Cantonese Opera HatN1.802

The folded hat is black and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has a black centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are red and orange peonies with green leaves and swirls. These designs are repeated on the inside of both side folds and on the rounded top piece. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. In the centre of the flap is a large red, orange and green peony. Surrounding the flower is a circle of gold scroll designs and orange and red peonies with green leaves. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. The golden features, with added tusks, are repeated on the top piece of the back flap. Beneath the features in the centre of the flap is a large red symbol. Surrounding the symbol is a circle of pink and purple peonies, yellow scroll designs and green leaves. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Long, rectangular shaped, cream textile with a repeated black and turquoise diamond pattern. The large black diamonds have a central floral design. Both the narrow ends have a black line while only one has a faded, think blue strip along with numerous red stamps of various shapes with different calligraphy.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.675 b

The folded hat is pink and blue, rectangular and decorated with appliqué and metal-mirrored discs. The hat flares at the top, narrows at the base and folds inwards on both sides. On the front the upper part is blue, the lower part is pink. One the blue part there is a large white circle with an embroidered bird in the centre. Surrounding the circle are tuffs of white rabbit fur. Around the circle are motifs in silver thread. Inside the folded sides are large white circles with goldfish surrounded with tuffs of white rabbit fur. On the back are motifs in silver thread on a pink background. Along the bottom of the hat is a silver border with brass discs, edged with purple with traces of gold. Covering the entire surface of the hat are metal discs with mirrored centres. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

The hat is green and rectangular, decorated with silver applique and metal-mirrored discs. The upper sides of the hat are indented and edged with gold fabric. The hat is decorated with silver designs, some outlined in pink. Also covering the hat are metal discs with mirrored centres. The bottom of the hat has a white border with brassl discs and is edged with purple. There are two white ties knotted together. The back of the hat has a wire design on back and is stiffened with cardboard. The front has a narrow segment that folds out when the hat is worn. In the centre of the segment is a white circle with a red border surrounded by white fur. In the centre of the circle is an applique blue and pink bird with green leaves. On either side of the centre circle there are similar bird circles, not visible when the narrow segment lies flat.

Pineapple-like head held in place with woven bands. The red-brown wood handle is decorated with woven bands, some plain and some fringed. The dark grey-black head has three horizontal rows of sixteen triangular protrusions all around. Underneath and through the hollow, cylindrical head, there is a long light-coloured woven band. Below, there is an upward flaring, red-brown fringe and two brown woven bands. At the end of the handle, there is a brown woven band coiled around with a downward flaring, red-brown fringe.

Wide sword-shaped brown wood club. 'Blade' has seven vertical designs of spiral scroll lines bordered by a zig zag band at either end along with four shorter ones vertically downward near toward the middle, each of which has a snake head except for three on one side. Emphasized with white pigment. 'Blade' flares outward to a flat blunt end that has holes with knotted string. The 'grip' flares outward to a horizontal zig zag band around the base. 'Pommel' is a relatively flat arch shape bordered by zig zag lines.

Multicoloured cotton skirt with an open back and a tie closure at the waistband. Skirt is made from two identical panels, overlapping at centre front, attached to a wide, unbleached cotton waistband; panels are made from strips of blue, white, green, purple, red, and yellow fabric, separated by gold metallic braid-like ribbon.

Mask (a) with a protruding rim around the sides and top of the face, a furrowed brow, protruding eyes, a hooked nose with flared nostrils, protruding cheeks as well as crescent shapes beside the mouth, an open mouth, and a pointed chin. There is a long hemp fibre fringe attached at the top of the mask. The mask is painted with alternating black and white scallop shapes around the rim, a white forehead with black eyebrows, green around the eyes and on the nose, red and white nostrils, black and white designs on the cheeks and protruding crescent shapes beside the mouth, and red lips surrounded by white. The mask is accompanied by five mouthpieces: b) wide mouth with open red lips revelaing two rows of pointed natural wood teeth separated by red triangles, and with a black rim; c) oval-shaped mouth with open red lips, a white interior, and a black band around the edge; d) an orange beak with red nostrils and edges; e) a black muzzle with red nostrils, red lips and natural teeth and fangs; f) a black beak with red nostrils and edges. The mouthpieces each have a protrusion at the back that fits into the mask's mouth. Parts b, d, e and f each have a slight notch at the top centre.
