Spear2948/157

Bamboo and wood spear. The bamboo head is long and concave, dyed on the interior and tip, and bound to a narrow upper shaft made of wood with string and beeswax. This is inserted into a slightly larger bamboo shaft and secured with rattan and beeswax. Both of these binds show traces of lime. The shaft has been thinly shaved towards the join and a few thin lines have been scratched around the shaft just below this. The nodules have been shaved smooth.

Wood and bamboo spear. Bamboo head is long and concave, pointed at tip, bound to a narrow wooden upper shaft with string and beeswax. This is inserted into a slightly larger bamboo shaft and held with rattan and beeswax. The lower shaft has been thinly shaved towards the join and a few thin lines have been scratched around the shaft just below this. Although the nodules have been shaved for a smoother shaft the sections of the bamboo are still pronounced.

Long bamboo spear. A carved bone head with eight barbs in two staggered rows, bound to a narrow wooden upper shaft with string and wax. This is decorated with carved diagonal patterns filled with lime and is inserted into a larger bamboo shaft and bound with rattan and beeswax. The lower shaft has been thinly shaved towards the join and a few thin lines have been scratched around the top and butt.

Wood and bamboo spear. The long wooden head has been carved with five pairs of perpendicular barbs and a long encircling line, filled with lime. This is inserted into a bamboo shaft and bound with woven rattan and beeswax. The shaft has been shaved towards the join and a few thin lines have been scratched just below. Near the shaft bottom are remnants of a bright blue fibre or dye.

Long spear with carved bone head. The edges of the head have four barbs each, staggered, along the sides. Head is bound to a narrow wooden shaft with string and wax. The convex side has remnants of a light green dye over the middle half of the head. The wooden shaft is carved into diagonal patterns filled with lime. It is inserted into a slightly larger bamboo shaft and bound with rattan and wax. The shaft has been thinly shaved towards the join and a few thin lines have been scratched around the shaft just below this. The nodules have been shaved smooth.

Belt2948/106

The main body of the belt is 11 cm high with twelve columns consisting of six horizontal painted stripes alternating between dark brown terracotta ochre and yellow-brown and white pigment(faded). This is surrounded by a border of ruddy-brown plaits with a broad loop on the left end and a tightly wound loop on the right that holds several braided ties, which may have been previously wound together, as one is thicker and made up of several braids and the others are single strands and somewhat frayed. Above the columns, two cords of ruddy-brown grass and two of dark brown and yellow-brown stripes, criss-cross to form five diamond shapes with incomplete ends. On top of these are paired lines of light grey seeds, one section is missing. Three narrow braided tassels with loose ends are attached to the bottom of the belt.

Nose Ornament2948/40

Nose piece (Bipane). The two shells of a clam are carved into crescents, tied together with fibre through a small hole in each piece and glued with beeswax. The shells are white on both sides with striations on the outside. The striations on one of the shells shows the curving lines of the bivalve and has a charcoal-grey section and some dark red residue.

Nose piece (Bipane). Two large shells of a clam are carved into thick concentric crescents, tied together with a bright yellow fibre through a small hole in each piece and glued with beeswax. The outside is a light tan in colour with brown striations. The underside (front) is ivory in colour. The two crescents are set quite far apart.

The horizontal striations on the back are dark brown and light yellow. The underside is ivory in colour. One carved shell is larger than the other. The curving tips sit close together. The beeswax join has speckles of white over it.
