Mai Mask3228/2

Mai mask. Carving of a face is oblong and narrow, with a pointed head, a ridge running down forehead, and a prominent nose with a curved nostril free-spanning the lower part of the face. Mask is painted in swirls, short rounded lines, and colour blocks in shades of brown and dark yellow, with white lime pigment in the eye and nose area. Short grass surrounds the jaw as a bushy beard. Shells are inset into mud as eyes and at the top of the head, from which sprout fine cassowary feathers. Plant fibre is looped through the top. Interior of mask is concave.

Mask3123/20

Wood mask. Wide incised strips have been carved diagonally over the face and in half circle patterns across the forehead. These have been filled with white lime, creating a striped pattern. From a squared chin, the face flares slightly toward the wide, rounded forehead. Down the centre of forehead is a line that meets the nose, and off of which are carved the eyebrows. Nose widens toward bottom. Eyes are thin slits cut through the wood, with large rounded eyelids above. Mouth is a protruding cube, with lime colouring the centre. Around the edge of the mask are bored five small holes, similar in size, evenly spaced. The back of mask is concave and undecorated.

Mask3123/13

Wooden mask. The carved face has large eyes partially closed below thin brows, a thin nose with a sharp bridge and wider nostrils, and protruding closed lips. Small ears protrude from the high on the sides. Three lines are embossed on the forehead and emphasized with white pigment. A band of painted red sits at the top of the forehead, as well as along the lower eyelids. The head is decorated with stripes of carved diagonal lines. On top sit two figures, arms crossed, one leg bent underneath and the other laying outstretched on the head of the mask. Definded buttocks at back.

Shield2948/9 a-b

Wooden shield. The front is decorated with carved and painted abstract patterns. The top and bottom sections of the shield are painted red with ochre pigment, and two thinner black bands border the carved panel of decoration that covers the majority of the shield. The carved decoration consists of two sections, top and bottom, featuring four sets of conjoined coiled shapes with a diamond pattern at the centre. These are painted red and are raised above the background, which is white. Running between the upper and lower sets of coiled shapes are two undulating raised shapes which are in-filled with red pigment. The central diamond is raised and painted red with a white diamond in relief surrounding it. Part b is a fragment of the shield which fits into the upper left corner, decorated with one half of a coiled line motif. A considerable fragment of the upper section of the shield is missing as are large portions of the borders around the sides of the shield.

One rectangular reddish brown clay brick with a slight intentional rectangular depression in the top surface. Brick has many chips, as well as splashes of green paint and white accretions.

Fragment: Fresco Painting2827/7

A fragment of a fresco painting, mounted in a clear plastic frame. The composition consists of a man and a woman seated beside one another. The female figure is holding the right arm of the male figure. The right side of the composition contains a small table, which is supporting a yellow and red vessel, as well as a lotus flower in a small vase. The male figure is holding the blue stem of the flower. The colours were derived from natural pigment, and the fresco is in stable condition.

Model CanoeC848 a-c

Wooden model canoe (parts a-c) with one outrigger. The canoe has an oval-like shape with pointed ends, a rounded bottom and interior. The surface is painted red and black with white on the bow and stern which have small sections of shallow engraving. Across the top of the canoe are six pieces of bamboo that extend out to the pontoon and also support twelve thinner stripes of bamboo that run in opposite direction. The pontoon or float (part b) is cylindrical in shape is black with pointed, tapered ends. Inside of the canoe is a small, carved wooden paddle (part c).

Plain dark brown-black wood shaft with lime and red rubbed into carved areas. The base of the point has three horizontal, rounded rings; a downward pointed, truncated conical shape; a wide, horizontal, grooved band; a truncated conical shape; and a cone at the tip. Along the lower end of the shaft, there are is a rectangular shape with two horizontal, rounded rings at either end. Under this shape, the shaft bulges slightly and then tapers down at the other end.

Brown-black wood piece that has a handle in the form of a crouching human figure. Body is decorated with crescent-shaped lines. Face has circular eyes, a long nose, and a wide smiling mouth with jagged teeth. Has a brow line with a knob at the top of the head. At the base of the figure, there is a circle in front and a sideways G-form on the back. Designs emphasized with lime. 'Blade' tapers to a flat rounded point and is perpendicular to the human figure.
