Figure standing with arms pressed into sides. Face is carved with deep set eyes with holes for pupils, a flat nose, and a protruding mouth. Fingers are indicated by incised outlines on a flat surface. Back is carved from buttocks to shoulders as a concave triangle. Surface is smooth in some areas and pitted in others. Ivory reveals yellow aging overall with dark brown patches. Was mounted through a hole in one foot.

This is a long curved tusk engraved [scrimshaw is a non-Native term for this type of engraving on ivory] with scenes depicting men hunting walrus in boats, scenes of village huts and food preparation. There is a break in it.

Carved Necklace05.271

This necklace is made from 36 pieces of bone, teeth and ivory that are presently strung on a cord. It is unknown whether they originally belonged together and were on this cord or they have been joined at a later time. Ten of the pieces are elaborately carved into complex figures. Eight of the short teeth have a dot design on them. Other teeth appear to have been left natural and unmodified except for piercing a hole for a cord on one end.
