Tree of Life Sculpture3452/2

Miniature 'tree of life' sculpture made from clay in the shape of a tree with a thick trunk. The design appears to depict Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Covered with various large flowers in light yellow, red and black, small round fruit, and large dark green leaves extending out around the exterior, all attached to thin wires that are sunk into the tree. Amongst the foliage are two small naked figures with their genitals covered by fig leaves, a female and a male, with a large grey serpent wrapped around the trunk in between. Above, a winged figure in a pink and red tunic, and two light yellow birds on either side. There is one large candle holder extending straight up from the trunk of the tree with its rim painted red.

Tree of Life Sculpture3452/1

Miniature 'tree of life' sculpture made from clay in the shape of a densely branched tree with a thick trunk. Densely covered with red, blue and dark blue clay flowers and green leaves attached to thin wires that are sunk into the tree. Amongst the foliage are placed a myriad of decorations, including trompo spinning tops, butterflies, birds, sunflowers, a sun, a blue and white lidded jar, and a mermaid with a pink tail holding a stringed instrument at centre. Behind the mermaid is a purple arch with flowers across it, and extending out from it. There are four candle holders - two on each side, one pink and one blue.

Hand Puppet3352/1 a-c

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Boizinho' or bull character. The body is carved from wood and painted. The bull (part a) is black with white spots with two long brown horns that extend forwards. Where the legs should be, it's covered by a long multi-coloured fabric skirt. The skirt is composed of four strips of fabric, each with a different pattern - the top section is yellow with large pink flowers, then shiny gold, then red with blue flowers, and then purple shiny fabric. There are neon ribbons hanging from the horns, as well as a single strip around the top of the skirt. A long black tail of a triangle of black fabric and black hair extends down the back. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements. The puppet can be placed on a stand - stick (part b) and base (part c).

He has pink skin, almond-shaped black eyes, a large nose, a closed mouth with purple-grey lips, and adhered black and full beard. He wears gold-rimmed glasses. His fabric body / tunic is a light red and white gingham with brightly-coloured plant patterned sleeves. The fabric covered foam tubes are adhered to the hands. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

He has dark grey skin, large circular black eyes, small nose, thin moustache and closed mouth with thin dark red lips. He has painted short black hair, mostly covered by a wrapped head scarf. His fabric body / tunic is a dark green military camouflage fabric. The fabric is nailed to the hands and head. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

String Puppet3351/1 a-c

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Carlo Magno (King Charlemagne). Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He wears a burgundy and gold tunic, purple-red velvet leggings, and a dark blue with gold brocade cape with a gold fringe. He also wears a silver metal belt, silver ankle guards, and a silver crown with deep red velvet underneath four arches, and surmounted by a small brass(?) globe and copper(?) cross. The crown is decorated with set glass(?) stones. His chest is embellished with a shiny woven textile, adorned with applique, sequins and looped-fringe, topped with a silver-coloured necklace with bejeweled cross (part c). The left wrist has a length of black cord tied to it, and the right hand is clenched in a fist, with a hole for an accessory to be inserted through. A metal rod with an eye hook at each end is tied to the right wrist. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – with limbs held together by fabric underneath his outfit.

String Puppet3351/4 a-g

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Agolaccio. Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long metal rod with hook at the top. He has a thick black moustache and small goatee. He wears black pantaloons with vertical red bands, a white tunic and a black cape. He is heavily armoured with body armour with a detachable neck guard (part c) and a helmet. His right hand has a partial gauntlet. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips, held together by fabric underneath main outfit. The left wrist has a length of black-brown cord tied to it, which also attaches a small circular gold shield, with an eight-petaled flower design, to his forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small metal sword (parts d-f) is inserted through, which also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part g) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel.

Hand Puppet3381/20

Mechanical hand puppet of a couple (one male, one female) each holding a pestle, working in the same central mortar. The mortar and platform are carved from wood and painted red-brown. The woman has pink skin. She wears a long dress that is green with yellow, red and orange flowers, a blue jacket with red flowers and yellow hearts, and a yellow floral scarf over her long, curly black hair. The man has orange skin. He wears a long sleeved green floral shirt, and blue pants. They both have painted black boots. Operated by two connected rods that are attached to each puppet's torso to control their arm movements.

Hand Puppet3381/18

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Caboclo de lança' (warrior with spear) character. Carved from wood and painted. He has light pink skin, small nose, small moustache and an open mouth with thin red lips. He holds a small white flower in his mouth. He wears a shiny gold outfit with a sequined and beaded poncho overtop. The front design features a blue upper half with a red, green and gold rainbow over a gold dot at centre, and a white lower half with a red cross at centre. Each sequin has a clear bead sewn at centre. The poncho is lined with tassels, alternating between red and gold-yellow. On his head, he wears a red headdress with shiny plastic garland in blue, gold and red and a light blue chin strap. Under the back of poncho, he wears a board covered in orange fabric, with two metal bells attached to each lower corner. He holds a long flag in his left hand consisting of various brightly coloured ribbons wrapped around the staff down the entire length. His boots are painted black.
