Official Emergency HatEd1.283

Official emergency hat with flat round brim attached to crown shaped like truncated cone. Inside of hat is made of paper painted black, with a woven texture showing. Outside of hat is covered with fine red silk, with edges trimmed with red paper, and with vertical strips of red paper on each side of the crown, at the bottom of which are small red tubes. On the underside of the brim from the tubes and strips are attached two red silk ribbons that are tied together. Crown of hat projects slightly below its point of insertion into the brim. Brim is somewhat wavy and has black and brown stains.

Wide, slope-sided, round tray with overlaid yellow-brown bear grass design on a brown ground. From the rim, there is the following: a brown continuous zigzag on yellow-brown band; a brown band; a narrower yellow-brown band; a narrow brown band; a wide area of brown interlocking triangular stepped design on yellow-brown; a narrow brown band; and the centre is overlaid except it is now torn at the centre. Outside is undecorated but shows some bear grass.

Flared square coiled basket with bifurcated stitches, and parallel slat construction at base. Large geometric zig-zag design is imbricated in light yellow-brown grass, dark and red cherry bark. One cross in zig-zag in dark cherry bark with grass center or red cherry bark and grass center. Hide handles are knotted on inside of basket.

Rectangular, coiled basket with a foot. Handles are 36 and 37 cm. long, respectively. Split stitching over slat foundation and rows of cherry bark and grass beading. Design consists of the following from top to bottom: a row of white-yellow; a triple row of black; a triple row of white-yellow; a triple row of red; plain; a triple row of white-yellow; a triple row of black; plain, a triple row of white-yellow; a triple row of red; a triple row of white-yellow; and plain. Foot is beaded with dark red-brown cherry bark.

Large round openwork basket with foot, consisting of 5 rows of wide slats covered with cedar strips, alternating with 4 rows of loop work. Bottom is watch-spring coiled with bifurcated stitches. Beading at top edge in dark cherry bark. Beading on wrapped slats were checkerboard squares in dark or red cherry bark, but have mostly come off. Most of the loop work around the rim is missing. Foot is beaded with two rows of dark cherry bark with wide grass in between.

Basket, circular as viewed from the top, with bundle foundation, watch-spring coil bottom, split stitching and imbricated geometric design in light yellow-brown diagonal bands flanked by a series of triangles. This motif repeats around the basket with the triangles alternating between two sets of black and one red.
