Costume ChestN1.866 a

Cantonese Opera costume chest with curved lid and false bottom. False bottom 3 1/8 in. deep, has 1 1/4 in. holes, 8 1/2 in. from either end, front and back, for insertion of carrying poles. Curved lid is covered with leather (dark brown) secured by hand wrought iron nails. Chest is painted red with large circular floral motif in centre front with a green vertical line of characters on either side. Above center is Arabic numeral "2", which also appears at upper left hand corner. Above the central numeral is printed "Made in" (first line) and "Kum Lon Chang Co. Chong Yuen Fong Street, Canton". Pair of iron rings on either side of central numeral "2". Iron handles mounted vertically. Rings and vertical handles on back of chest also. Leather and wrought iron braces on corners. A wrought iron handle mounted horizontally on each end of chest. Discoloured paper label hanging from handle on right side, "Admiral Line".

Above center floral motif is Arabic numeral "6", (which also appears at upper right hand corner) and above this is printed "Made in" (first line) "and" Kum Lon Chang Co. Chong Yuen Fong Street, Canton". Iron handles mounted vertically and iron rings on either side of numeral "6". The same handles and rings appear on back of chest, under three hinges on lid. Iron handles on each side. Wrought iron braces on corners.

Pair of Cantonese opera shoes with wooden platform soles carved in one piece that have a flaring heel under the instep, and light grey silk uppers with embroidered prunus flower motif in off-white, green, brown, pink, orange, yellow, and light purple. A butterfly in the same colours is appliqued to each toe. Yellow silk edging at top of shoe and green fabric band just above sole. Brass plates are nailed to either end of the sole. Padded cotton insole.

Pair of pink silk Cantonese opera boots with an embroidered floral motif in light green, medium green, black and white. The boots have platform soles made of cardboard with a leather base shaped with upturned toes and painted white. The top, back, and front seams as well as the ankle are embellished with off-white piping. Off-white cotton lining with padded cotton insole.

Pair of pink silk Cantonese opera boots with embroidered chrysanthemum flowers in dark orange, light purple, dark purple, light pink, red, yellow, and green with leather soles that have been painted white on the sides. The toes are gathered with two seams and a slight protrusion at the top of the foot. There is a two-pointed flap at the back of the heel. Lined with off-white cotton and cotton insole.

Cantonese Opera ShoesN1.748 a-b

Pair of shoes with leather soles and pink silk uppers. There is a row of domed tin ornaments at the shoe edge with a tuft of silk thread hanging from every second one, and four domed tin ornaments on a fabric flap on the heel. On the pointed tongue are domed metal ornaments, a dark pink pompom and a yellow pompom. On the toe is attached a grey silk thread tassel. Just above the sole is a layer of blue fabric. Cotton lining and insole. Off-white and red striped fabric edging.

Cantonese Opera Hoop BeltN1.833 a-c

Blue three piece hoop belt (part a-c). The rectangular pieces are curved and fit together. Part (a) has one leather tab folded back under belt loops and one wooden tab. Part (b) has two leather tabs folded back. Part (c) has two leather tabs folded back. The fabric is fixed over a wooden centre. The front has gold couched floral motifs including prunus, lotus and peony motifs on a royal blue ground. The back lining is royal blue cotton.

Thumb PianoK4.51

Thumb piano constructed from a wooden plank base with five narrower, and seven thicker metal prongs raised up from the plank on a piece of wood and bent metal, and secured with a metal bar and wire. Each prong has a ball of resin or wax stuck underneath the end. There is a rattle composed of a metal bar with four metal cylinders attached to the edge opposite the end with the metal prongs. A skin handle is attached at the prong end through two holes in the wooden plank. A ridged geometric design, with an overall rectangular shape composed of four triangles, has been carved into the top face.
