Standing wood figure, (ibeji) with headdress, on circular base. Nude female stands upright with arms connected to waist. Flat stomach below pointed breasts. Has pronounced belly button, buttocks and genitalia. Above genitalia diagonal lines are carved. Triangle carved in high relief on back, beneath neck. Eyes have thick lashes and a nail in their centre. Three vertical lines carved underneath each eye. Four horizontal lines carved next to open mouth. Ears flat against head. Tall cone-shaped headdress circled with horizontal lines and split into four sections with vertical bands. Circular pedestal has an alternating triangle pattern carved along sides. Hole drilled into back of pedestal.

Purse3343/11

Handmade beige leather purse with lizard scale pattern on front and back. Purse is rectangular, has an adjustable shoulder strap, and a rounded flap with a front loop closure. Sides and bottom have lines and X’s embossed along them. Edges of purse are stitched together with plain leather. Interior has a small zippered pocket, along the back.

Hand Puppet3350/1 a-b

Punch puppet. Hand puppet of the Punch character (part a) and his slapstick (part b), from a Punch and Judy puppet set. Head, hands and legs carved from wood. Head and hands painted beige. Character has protruding chin and long, hooked nose. Nose, cheeks and chin are rosy. Lips are red and eyes light blue. Small red dots in the corners of the eyes. Character is wearing blue eye shadow and has large black eyebrows. Dark brown lines on face to highlight nostrils, mouth, chin, furrowed brow, ears and wrinkles around eyes. Punch has white fuzzy hair, glued to his head, and is wearing a red, yellow and gold jester’s hat. Character is wearing a red tunic with a large, yellow ruffled collar and a frilled hemline. Collar has a line of dark red trim. Cuffs have a line of wavy yellow trim. Bottom edge of tunic has two rows of wavy gold trim. Two lines down front of tunic, with an oval in between them. Lines and oval made up of yellow and orange fringe decoration. Stuffed, oval-like shapes attached to the back and belly of Punch. Shapes are same colour as tunic. Tunic connects to a black fabric body for the puppet. Hanging in front of the black fabric are two wooden legs. Legs are painted bright yellow. Has short-heeled, red shoes with yellow and red ruffles on them. Metal ring along bottom edge of body opening. Operated by inserting hand inside the black fabric body to control the head and hands. The slap stick is made of two and a half grey-brown, thin slats of wood.

Pendant3395/3

Pendant composed of a square metal plate with three attached ornaments beneath, and a loop at both top corners. Plate has a band of filigree around the edge. Within the inner square, is an X-design with circular brown-red jewel inset at centre, and small flowers at the end of each arm. Three charms are attached to the bottom edge. At centre, a large oval brown-red jewel with a circular stained glass floral piece beneath. On either side, attached at each corner, is a smaller circular stained glass floral piece, with a coin attached beneath. One appears to be a 5 Para - Mehmed V coin and the other a 1 Kurus - Mehmed V coin both struck in 1327.

Headband3395/1

Necklace composed of a length of ribbon with metal ornaments sewn across the ribbon's centre with lavender and light pink thread. The ribbon is off-white with a wide band of yellow down the centre, and two smaller bands of alternating red and light blue squares on either side. Across the ribbon, there are two triangular beads on either end, with a flat rounded rectangular piece at centre, and five rounded rectangular beads in between on each side. From these, chains of beads hang. The majority of the beads are circular, teardrop or triangular. There are three large crescent-shaped ornaments with filigree within, each with a palm-shaped amulet or Khamsa attached beneath, and small filigree ornaments attached to both.

Belt3363/3

Beaded belt with flap and long beaded neck strap. The belt is composed of two long rectangular strips of hide overlaid with red wool trade cloth that attach to a wide rectangular section of hide at centre. The two strips attach at the back with two mismatched metal buttons. The front section has a flap with red wool facing out, and interior lined with a burgundy with brown floral fabric. All edges finished with blue binding and edged with white beads. The strap is composed of two long pieces of red wool back with beige fabric attached at the neck. The strap has four matching beaded designs in light blue, light brown-yellow and black. The belt flap has three similar sun-like designs in a row in black, white, light pink, light blue, dark blue, and yellow-green. Two more mirrored beaded designs are on each hip in light blue, navy blue, light pink, violet and dark green.

Figure3368/1 a-b

Power figure (nkisi nkondi). Standing male figure (part a) with left arm down at side with hand positioned to hold something, his right arm raised with fingers curled to grasp a spear (part b). The figure has inset glass eyes with painted white pupils. The face is carved with an open mouth with bowed lips, a triangular nose, and large ears. The hair is striped black and orange-brown, and wrapped at the hairline with a plaited fabric band. The body is covered with rusted nails and small triangular metal blades. Strips of fabric are wound throughout the nails, with some bone fragments included. Attached to the chest and abdomen, one above the other, are two rectangular glass-front boxes containing plant fibres and other materials. The glass is covered by grey clay with inset small red beads, leaving a small circular area through which to view its contents, and is wrapped in twine. The figure stands on a rounded rectangular wood base with a large piece missing. The wooden spear has a cylindrical shaft and triangular tip, all carved from a single piece of wood.

Dzunuk'wa Mask3370/1

Large Dzunuk'wa mask painted black and red. Mask has a protruding forehead, sunken temples and cheeks, recessed narrow eyes, hooked nose, and large pursed lips. Mask has long hair parted at the middle, long bushy eyebrows, a long moustache and goatee, all made from horse hair nailed to the mask. Back/inside is plain carved wood.

Kohl Container3357/6

Small kohl container composed of two round containers with pointed ends, attached at their long edge. Each container has a flat flower-shaped stopper with a small hole at centre. The opposite end tapers to a capped point. Between the two tubes is a small flattened loop with a chain attached; on the other end of the chain is a dabber, capped similarily to the containers, with a square shaft etched with zigzags that transition to a smooth cylindrical end. The container is decorated with dots and thin strips of twisted metal.

Dagger3363/1

Y-shaped iron dagger with a thin wrapped handle. Dagger has a long tapered blade, which changes angles towards the tip, coming to a point. The back of the blade is flat. The narrow handle is wrapped with a thin strip of leather, and splits at the hilt creating the overall Y-shape.
