Cantonese Opera HatN1.784

The folded hat is blue and rectangular, decorated with appliqué and metal-mirrored discs. The front of the hat has a flap and the right side folds inwards twice. On the outer side of the hat is a large white circle with a bird in the centre. Surrounding the circle are tuffs of white rabbit fur. Around the circle are motifs in silver thread. The bottom corners of the hat are rounded. Three sides are bordered by a silver and pink border. The designs on the back of the hat are the same as the front. Inside the hat folds are motifs in silver thread with pink and green details on an orange background. Along the bottom is a blue border with brass discs, edged with purple with traces of gold. Covering the entire surface of the hat are metal discs with mirrored centres. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.780

An off-white square hat with the front, and the back angled to meet each other like a roof, and having the top edge curved. The front has bat, and peacock motifs with a white tile, 4.8 x 3.6 cm. The back has a longevity design with dragon, and butterfly motifs. Colours include yellow, blue, gold, and green. Decorated with circular mirror inserts edged with brass-coloured metal. There are two very long green fabris streamers at the back with an arrow-shaped-like pattern at the bottom consisting of a green print on a white background edged with pink, circular mirror inserts edged with brass-coloured metal, a pink floral print on a white background edged with a blue geometric pattern, and semi-rounded brass-coloured pieces. There are two off-white ties at the back.

Cantonese Opera Stage CurtainEdz1823

A very large yellow silk curtain that has an embroidered design with a sequin design at either side. The embroidered design is consisting of a central bird that has a pink body, red plumage on its head, and blue peacock-like feathers with yellow, orange, and red centres. There are brown grasses with an orange-red flower below the bird and a purple flower to the right with a pink flower at the end. A horizontal line of four red writing characters (characters) is above the bird. At each side of the bird, there is a blue four-clawed dragon on vertical orange band that has cloud shapes in shades of green, blue, pink, and red. Below each dragon, there is a pot that has a mint green rim, a dark purple body, and a pink bottom. Above each dragon, there is a red lotus bordered by blue. The right sequin design has a horizontal line of four blue characters in the upper section, a vertical line of three red characters in the middle section, and two horizontal lines of four blue characters with a red dot below in the lower section. The left sequin design has a horizontal line of three blue characters in the upper section, a vertical line of three red characters in the middle section, and two horizontal lines of four blue characters in the lower section. Both sequin designs are bordered by a black sequin band that has a geometric design within, and multiple five-lobed protrusions around it. The shape of each border is consisting of three lobes around the top, and bottom with three lobes around the middle. Below the left sequin design, there is a light blue band with two horizontal lines of six (upper), and seven (lower) off-white characters.

Cantonese Opera ShoesN1.766 a-b

Pair of tiny shoe forms with blocks of wood inside, carved to simulate very small shoes, and extended in "shoe-horn" shape to provide actual foot support. All concealed under embroidered cover for false shoe with tall cotton cuff attached. False shoe: leather and brass sole, wedge heel; floral motifs, pink, brown, mauve, on turquoise ground; upper: floral motifs, pink and turquoise on ecru ground; edging: brass and mirrors, with twisted copper wire, on dark blue ground. Cuff: floral ribbon appliqued at junction with uppers. Black cotton rectangle appliqued above at front with attached ecru loops (4) - balance of ecru cotton. Loops hold cord to keep cuff in place.

Composed of two strips of hide as well as one horizontal and one vertical inserted bead work panel of predominantly triangular and diamond-shaped patterns, the horizontal panel has upward pointing black triangles on a white background while the vertical panel has red, green, and yellow diamond shapes outlined by white and black within alternating yellow and green square backgrounds. Two string loops of ostrich egg beads are at either sides and yellow and black and red and green trade beads hang from the back of the piece.

Headband1003/24

Red, blue and white beaded headband with a circular design on ends and a beaded fringe along one side. The circular design has a red centre with white and blue petals. Along one side of the circular ends is a clear and red beaded fringe. In the centre of the red band are white, green, yellow and blue points. On the back is a yellow and green diamond pattern with red, blue and white centres.

Ramayana Headdress1568/6 a-f

Ramayana headdress composed of a green velvet covered crown (a) that has a bulbous base that narrows and then widens again to a smaller bulbous top with a gold finial. The crown is also ornamented with pieces of gold painted skin that have been cut into ornate geometric shapes, some of which protrude outwards, and these have silver sequins and clear glass beads sewn to them. The base of the crown has a band of multiple pointed pieces of gold painted skin ornamented with sequins and beads. Attached at the back of the headdress is a figure's face made from gold, red, black and white painted skin. The figure has a pointed head, fangs, protruding black hair at the base, and is also decorated with sequins and beads. There are black straps on the inside at the back for adjustment, and two yellow straps at the sides. Accompanying the headdress are the following: a triangular-shaped gold painted skin ornament (b) with sequins and beads and two curled ends to which is attached a gold cord; two gold painted skin ornaments (c and d) with curled ends, sequins and beads, as well as two hanging multicoloured tassels on each; and two gold painted skin ornaments (e and f) consisting of an ornate piece with sequins and beads, each attached at a perpendicular angle to a cross-shaped piece with yellow ties at each end.

Rounded, circular flaring, fibre woven container that has a bowl shape. Exterior has intricate white beadwork on cloth backing in geometric horizontal, concentric bands. Lower beadwork is 5.6 cm. deep. with 'extending' beads above, and a pattern of x's, zig zag, x's, x's, x's, and vertical lines at the centre. Upper beadwork is 2.5 cm. with a pattern of vertical pairs of lines with a light blue band underneath, x's, and 'dangling' beads below.

Black, red and yellow material sewn into a skirt-like tube, covered in beading; geometric beaded patterns and stylized figures in yellow, black, red, green and blue. Short beaded fringe along the bottom. Round metal sequin-like beads spaced along the bottom edge. Vertical strip of material and beading down the garment's centre, lined with flat, white beads on either side and having a longer fringe with pom-poms at the bottom.

A woman's pleated full wrap-around red skirt. Gathered onto a waistband. Skirt has three horizontal rows of hand embroidered multi-coloured floral motifs consisting of white flowers that have purple centres with green, purple, and yellow leaves. Waist band trimmed with embroidered ribbon having a main design consisting of yellow and blue flowers with mint green leaves, braid, glass beads, and metal sequins. Black and gold-coloured braid attached at each end of the waist band. Lined and stiffened with starched cotton gauze.
