal beaded loop under the neck.

Case3448/51

Case composed of a long rectangular woven textile, that has been folded in half and sewn together. The bottom edge is closed with a loop stitch in white. On one side there are eight vertical bands in red, dark olive green, mustard yellow, light blue and light green, each with four V-shaped designs embroidered in different colours. On the opposite side, there is a red rectangle at centre with two large side-by-side embroidered diamond-shaped designs with smaller shapes in the space around them. The space around the rectangle is dark beige, and has the same design embroidered throughout in a single row or column. The interior of the case is brightly coloured, which shows how much the exterior has faded.

Wooden painted mask of the character Garuda. Dark green bird-like face with bulging eyes, pointed beak and four fang-like teeth. Light blue and black scalloped headdress on top of mask. Central scallop is red and has three triangular protrusions in front of it, overtop of a semi-circle. Curved triangles, painted red, along top of headdress, in front of the scallops. Curvilinear and stylized linear motifs painted across all of headdress in white and dark green. Red horn-like shapes painted on either side of headdress. Beak mouth is wide open, with tongue sticking out. Mouth is painted red, with small pointed teeth along the top and bottom edges. Two fang-like teeth on either side of mouth. Outer rim of mouth painted black with white lines throughout. Similar designs along sides of the mask. Eyes are painted yellow, orange and red, and are rimmed in red. Outer ears are painted dark green, inner ears painted pink and trimmed in red. Garuda is wearing red triangular earrings, with linear and circular designs painted in white on them. Both ears are attached to the mask with plant fibre ties. Mask has holes for eyes and mouth. Piece of skin(?) nailed to top of mask, on back, with a hole in it, for hanging. Ink inscription inside of mask.
