Pillow End PanelN3.26

A pair of embroidered panels on a horizontal rectangle of purple silk. Each panel is finely embroidered with an arch shape open at the top made up of flowers, leaves, and four white cranes with red heads in flight, one of which is near the bottom while the other is near the top of the side of the arch shape. The flowers are predominantly in shades of blue and green. Some details are couched in gold thread. Within the arch are four wide v-shapes of embroidered flowers and leaves opening toward the centre of the panel.

A pair of identical vertical rectangles of dark blue silk damask heavily embroidered with silk thread in many colours. Many motifs are outlined with gold thread. The central image of each is a white feline with black spots, edged in fine white stitches representing fur, with a human-like face, and its head turned toward the left. The embroidery creates a three-dimensional effect following the form of the animal. Above and beside the feline, there are cloud forms in various colours. Two red plant forms are below the feline, and white plant-like forms curve toward the feline. Green leaves coming out of a striped stepped form are directly below the feline, beside which, on both sides, there are rainbow-like forms. Each badge is pasted to a backing of paper.

Blue collar (part c) with embroidery and brass frog closure. The collar is rounded at the back and pointed at the ends. On the front are butterfly and peony motifs in gold, pink, purple, green, white and yellow. There is pink trim around the edges. The back lining is white cotton.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.674 b

The folded hat is blue and rectangular, decorated with appliqué and metal-mirrored discs. The hat flares at the top, narrows at the base and folds inwards on both sides. On the front is a large white circle with a bird in the centre in blue, green, black yellow and pink thread. Surrounding the circle are tuffs of white rabbit fur. Around the circle are lotus motifs in silver thread. On the folded sides the bird and lotus motifs are repeated. On the back are lotus motifs in silver and pink thread. Along the bottom of the hat is a silver border with brass discs, edged with purple with traces of gold. Covering the entire surface of the hat are metal discs with mirrored centres. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Pillow End PanelN3.4 a-b

Two virtually identical square pillow end panels (parts a-b) embroidered on red fabric pasted to paper. Each has images in an inner square framed in yellow thread which is surrounded by images also framed in yellow thread. The images on the inner square consist of a pair of birds facing each other with long tail feathers, one with a pink body and the other with a yellow body. Below them are six baby birds with a seventh on the back of the pink bird. There is a green triangular shape between them and flowers with leaves above. Images in the outer rectangle include a white flying crane at the top, a pine tree on the right below which is a purple rock shape, below which, there is a mushroom shape with green leaves. At the centre bottom, there is a kneeling grey deer, behind which, there is a blue-green rock shape. Above that, facing upwards, there is a tortoise with a white wavy shape coming from its mouth, beside which, there is a stalk of bamboo.

Waist BagN3.2

A small flat bag made of red and dark blue silk damask and yellow silk embroidered on both sides. At the top, the red silk is folded inside where it is sewn with an invisible seam to the white cotton lining. Main body of the bag is shaped like a vertical rectangle with triangular projections on both sides created by folding and holding the folds in place with a circular pink cylindrical cord. A yellow tab, pointed at both ends, extends around the bottom of the bag. The red part of the front is embroidered with flowers outlined with gold couching and two pheasant-like birds facing each other while the red panel on the back is embroidered with a fungus. The blue points at the front and the back are embroidered with butterflies with two Chinese ? characters on the front, one light green and one yellow. The cord ends at the front with elaborate knots in red, gold, purple, and light green, culminating in five tassels wrapped in gold at the top, one in each of those colours plus a red one.

An inverted pyramidal-shaped hat that has bird, flower, and butterfly motifs, appliqued in pink, yellow, mauve, green, and grey on a white background edged with white fur all on a black background. Stiffened, and glued. Decorated with circular tin reflectors, and mirrors. There are two plain ties at opposite corners.

Tassel Ornament2644/1

Ornament made of elaborately knotted blue-green silk cord, with three large tassels attached at the end opposite the loop formed by the cord at the upper end of the ornament. Below the loop is elaborate knot with six loops protruding from the sides, below which is a silver ornament strung on the cord, with a coral bead at each end. Below the silver ornament is another elaborate knot, below which are suspended the three tassels, each wrapped at the top with fine silk thread of the same colour as the tassel. The silver ornament is urn-shaped, with a loop at each side from which hang silver butterflies each with two red and two blue enamel dots. There is a raised Chinese character on each side of the urn, on each side of which are panels inlaid with yellow, blue, and brown enamel. Above the urn are floral shapes formed of silver inlaid with coral beads.

Open-top HatEd1.298

Cap of black satin decorated overall with gold stamps. The cap is made of two halves joined at a centre seam from front to back, except for the opening at the top, round when worn. This opening and the forehead area are edged with narrow piping. The edge of the cap is straight across the forehead, but then is cut at a right angle so that it covers the ears. The lower edge forms a circle from the right angle to the top opening. Above the edge of the circle and forehead area are gold stamps shaped like flowers. The outer fabric is folded under at the ears and threaded on a cord. A small area of bright blue satin shows in the lining behind the ears and inside the top opening, but the rest is lined with black and grey cotton fabric. At the back of the top opening is a copper ornament shaped like an inverted heart cast in a lotus design, from which are suspended three tassels, one dark pink, one yellow, and one pink. An identical copper ornament is sewn to the front. Below it is a complex knot design in pink cord, and three tassels, two dark yellow and one dark pink.

Open-top HoodEd1.291

Open-top hood made of dark red silk damask with added ear-flaps of blue silk damask edged and lined with white rabbit fur and filled with grey cotton batting. The red damask is patterned with three roundels, each with two dragons surrounding a Chinese character. The blue damask is patterned with bat ? shapes and a Buddhist swastika. The hood is constructed of two halves sewn together at the centre of the forehead and centre back, but with an opening at the top edged with black piping ending with a short slit at the back. The hood is cut straight across the forehead with two deep scallops edged with black piping on each side. It is edged entirely with two layers of skin with black fur, one facing inside and the other facing outside. A flat red silk cord woven with green and gold geometric designs crosses the opening from front to back, ending at the back in an elaborate knot made of pink and dark blue cord, below which are five red tassels wrapped in gold thread. At the front there an elaborate double knot of gold, pink, and yellow cord, below which are seven red tassels wrapped in gold thread. The hood is lined with bright green felt, and has fragments of paper attached to it with long white running stitches.
