Iwami Kagura MaskEd5.2489

Iwami kagura mask (Iwami kagura-men;石見神楽面), made of paper mâché, of a serpent-like face with a movable jaw and ears, a long snout, and two protruding pointed antler-like appendages at the top of the head. Strands of long black hair are attached via holes across the top of the brow. The mask is painted light green with a red mouth and tongue, red inner ears, gold teeth and eyes, red around the nostrils, black at the base of the antlers and yellow at the tips, and lines in black, grey and white are used to create the illusion of hair around the lips, on the ears, and on the eyebrows. Two pieces of white fabric are attached at the bottom of the mask and painted with scales in dark grey, yellow, orange and red.

Feather CapeC1463

Cape composed of various feathers of brown, white, red, and green in a checkered design on an openwork twining weave. The plant fibre twining is carried in pairs with pitch in opposite directions on a weft of dark brown human hair. The feather ends are caught under the rows of plant fibre twining with the tips protruding downward. A heavy three-strand braid of dark brown hair runs across the top. There is a plant fibre cordage tie at each top corner.

Long, tall wood sculpture. Has green oval inset eyes surrounded bya downward curving red band pointing toward the thin nose which has a bit of hair ? underneath at either side. The open red mouth is showing black teeth. Has a red body with the hands holding a long, thin serrated object in front of it while a smaller length of the same serration is at either side to the elbows. Wearing a tall headdress that is has a black helmet-like feature with four thin upward curving protrusions all around that are decorated with serrations and downward pointing red and black triangles. Standing on a plain, cylindrical wood pedestal.

Tapered, cylindrical, brown wood shaft that has four rows of teeth with opposing sides of equal length. Shark teeth are secured by twisted fibre string. The longer sides have fifty-three teeth while the shorter sides have twenty-two teeth. A band of triple black hair interwoven with woven palm leaf decorates the wider end of the toothed portion. Three equally spaced bands of black hair are along the length of the toothed portion.

Red woolen trade blanket covered with groupings of feathers attached to fur-trimmed discs of dyed porcupine quills; hair tassels anchored to pieces of purple felt-like material are also attached. Blanket is an elongated rectangular piece with two dangling feather tassels at the bottom and extended strips at the top, creating a circular head-like opening.

Set of three brushes: a-b) two brushes with wide off-white bristles (the bristles of part a are stained light pink), a black wood ferrule with incised lines that tapers towards the cylindrical bamboo handle that has a piece of paper with a printed image of a bird and Chinese characters and a length of twined and knotted fibre threaded through a hole in the handle near the end; c) a brush with short black bristles, a cylindrical bamboo handle with a black end and a short loop of woven black fibre attached to the end. Each brush has incised characters on the handle shaft near the end: the lettering on parts a and b are in red, and on part c it is in black.

Chiefs Mask/Oil SpillNb3.1443

Chief's mask with wrinkled brow and nose, elongated eye slits, angular cheeks, and a mouth with lips open baring two rows of teeth. The mask is painted or stained grey with the edges of the eyes, the nostrils, and the lips painted red. Long strands of black hair emerge from the top edge of the mask.
