Dance Hat3532/7

Conical corroboree dance hat made of bark; exterior is completely wrapped in green-grey rope-like fibre. Front is decorated with a wide, vertical orange band, bordered with two white bands; small feathers throughout bands. A wooden rod is inserted through the top of the hat and has a large bundle of emu(?) feathers bound to it; feathers held in place with white strands, rod secured with white pigment along hat interior. Feathers are a mix of grey and dark brown.

Mai Mask3532/4

Mai mask consisting of a long and narrow face. Mask is made of wood and is covered in small white shells inset in dark brown-black mud. Area around eyes and nose is plain wood and coloured dark orange. Eyes are made of inset cowrie shells, highlighted with black paint. Sharp nose bridge runs through centre of face. Nose has orange nostrils with black highlights, before extending into a snake that protrudes past the chin; raised design elements on snake's face. Round shells, with swirls in their centres, inset in the centre of the forehead and below the nose, on either side. Plant fibre cord runs around bottom edge of mask, with twisted fibre strands attached, imitating a beard. Additional fuzzy fibre on top of head, imitating hair; inset cowrie shells border bottom of hair. Top half of mask back is concave; bottom half is flat. (Hanging hardware on back.)

Breast Ornament3532/2

Woven breast ornament shaped like an inverted triangle with a naturally coloured, braided cord extending from the top; rest of ornament is coloured with orange pigment. Eight boar tusks extend from either side of the ornament; first two are pointed up, rest are pointed down. Additional boar tusks are threaded through a loop in the front centre of the ornament, pointed down. Woven protrusions extend from either side of the ornament, below the fit set of tusks; protrusions are thin rectangles with rounded ends. An open oval-shaped protrusion is woven underneath the central boar tusks. Above the central boar tusks are two cowrie shells, attached horizontally; a line of vertical cowrie shells extends from below the woven oval to the bottom of the ornament. Loop attached to bottom edge; back is undecorated.

Basket3534/3

Woven rectangular basket with a telescoping lid; lid secured with twisted ties that loop over basket, functioning as a strap. Basket is naturally coloured and undecorated. Basket base is formed with a coiled rod, wrapped in plant fibre. Lid covers entirety of basket and is decorated with dark brown designs. Patterns on front and back consist of: plain line, repeating hourglass-like shapes, geometric and meander patterns with "X"'s throughout, and two plain lines. Patterns on sides are connected lines framed with the same repeating hourglass-like shapes and two plains lines on the front and back sides. Top of lid has a thin rectangular band in the centre with repeating hourglass-like shapes; plain lines surround the band. Top of lid is formed with a coiled rod, wrapped in plant fibre; additional rod runs through centre, attaching front and back. Base of lid formed with stiff coils, attached with additional stiff coils, dyed dark brown. Groupings of feather decorations attached to each corner on top of lid, two more groupings on front and back bottom edge; feathers are a mix of red, grey, yellow, blue and green.

Opening is formed with internal and external coils of stiff, dark brown plant fibre; coils are attached with white-yellow ties. Lid covers entirety of basket; naturally coloured interior and dyed exterior. Exterior is red-brown with dark brown decorations throughout. Patterns on sides consist of: two plain lines, braided band, meander design with "X"'s throughout, and a plain line. Top of lid has a thin rectangular band in the centre with repeating design of zigzags and hourglass-like shapes; plain lines surround the band. Opening of lid is formed with internal and externals coils of stiff, dark brown fibre; coils are attached with white-yellow ties.

Comb3534/7

Comb consisting of two wooden bars and grass(?) fibre teeth. The fibres are inserted into the top bar and are separated from one another with cotton strands; strands are woven into a repeating yellow and black zigzag pattern. Bottom of the weaving is anchored to the second bar, which is wrapped in green thread. Teeth extend past the lower bar and are undecorated. Stiff braided ties secure bars together, on either side of weaving.

Pouch3534/8

Woven basketry pouch, or purse; made from a rattan-like material. Pouch has a rounded base and front; sides taper inward at top and back of pouch flattens. Four triangular protrusions extend from top of basket; outer triangles shorter than inner. Long shoulder strap is attached to back of inner triangles. Pouch opens at the top with round flap and has a front loop closure. Below opening is a band with fringe along its bottom edge; band circles front of pouch, back is undecorated. Red yarn tassels are attached to the two outer triangles; additional yarn decoration attached to loop closure.

Apron3534/2

Small beaded apron with feather fringe along sides. Beads are made of seeds threaded onto a woven cream-coloured, cotton frame; cotton creates fringe along the bottom edge. Apron is light brown with dark brown meander patterns along the top and bottom edges. Feather fringe is a mix of black, red and yellow. Small ties along the top edge, on either side.

Spoon3522/43

Large wooden spoon with carved decorations. Bowl is long and thin, with a deep well. Four channels moulded across bowl base, creating three high ridges across length. Area where bowl meets neck is scalloped. Neck flares outward before tapering in at handle; decorated with incised diamonds. Area where neck meets handle is scalloped. Handle is oval-shaped with a semi-circular cutout in the centre. Bands of raised diamonds carved across front of handle; inverted triangle created in negative space at base of handle. Linear and triangle designs incised across back of handle. Braided plant fibre cord knotted through handle, for hanging purposes.
