Miniature Hammer3557/6

Sago hammer sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Hammer consists of a bamboo head with a wood handle, lashed together with rattan fibre. Top of wood handle is split in half and bamboo head is inserted into it. A twisted rattan cord is wrapped around the tip of the head and base of the handle, giving hammer a triangular shape. Orange card inserted into bag, behind hammer, with image of person using it; paragraph of text describe materials, and how the hammer is made.

Miniature Gong3557/9

Slit gong with beater sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Gong has a cylindrical body with protruding triangular handles on either side; three triangular cutouts along top edge of handles. All sides of gong, close to top edge, are decorated with a zigzag; design is burned(?) into surface. Wide "I"-shaped slit runs through top centre of gong; two circular and vertical line designs burned(?) on either side of slit. Long cylindrical beater extends from middle of slit at an angle; beater is undecorated and adhered to gong. Yellow card is inserted into bag, behind gong and beater, with scene of person playing the gong; paragraph of text describes making of gong, and meaning of decorative marks.

Miniature Pipe3557/11

Pipe sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Pipe is cylindrical with a tapered mouth piece; mouth piece coloured black. Three incised decorative bands along length of pipe; all incisions are coloured in black. Top and bottom band consists of repeating thin triangles, with curved sides; horizontal lines in between triangles. Centre band has alternating triangle pattern; negative space forms a wavy line. Bottom opening of pipe is coloured black; interior is undecorated. Green card inserted into bag, behind pipe, with image of person using one and one of a pipe itself; paragraph of text describes maker, place made, and material.

Shell rings on a braided plant fibre cord sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Large white ring hangs from bottom of cord; channels carved through middle on front and back of ring. Smaller flat shell rings are threaded through the cord on either side of large ring. Yellow card inserted into bag, behind shell rings, with images of shells and an individual wearing it; paragraph of text describes rings and their purpose.

Face Cover3553/1 a-b

Rectangular fabric face covering, with coins and beadwork across surface (part a). Covering has a plain red centre and is bordered by alternating white cotton braids and silver beads; triangular charms stitched along top edge of red centre. Two eye holes cut out above rectangle; fabric ridge sewn down middle of covering, imitating a nose. Ridge has coins attached along the top edge, and plastic beads and buttons along the sides. Two thin, pink embroidered bands attached to sides of covering, with strands of metal beads hanging from the bottom edges; red and green tassels throughout beads. Embroidered bands have columns of orange, green, and yellow diamonds along them. Additional coin and bead decorations along bottom edge of face covering. Back is lined with floral fabric and has a leather tie on the left side (lower half- part b); two fabric loops in each corner along top edge.

Mask3607/1

Pink metal mesh chinelo dancer's mask with a matted fibre beard, moustache, and eyebrows. Brows gently curve overtop oval-shaped eyes, with long lashes. Moustache curves sharply at ends, curling up around sides of face; beard has similar curve and protrudes outward from mask. Face has a large slanted mouth and rosy cheeks. Eyes, mouth and cheeks are painted on; thin nose is shaped from mesh. Mask is edged with painted fabric; yellow tie across back, for hanging purposes.

Earrings3596/8 a-b

Hoop-like leather earrings decorated with glass, seed, and plastic beads, and metal charms; earrings have different beaded patterns on front. Both earrings are rectangular with rounded tops; semi-circular protrusions along top edges, on front and back, where earrings secure. Both protrusions decorated with beaded stripes on front and back. Two semi-circular and one triangular beaded protrusion on outer edges of both earrings, with metal charms extending from them. Semi-circular protrusions have plastic buttons in their centres; protrusions on left earring (part a) are backed with leather. Metal loops on inner edges of both earrings, towards top. Earrings have three sections of decoration: semi-circle on top, main body, and small groupings of beads and a plastic button along bottom edge. Upper section of left earring is solidly decorated with a plastic button in the centre; outer edges trimmed with three plain bands. Main body is covered in horizontal rows, trimmed with stripes on all sides. Upper section of right earring (part b) has a ray-like motif, connecting to a central button. Main body consists of four rectangles with a wide decorative band across middle; all sides trimmed with multi-coloured stripes. Circular beads run down centre of main body of right earring. Backs and interior of both earrings are undecorated.

Button Blanket3558/1

Black button blanket with wide red bands along all edges, on front; small red neck tie along top edge with a snap metal closure. Inner edges of red bands are decorated with groupings of four white buttons, done in diamond formation; groups are spaced evenly throughout. Central design on blanket is a large copper, done in red felt. Copper has bear design on the top half and "T"-like design on bottom. White buttons are stitched across red felt. Top back edge of blanket is decorated with a wide red band. Two loop ties on either side, towards centre on back.
