Part (a) Large rectangular coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with coiled handles and lid, part (b). Parallel base and lid construction, reinforced by cross-stitches along end edges. Fully imbricated with cat-tail grass (?) and horizontal design of three bands, two cherry bark and middle one dark cherry bark, which dip into a large 'v' on all sides. Coiled handles over rawhide on each short side. Flanged lid with coiled handle at center is imbricated along rim in red cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?), and fully beaded in alternating rows of red and dark cherry bark separated by two rows of cat-tail grass (?).

Imbricated design of vertical bands of squares connected by a line between each. Vertical rows alternate between red cherry bark outlined squares, with cat-tail grass (?) centers, and connecting line, and black cherry bark outlined squares, with cat-tail grass (?) centers, and connecting line. Design extends to foot but smaller square.

Slightly boat-shaped rectangular basket box (part a) with a lid (part b) made of palm leaf overlaid with stiff woven grass of both dark brown and cream colour. Pattern resulting is a series of interlocking diamonds and zigzags. The base of both the basket and lid are a solid piece of wood sewn into the basket with fibre. The basket and lid have slightly convex long sides. The basket (part a) has two slats bound for the rim which are separated from the main design by a horizontal, black, braided edge. Main design consists of five lozenge patterns around the sides bofdered by counter-clock-wise pointing diagonal lines in dark and light brown. The lid (part b) has a longitudinal lozenge-patterned band with perpendicular zig zags at either side while the sides have a vertical zig zag pattern and are eded with black braids.

The fan is divided into four colourful geometric panels meeting in the centre; the top panel is red, the two side panels are green and the bottom panel is orange. In the orange panel surrounding where the handle attaches to the fan, there is a stylized floral designs in black. The wooden handle is also black.

Flat FanN3.49

Flat fan made of finely-split bamboo flaring out from its attachment point to a long wooden handle painted black. Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached, which is straight and at right angles to handle. Fan is covered with lacquered paper on both sides, patterned with a design of four triangles radiating from centre. The top triangle is black, the one where the handle attaches is smaller and yellow, and the two at the sides are red. The area where the triangles meet is covered with two swirls, one green and yellow. The area surrounding the handle on both sides is covered with a black paper cut, and the area immediately surrounding the handle is painted orange. The fan has a narrow edging of black paper. It is inserted into a split in the handle, which is shaped like a pointed oval where it covers the fan, which is attached with two rivets. Iconographic Meaning: The three swirls represent the “Tae-guk” symbol on the Korean flag, which stands for harmony. The rounded shape of the handle where the fan is inserted represents a peach, symbol of long life.
