Hunting Bow3559/7

Strung wooden bow with carved tips and grip; string made up of plant fibre. All elements are stained(?). Carvings on tips of bow consist of a curved plant motif; space between plants is cutout. Grip protrudes from belly of bow and is shaped like a sitting bird. String is twisted on either end, to secure loops around string nocks. Woven diamond in centre of string; bottom half of diamond is cutout, top is solid. Space between string nocks and carvings on tip are wrapped in plant fibre; grip wrapped in same fibre.

Bamboo spoon with thin slanted handle and deep bowl. End of handle is bent, extending straight out and attaching to bowl; bowl tilted at same angle as handle. Bowl is cylindrical and its opening is cut diagonally; minor lip along edge closest to handle.

Drum3521/1

Circular wood drum frame with animal skin stretched over the top and bottom. Skins are laced together with thin strips of cane, creating a zigzag pattern around sides of frame. Light-coloured trident design on batter head, along top edge; resonant head is undecorated. Looped tie threaded through cane strips along top edge of frame, for hanging purposes; carved wood handle extends from bottom edge of frame. Handle is cylinder-like in shape, with a pointed bottom. Three heads circle top edge of handle with six decorated rings below. Rings are an assortment of bulbous, angled and flat shapes; decorations are incised lines, geometric motifs and raised scallops. Point of handle has three sides; bird beak, snake and intertwined rivers decorate sides. Drum contains a rattle.

Carving3532/5 a-b

Carving of a female figure standing on an oval-like base (part a). She stands with her feet shoulder width apart, hands at her hips; depicted wearing a grass skirt and assorted jewellery made of twisted fibre and circular shells(?). Her face has linear and curvilinear designs painted across it in white; eyes are inset cowrie shells. Hair is black, with a white band painted underneath. Large hornbill sitting on top of woman’s head; neck is extended with head tilted back. Head and neck of hornbill are yellow, rest of body is black; eyes are inset cowrie shells. A crocodile, balanced on its tail, supports the back of the female figure; painted black. Two snakes stretch from her shoulders and have their heads resting against the base; done in black with white and orange stripes. All animals have intricately carved features; hornbill has additional curvilinear designs. Top of base is a light orange; sides have a channel carved into them, with ovals carved in relief throughout. Donor tag attached to snake on right side of base. (Left wing has broken off hornbill, part b.)

Comb consisting of two wooden bars and grass(?) fibre teeth. The fibres are inserted into the top bar and are separated from one another with cotton strands; strands are woven into a repeating yellow and black zigzag pattern. Bottom of the weaving is anchored to the second bar, which is wrapped in green thread. Teeth extend past the lower bar and are undecorated. Stiff braided ties secure bars together, on either side of weaving.

The fibres are inserted into the top bar, made of bone, and separated from one another with cream-coloured cotton strands; strands are woven into a repeating concentric diamond pattern. Bottom of the weaving is anchored to the second bar, made of wood, which is wrapped in cotton. Teeth extend past the lower bar and are undecorated. Stiff braided ties secure bars together, on either end of weaving; ties wrapped in cotton. Red and yellow feathers inserted into either end of bone bar.

Brush Holder3484/1

Carved bamboo brush pot. Entire body of container depicts a man crossing a raging stream in a boat. He has a long beard, large ears, and is wrapped in a robe. Under his right arm he has a bundle of three scrolls, left arm is covered by cloak. To his right, there are waves in the foreground and a mountain in background, with trees at the peak. To his left are waves rolling towards him. The wave directly in front of him has a small smiling face. In the top left corner of the scene there are trees with low hanging branches. All designs are done in a mix of low and high relief. Openwork carving throughout. Base of container is concave.

Basket3512/28

Circular basket with flared opening. Rim protrudes outward at an angle, walls curved into a square base. Walls made of dyed grass strands and woven together with naturally coloured reeds, covering the walls in a small checkered design. Additional reeds woven throughout, creating a floral motif. Sections of grass are woven together in centre of base, forming a crossed square. Concentric, four-petal flower-like design surrounds square. Largest flower petals extend upward to basket opening. Patterns are visible on interior and exterior. Basket is light yellow, designs done in dark brown.

Circular basket with flared opening. Walls gently slope into a convex base. Walls decorated with a zigzag pattern. Between the zigzags are hourglass-like designs. They alternate between small ones, that reach halfway down the walls, and larger ones that extend from the rim to the base. Larger ones have curved prongs on top. Base dyed dark brown-red. Patterns are visible on interior and exterior. Basket is light brown-grey, designs are done in dark brown-red.
