Open-top HoodEd1.289

Open-top hood made of purple floral-patterned silk damask with added ear-flaps of fuschia silk damask lined with white rabbit fur, with a loop at the end of one and embossed brass button at the end of the other. The hood is constructed of two halves sewn together at the centre of the forehead and centre back, but with an opening at the top edged with black piping ending with a short slit at the back. The hood is cut straight across the forehead with two deep scallops edged with black piping on each side. It is edged entirely with two layers of skin with black fur, one facing inside and the other facing outside.. A string of coral-coloured beads crosses the opening from front to back, ending in a broken jade disk at the back, below which are seven pink tassels wrapped in silver thread. At the front there an elaborate knot of gold cord, below which is a teardrop shaped piece of jade, below which are nine pink tassels wrapped in silver thread. The hood is lined with dull green cotton flannel.

Bracelet2594/2

Gold bracelet consisting of an outer surface covered entirely with carved design and crosshatched detailing. Main animal image is a raven in profile with the head facing the left. Beside the back of the head are the talons and on the right side of the bracelet is the wing. Bracelet ends don't meet at back; edges are slightly rounded. The signature inscribed on the inside reads 'PJanze 79.'

Shadow Puppet1374/81

Shadow puppet of male figure with gold face in profile. Represents the character Arjuna, Pandhawa Prince. Long neck with six black lines, projecting out from body. Long nose, open mouth with three teeth. Hair tied into curved plait that joins at top of head with two purple, white, green, gold, yellow and red attachments. Skirt is gold and brightly coloured with bird motif, torso is bare. Hair and skirt finely perforated. Long, jointed arms attached to controlling rods. Each hand has one red and two blue rings. Feet are joined heel to toe by red strip.

Man’s short multicoloured ceremonial jacket constructed from a patchwork of colourful brocade textiles and trimmed at collar and cuffs with velvet. The jacket is voluminous, with very long sleeves; a T-shaped garment with centre front opening, without closures or fasteners. The front opening is finished with a very wide border (approximately 23.5 cm), which extends to the back of the jacket to form a high collar at centre back. This border consists of four different bands: a 2.7 cm wide band of striped, multicoloured embroidery; a 10 cm wide band of red silk brocade embellished with gold metallic figures of cranes and Chinese(?) characters; a 5.6 cm wide band of finely embroidered blue, green, red, pink and white stitchery in a T-shaped repeated motif; and a 5.1 cm wide band of black cotton velvet textile. The same multicoloured embroidery and black velvet is used to finish the cuffs. The jacket is lined with blue and red light weight silk brocade.

Gold coin from Persian Cyprus. Obverse: Heracles, right facing, fighting. Body is on the left side. His right leg is braced backward while his left leg is braced forward. Holds a bow with cloth draped over his arm. Reverse: lion killing a stag. The lion is on top of the back of the stag.

Eagle Amhalait1791/1 a-f

Round, gold pendant (part a) on a gold chain (part b). The pendant has a three-dimensional design of an eagle face with blue abalone eyes, and is framed by flat pieces of abalone shell all the way around the outside of the face. The pendant came in a rectangular hand-made wooden box (part c) with a lid (d). The top of the lid has silver clasps for lifting, while the underside has silver hooks for displaying the pendant. There is also a purple velvet pillow (part e) inside the box for storing the pendant and a purple velvet bag (part f) that fits over the outside of the box.
