Rod PuppetIb342 a-e

A three-dimensional male humanoid figure puppet. Has a large head and jointed arms attached to controlling rods. The red face is positioned straight forward and has bulging eyes with red irises, a large nose, facial hair (moustache, beard, sideburns), and details painted in black. Prominent white upper teeth with fangs extending from the top and the bottom row at each side. Wearing a Gelung supit urang headdress with diadem (jamang), sumping, Garuda Mungkur (short-tongued), and much hair from below headdress. The headdress is black, gold, red, blue, and white. Wide shoulders, a slim waist, and arms with ornaments at the wrist, and bicep in red. Skin is painted gold. Hands are held flat and bending back at the wrist. Braided hemp bandolier of green, yellow, and pink. Pink waistband and green wrapping suspended on both sides. Black velvet pentagon below waist (apron ?) with sequins, brocade, and a orange, and brown batik skirt.

Tiger Costume2967/53

Cantonese opera tiger costume, to be worn with mask, 2967/52. Costume is a cotton jumpsuit, open at the front to the waist with gold-toned metal button closure. Legs are wide, and the crotch is dropped with a hole in the back possibly for attaching a tail. Patterns have been stenciled onto the hemp: regularly spaced groups of three wavy lines, concentric wavy circles, and down the spine a series of circles with radiating rays. Uneven lines decorate the cuffs at wrists and ankles.

Tiger Mask2967/52

Cantonese opera tiger mask, to be worn with costume 2967/53. Mask has a bamboo under-structure, covered with coarse burlap and topped by yellow hemp. The mask covers the wearer’s face and head and has a long flap down the back to cover the neck. Several long strings connect the neck flap to the mask, as well as it being sewn on at the rear base of the mask. The face has an open mouth painted red, a small red nose, and holes for eyes with a large green wooden bead attached with wire. Small ears are sewn to the head behind the eyes. Stamped onto the fabric on the back of the head and the neck cover are a series of circles with radiating rays. The face is emphasized with eyebrows, whiskers, and stripes.

Belt949/11

Belt with embroidery, hanging panel and tassels. The belt front is rectangular with cross-stitched embroidery in an abstract geometric pattern, predominantly pink, red and white on dark blue ground. There are two yellow ties at either end. Attached to one end of the belt front is a long, natural-coloured band with horizontal blank lines. Midway along the band is a hanging panel with a pointed top and two lower strips. The lower strips have a geometric pattern on dark blue and multicoloured tassels with beads.

Natural coloured apron with cross-stitching. The apron is rectangular with the upper corner sewn down and a natural coloured band of cotton across the top edge. Blue cotton ties are attached to the ends of the waistband. On the apron skirt are three vertical panels of geometric motifs in red, pink and black on natural coloured ground. The back is unlined.

Kimono Jacket819/4

Grey and white haori (羽織) or jacket/overcoat with wide sleeve panels and a centre opening. The front panels hang down past the sleeve panels. The fabric has a pattern of small white branches separated by wavy vertical lines on a grey ground. There are large white circle family crests or kamon (家紋) representing snow known as yuki (雪) on either side of the centre opening, the back of each sleeve and the centre back. The inside is unlined.

Black hanten (袢纏, also written as 半天, 袢天, 半纏) with blue pattern. The pattern consists of tiny blue lines and dots in horizontal rows. There is a wide patterned band around the neck and down the centre opening. The sleeves are slightly tapered with an opening under the arm. On the inside lower back, there is a large blue square sewn down on three sides. The rest of the inside is unlined.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.809

The folded hat is orange and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has an orange centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are pink, purple and white peonies with green leaves and blue swirls. These designs are repeated on the inside of both side folds. The rounded top piece has a large embroidered dragon motif in green, red, purple, white, and gold. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. The large dragon motif is repeated on the top piece of the back flap. Beneath the dragon and in the centre of the flap is a large purple symbol. Surrounding the symbol is a circle of pink and red ponies, green leaves and blue scroll designs. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.
