Hand Puppet3381/15 a-b

Mamulengo hand puppet (part a) of a 'Quitéria' character. Carved from wood and painted. She has light pink skin, wide medium brown eyes, and a slightly open mouth with large red lips. She wears a dress made of four different patterned fabrics with gold ribbon lining the neckline, belting the waist, and between the lower fabrics of the skirt. She has long brown hair with a flower on the right side of her head, and her face is painted with green eye shadow, long black lashes, and dark pink-red circles of blush. The fabric is adhered to the hands. Her boots are painted black, and part of her foot has broken off (part b).

Hand Puppet3381/10

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Médico' (doctor) character. Head and hands are carved from wood and painted. He has pink skin, wide black eyes, sculpted eyebrows, large triangular nose, full moustache and beard, and a closed mouth with red lips. He has painted short black hair, that is covered by a white fabric hat with a red medical cross. His fabric body / tunic is white. The fabric is adhered to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny white ribbon at the wrists and neck. Attached to his left hand is a an oversized white syringe marked with amounts on the side. The hands are carved to define the fingers. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Cachoeira de Tapagé' character. Head and hands are carved from wood and painted. He has light beige skin, wide oval black eyes, rounded eyebrows, a pointed nose, and a wide grinning mouth. He has painted black hair. His fabric body / tunic is dark red with sleeves and skirt of a green fabric with large yellow, red, and orange-pink flowers. The fabric is adhered(?) to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny brown ribbon at the wrists and neck. He holds a green liquor bottle in his left hand. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Rod Puppet3352/12

Mamulengo rod (stick) puppet of a woman and child character. Heads, hands and feet are carved from wood. The woman has black skin, large black almond-shaped eyes, red glossy lips, curly black hair made of fibre, and a green and red floral scarf on her head. She wears a long-sleeved brightly-coloured dress and blue floral pants, both with yellow cuffs. She is barefoot. The woman's left hand holds a bundle wrapped in blue floral fabric on her head. The woman is holding a baby in her right arm. The baby is pink-beige, with blue eyes, painted chin-length black hair, and is wrapped in blue floral fabric. Operated by a single rod attached to the body.

String Puppet3351/8 a-g

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Agricane (King of Mongolia). Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He has a thick black moustache and long goatee. He wears a gold tunic, gold pantaloons adorned with vertical red bands, and a blue with gold brocade cape. He is heavily armoured on his body and shoulders, with guards on wrists, ankles and neck (part c). He wears a crown with pointed leaf projections and a long black wool train; he also has a red-yellow-black wool braided headband. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – held together by fabric underneath main outfit. The left wrist has a length of black-brown cord tied to it, which also attaches a small circular gold shield, with an eight-petaled floral design, to the forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small silver and gold-coloured metal sword (parts d-f) is inserted through, which also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part g) with an eye hook on each end. Both hands are painted silver. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel.

Calungo hand puppet of a 'Capitão João Redondo' or Captain John character. Head and hands are carved from wood. He has yellow-beige natural wood for skin, and painted oval black eyes, black hair and moustache, and red lips. He has a moveable lower jaw, hinged with leather both within the head and small straps on either side, and fishing line extending out from the chin down the front of his collar. His fabric body / tunic is black and white gingham. The fabric is nailed to the hands and head. Each hand has a single hole extending through the hand for possible accessories. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Rinaldo. Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He has a small blonde moustache and goatee, and long blonde hair. He wears a shiny green tunic and a matching cape adorned with gold applique and fringe. He wears full gold-coloured body armour with a copper lion design on the chest, and a helmet with visor, adorned with a lion on top. The neck guard (part c) detaches. The left wrist has a length of grey cord tied to it, which attaches an oval gold shield, with a lion on it, to his forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small silver-coloured metal sword with a straight blade (parts d-f) is inserted through. The threaded end of blade also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part g) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – with limbs held together by fabric underneath his outfit.

Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He has a small dark brown moustache and brown hair. He wears a shiny red tunic and matching cape, adorned with gold applique and fringe. He wears full body armour with a helmet that has a visor, adorned with an eagle on top, and a train of bright red feathers. The left wrist has a length of brown cord tied to it, which also attaches a small circular gold shield, with an eagle circled by eight small flowers, to the forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small silver-coloured metal sword with a straight blade (parts c-e) is inserted through. The threaded end of blade also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part f) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – with limbs held together by fabric underneath his outfit.

Calungo hand puppet of a 'Cachorra Pechincha' (bargain dog?) character. The light brown dog is made with wood covered in fabric. It has small ears and a slightly curled tail. Black wood eyes and painted nose, and drawn red mouth. In place of legs, a tube of mixed animal prints (stripes, spots) fabric in black, brown and white extends down, which is where the hand is inserted.

Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) that is mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. She wears a pink tunic, off-white brocade pantaloons, and a pink velvet cape with a silver fringe. She wears full armour with separate arm, wrist, shin guards, and a detachable neck (part c) guard. The helmet has a visor and is decorated with light pink feathers. The left wrist has a length of black-brown cord tied to it, which attaches a small circular gold shield to the forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small silver-coloured metal sword with a straight blade (parts d-f) is inserted through. The threaded end of the blade also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part g) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel.
