Carrying CaseN2.966

Red, lacquered, oval-shaped case known as inrō (印籠), with five fitted sections stacked vertically. A purple cord tied at the base is threaded through two channels on either side, holding the five parts together. The fibre cord extends above the top of the box, with the two ends tied together and held in place with a cylindrical green ojime and an amber-like netsuke (根付). Designs featuring insects and flowers are lacquered and inlaid, predominantly in gold and black on the exterior; the interior is speckled red-orange and gold. The amber-like netsuke has two black insects painted on it.

Tiffin Box804/4 a-f

Round, five-tiered stacking box with elaborate scenes painted in red, yellow, green and black on the sides. The bottom compartment (part a) has two vertical slats attached at opposite sides; the tops of the slats are joined by a thick horizontal handle with a decorative, rounded centre. Stacked on top of the bottom compartment are three more compartments of similar construction (parts d-f); a round red tray (part c) fits into the top compartment. The lid (part b) has a raised circular handle and is covered with concentric bands of red, yellow and black patterning.

Circular box with a carved red lacquer exterior that has arabesque, chrysanthemums and peonies in relief, and consisting of a lid (part b), a base (part a) and a stand (part c). The top of the lid has an elaborate landscape and garden scene with human figures engaging in social activities. The edges have key patterned borders. The interior of the box and the bottom of the base are black laquer.

Bobbin Threader1350/1 a-f

Brown wooden bobbin winder or threader resembles a small tabletop spinning wheel. The wheel, which is mounted on the right hand side of an oblong box, is connected with twine (original missing) to a fitting mounted on the left hand side of the box; small handle mounted on the outside rim of the wheel. An arm with a detachable rotary device is attached on the left hand side and can be folded out of the way when not in use. There is a small storage drawer in the box.

A red lacquer model temple (part a) with a roof (part b). The temple (part a) has three sides closed with glass and one shaped arch opening surrounded by a fence along both sides which leave an opening in front of the shaped arch opening and on its opposite side. The roof (part b) tapers upward along all four sides to a smaller square top at the centre. There is a bronze bell at each of the four corners of the roof (part b).

Miniature RackN2.902 a-b

Miniature clothing rack (part b) and shelf cabinet (zushidana; 厨子棚) (part a). Gold circular designs on dark brown wood; brass-bound edges decorate both pieces. The shelving cabinet has three levels below the table top: an open shelf, above middle and lower levels that both have open and closed door sections, on opposite sides. The doors on the middle level have a human figure decoration on the inside. Doors on the lower level have an animal decoration on the inside. The sides have circular cut-outs. The clothing rack (part b) has three horizontal bars, one at the top, which extends past the side bars; one in the middle, and the lower piece which is part of the base that has curved feet at each end.

Writing desk (part a) and storage boxes (parts b-m). Writing desk has a long flat rectangular surface which flares upward and outward at each end, and two legs. Each box has gold circular designs on dark brown with orange tassels dangling from a metal ring at either sides. Each box has a tray inside and a lid on top. The boxes fit together as follows: parts b, f and g together; parts c, h, and i together; parts, d, j, and k together; and parts e, l, and m together.

Folding paper hand fan with black lacquered bamboo ribs. Both sides of the fan are painted a solid, metallic gold colour with burnished effects around the edges and folds. Two red and white tassels on a long, knotted orange cord are attached to the base of the fan.
