String Puppet3472/23

String puppet of a peasant(?) man character. He has carved and painted chin-length brown hair, beard and moustache, a row of exposed teeth, long upturned nose and green eyes. On his head he wears a carved and painted green hat with a brown band and large carved feather. He wears a light brown long-sleeved shirt with a dark brown vest overtop with a beige, red and black plaid scarf. He wears navy blue pants with many patches and red ties on the sides that end below the knee. He has tall carved boots painted black. The control stick is attached to his head by a long metal rod, with strings extending from the control stick to limbs. The body is jointed at the elbows, knees, shoulders, and hips – with fabric upper arms.

String Puppet3472/21

Small string puppet of a prince or king character. He wears matching dark blue tunic and pants. The tunic has a metal gold belt and a large bright blue plastic(?) jewel decoration adhered to a shield-shaped textile on his chest. The tunic and pants are hemmed with bronze embroidery ribbon. He wears a long red cape with off-white fur collar. He has painted light grey-blue socks and brown shoes. He has pink lips, blue eyes, and reddish-brown ear-length hair, moustache and beard. On top of his head is a red and blue and yellow crown. His hands, legs and face are carved. The control stick is attached to the head by a long metal rod, with strings extending from the control stick to limbs. The body is jointed at the elbows, knees, shoulders, and hips – with fabric upper arms.

String Puppet3472/25

Small string puppet of a male character. He wears a long purple robe that is cinched at the waist, with a black and gold panel insert on the front of the skirt. The tunic has gold embroidery ribbon trim down the front of the top, around the waist, bordering the panel, in three rings around the sleeves, and around the hem. The long sleeves each have a thin cape overtop that is purple with black and gold lining. Under the tunic he wears black pants. He has painted white socks and gold shoes. He has red lips, green eyes, blue eyelids, and chin-length black hair, moustache and a pointed beard that greys towards the ends. He has greyish-pink skin and a large hooked nose. On top of his head is a tall red cylindrical hat composed of painted paper that is taped together and nailed to the head. His hands, legs and face are carved. The control stick is attached to the head by a long metal rod, with strings extending from the control stick to limbs. The body is jointed at the elbows, knees, shoulders, and hips – with fabric upper arms.

It has a high round collar and 13 black polyhedron buttons sewn along the front opening, with two more of each button on each sleeve cuff. He has painted white socks and black shoes. He has red lips, brown eyes, blue eyelids, red cheeks and grey-brown ear-length hair, moustache and beard. On top of his head is a round black hat. His hands, legs and face are carved. String Puppet3472/20

Small string puppet of a water spirit(?) character. Character is carved and painted. He has a green face, green facial hair and chin-length green hair. He has a large round blue eyes with a large rounded nose that extends out. He wears a short dark green vest with gold-coloured blanket stitch along the front opening and arm holes, and green fringe along the bottom. Underneath, he wears a red sleeveless shirt over a long sleeved green top with red ties at the cuffs. He wears long dark green pants with red ties at the cuffs. He has painted red socks and pointed light brown shoes. His hands, legs and face are carved with his right hand posed like it should be grasping something. Puppet is moved by a metal control rod with a wooden crossbeam, with strings attached to head, shoulders, hands and knees. A small clear sticker label with the number '5' is affixed to the crossbeam.

String Puppet3472/9

String puppet of a water spirit character. He wears a dark brown button-up coat with subtle red and black vertical stripes and a thin red ribbon belt. The coat has three dark brown buttons - one at the front closure and one on each sleeve cuff. The coat has two pockets on the hips and one on the chest. There are green, red and yellow ribbons pinned to the chest. The belt is held in place by two different toned round metal pins. Under the coat he wears a red shirt with a red tie that is held in place by a honeycomb-patterned metal pin. He wears short brown-grey tweed-like pants that end at his calves. The pants have red embroidery tape around each cuff. He has a green beard with a long, green parted moustache, and he has green chin-length hair and green eyebrows. His eyes, cheeks and lower lip are red and his upper lip is silver. The jaw is hinged and movable. His neck, arms, and legs are all green, and his feet are webbed with red claws. His hands, legs and face are carved with his right hand posed like it should be grasping something. Puppet is moved by a metal control rod with a wooden crossbeam, with strings attached to head, shoulders, hands and knees.

String Puppet3375/1

String puppet. Puppet carved from a section of bamboo with three stacked faces carved in the upper half and a notch cut out of the top. The puppet is lightly carved with the designs painted in blue, red, teal and black. The top face has eyes that are underlined in red, a red down-turned mouth, black steeply angled eyebrows and a moustache and split chin beard. The second face has solid black angled eyebrows with blue lines above them, red outlined eyes, and a mouth with two incisors and two long fangs. The third and bottom face, has red outlined eyes with bright blue mask around the eyes, small black moustache, wide red lips with teeth showing, and three different designs of concentric circles along the jaw alternating between blue and black. Each figure has movable limbs, which are controlled by strings inserted into three holes on each side and have circular cross-sections of bamboo attached to the ends of each pair of strings at the bottom. The top two sets of limbs are longest with three cylindrical bamboo grass beads and long blade-like structures at the ends. The lowest set has two cylindrical bamboo beads and a circular cross-section of bamboo at the end. The carved designs extend into the lower portion of the bamboo and has two concentric hearts at centre. The back is carved with artist's signature(?).

Hat3619/1 c

Part of a three piece gbariye (also see 3619/1 a-b). Hat has a circular top and straight sides that flare out slightly towards base. Background is white, with dark blue-purple diagonal lines overtop. Darker and wider diagonal lines cross others throughout; blue-purple thread is metallic. White and dark gold embroidery across top of hat, and around opening. Embroidery on top consists of central sun-like design with concentric circles around it; scallops and loops along edges of circles. Border design around opening consists of alternating knot and sun-like design. Interior of hat is lined with white cotton.

Pants3619/1 b

Part of a three piece gbariye (also see 3619/1 a and c). White pants with wide waistline that taper to narrow legs; made up of strips of cloth stitched together along the long edges. Background of strips is white, with silver and dark blue stripes overtop; threads are metallic. Openwork bands, made up of repeating crosses, along lengths of strips at varying distances. Heavy dark grey embroidery around leg openings, and along lower half of outer seam. Designs are an assortment of curvilinear, circular, and geometric motifs; together they form a crown-like pattern. Seam pockets on either side of waist, along front of pants. Small opening at front centre of waistline, for fastening and tightening pants.
