Cantonese Opera RobeN1.629

Blue robe with a round neck, tapered sleeves with hoof cuffs and a side opening with brass frog closures. There are slits in the centre front and back. The collar border has a gold peony motif on a red ground, edged with gold braid and pink trim. The cuffs have gold braid outside and black cotton lining inside. The robe lining is natural-coloured linen.

Cantonese Opera VestEdz1819

Long multicoloured vest with appliqué roundels. The vest has a centre opening with frog closures. The sides are open, held together by three turquoise bands. The collar border has peony and butterfly motifs in blue and green on a mauve ground. On the front and back is a diamond pattern in turquoise, blue and ecru. In the centre is a large roundel with a yin-yang symbol in silver and gold. The four surrounding roundels have with different variations of silver bars on a black ground. The border around the edges has a prunus motif in pink, purple and blue on an orange ground edged with pink. There are tin reflectors, green glass eyes and white fur on the front and back. The inside lining is natural-coloured linen.

The skirt is brown with nine rows of light coloured flax strips. The strips are unraveled into brown fibres at both ends. The top end is woven into the brown cloth of the skirt. The bottom end is short and becomes a fringe on the bottom of each row of strips. There is a thick braided fibre band across the top of the skirt.

Skirt composed of flax fibre dyed dark brown and woven to form a waistband from which emerges a fringe of light yellow flax strips that have been beaten into fibres intermittently and the beaten areas dyed dark brown to form an overall geometric pattern featuring diamond shapes.

Skirt424/4

Cape composed of flax leaves that have been scraped into fibres, woven together wih a band at the waistband and using regularly spaced single pair twining the top half of the skirt. Each row is overlaid with intermitently scraped leaves, resembling stalks, and the bottom half is comprised mostly of free-moving stalk-like leaves. Several tufts of grey downy feathers are attached intermittently near the waistband.

Table Mat1712/36

A machine made rectangular cloth piece. Central panel has a main design consisting of a white-on-white design within the weave of the cloth of a central rose, surrounded by two thin oval bands. A design of roses and other flowers (with blue bells ?) fills the space between the second oval band and a rectangular band to which a bouquet of flowers is tied with a bow at each corner of the rectangular band. This is surrounded by a row of square dots. Bordered by a row of holes.

Apron1635/3

A black apron made of shiny fabric with multi-coloured floral embroidery, wide lace along the bottom, and long waist ties. The two sections of the apron are joined together down the centre by elaborate lace-like cream-coloured thread work. At either side, there is an embroidered design consisting of red, orange, green, and white flowers, grapes, and apples on spiral vines with leaves. The embroidered design begins partway down the middle and makes a right angle to go along the bottom of each side with a bouquet in each inner corner. Bottom lace design is consisting of part orange-red, and part green flowers surrounded by a spiral cream-coloured design that has orange-red thread running along through it. The lace border is sewn along the bottom hem which has been finished with blanket stitch. The waist ties have a main design consisting of red, white, and dark purple flowers bordered by a green, white, and dark purple geometric pattern on a black background.

Lace Doily1712/14

A hand made circular lace doily. A solid piece of commercially woven cloth forms the inner circle. A hand crocheted lace band containing two kinds of flowers alternating, and surrounding the central cloth which is bordered by a crocheted band. An airy outer scallop design forms the outer rim. One of the flower designs is a six-petalled flower while the other flower design is only on the top side of the doily and is a four petalled-fllower with a leaf(?) stretching to each side of the flower.
