nipple top hand maul2025.O.005:002

1) relatively complete nipple top hand maul. The belonging is missing a portion of the distal flared base (approximately 25% of the base). Shallow scratches and abrasions are present along the handle surface. The handle is slightly polished. Most of the handle has a roughened texture and slight porosity which suggests surface weathering. The distal surface is flat. There is significant damage to the distal flared base, where approximately 25% of the base was broken off. The uniform nature of the rock and patina around this break, along with the polished nature of the abrasion surface, suggests that this damage may have been incurred from improper use of the tool during the belonging's life. The flared nipple base also has a weathered chip, which does not appear to be recent damage. The distal base has a stain of oil/residue likely from adhesive. The handle has one speckle of white paint present.
