Cantonese Opera HatN1.797

The folded opera hat is light brown and rectangular with a rounded top piece curling down on either side. The hat has a light brown centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are pink and orange peonies with green leaves and gold swirls and a pink and orange bat. On the inside of both side folds is a red peony with green leaves and gold swirls. The rounded top piece has pink and orange peonies with green leaves and gold swirls. One curled end has a small orange flower and an attached green tassel. The other curled end has a small red flower and an attached pink tassel. The designs on the back of the hat mimic those on the front. There are pink orange and red peonies, green leaves, gold swirls. However, the small flowers on the curled ends are blue. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Necklace composed of twelve long strands of beads held together with seven leather strips through which the strands are strung; the four uppermost leather strips are halved, leaving an opening for the neck. Held together with cloth thongs and a leather strips at the top; beaded fringe at bottom. Alternating rows of blue and black glass beads, brass beads, and elongated polished bone beads. Geometric patterning. Yellow glass beads at the bottom of the fringe.

Hat made of several pieces of fabric, each with a different pattern, with black fabric over the forehead that comes to a point at the front centre and extends downwards in two tapering arms on the sides. There is a long tapering extension at the back of the hat with tassels attached at the tip. Ornamented with metal beads as well as orange, red and whitish glass beadwork around the face, and with metal and shell beads as well as shell buttons at the seams and down the extension at the back. There is also a brooch-like large metal button with a red stone centre attached near the crown of the hat.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.769

The folded hat is green and rectangular, decorated with appliqué, metal-mirrored discs and two long streamers. The hat flares to a point at the top, narrows at the base and folds inwards on both sides. On the front is a large appliqué yin yang design with a scalloped edge in silver and pink thread. Around the yin yang are appliqué leaf motifs in silver thread. The silver leaf motif continues on the inside folds and on the back of the hat. Covering the entire surface of the hat are metal discs with mirrored centres. Along the bottom is a silver border with brass discs, edged with purple with traces of gold. Attached to the back inside edge are two long green streamers. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

A long, rectangular, off-white crepe fabric piece that has embroidered borders. The embroidered border has a main design consisting of red and green beads among red and green thread with white-gold-coloured metallic-like thread in an alternating pattern of three three-petalled profile flowers and a radiating diamond shape surrounded by a two-part laurel-crown-like shape. Each inner corner has the same pattern in a diagonal line with the latter shape at the centre having the former shape at either end. Edges are done in a white-gold-coloured metallic-like thread spiraling into a three-leaf clover-like pattern. One end is unfinished.

Elongated, rectangular, taupe sari covered with evenly spaced, gold floral-shaped designs: small leaf-like designs and larger curvilinear motifs. Designs are embroidered and feature golden sequins. One lengthwise edge has rectangular strips of a lighter shade of taupe material sewn along its reverse, creating a tube-like channel.

Woman's choli panel; consists of front panel with sleeves. Made of red light-weight silk which is heavily covered with intricate embroidery and round, inset mirrors. While the panel has roughly cut edges, the bottom and ends of sleeves are neatly finished with embroidery. There is heavy, coarse, brown fabric at the neck. The embroidery is executed in silk thread, predominantly gold-coloured with pale rose, grey-green and black. The size of the circular mirrored pieces ranges in size from roughly 3 mm to 2 cm.

A beaded bag with two artificial tortoise-shell handles. Black velvet bag is lined in a blue, green, and white floral cotton ? print. The body of the bag is attached to the handles by twelve double strips. Each velvet strip is lined with navy taffeta patterned in white beads. The body of the bag has a wide band of floral patterned blue, red, green, yellow, white, puprle, and silver-coloured beads on both sides. The whole body of the bag is bordered with orange, and white beads. There is a looped fringe of red, blue, and yellow beads.
