Gable MaskC1515

Gable mask with an oval, carved face painted in red, black and white with protruding eyes and ears, a protruding tongue, and a series of holes with twined sennit fibre fed through and knotted. A wedge of wood is attached to the top on the reverse, and two wooden loops are carved out of the wood at the bottom reverse.

Cylindrical flared coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with double loop rim and flared foot. Watch-spring base construction. Beaded rows of alternating cat-tail grass (?) and dark cherry bark. Same configuration on foot. Fibre used to tie remains of loop work to rim.

Incised trade brass head with wooden shaft that has brass studs on the handle. Attached at the bottom of the handle, there is a flat triangular cloth with a beadwork design of yellow and black arrow-like-shapes on a light blue background and having a twisted coil cloth fringe. There is also a string of coiled yellow, black, and light blue beads in a pattern of alternating rectangles.
