Cantonese Opera ShoesN1.749 a-b

Pair of Cantonese opera shoes, the leather sole shaped to simulate very small shoe, with wooden "shoe-horn" attached at heel to provide actual foot support, hidden under silk upper and attached cotton cuff. Upper: scroll design, silver sequins on white ground edged with black cord all on red ground, with scattered purple sequins. The off-white cotton cuffs each have an off-white cotton rectangle at the front with a loop attached on either side near the top on part a, and two loops at the top on part b. Balance of cuff, ecru cotton. Loops may have served to hold cord to keep cuff in place around foot. Cotton insole.

Cantonese Opera Hat OrnamentN1.837 a-b

Pair of matching ornaments. Slender bamboo shaft, supporting a raccoon tail, encircled at bottom by a row of gilded cardboard petals, with silk pompoms wired to them. Below this, another circle of gilded petals, supporting a silk fringe. Colours are brown, white, turquoise, orange, pink, gold, and blue. Fringe on (a) is blue, on (b) white.

Cantonese Opera JacketN1.863

White jacket with epaulets and cotton body with metal snap fasteners. The epaulets have embroidered fu dog and other motifs in red, white, black and brown on white ground with a white fringe. The fu dog motif has stuffed, appliqué eyes, nose, teeth and tongue. The arms have dragon and coin motifs in brown and yellow. The cuffs have snap fasteners and fu dog motifs with stuffed, appliqué eyes, nose, teeth and tongue. The inside lining is white cotton.

Dark purple robe with rounded neck, tapered sleeves with hoof cuffs and a side opening with brass frog closures. There are slits in the centre front and back. The collar border has a gold peony motif on a red ground, edged with gold braid and pink trim. The cuffs have gold braid outside and black cotton lining inside. The robe lining is yellow linen.

Purple damask vest with large floral pattern. The vest has a rounded neck, side slits and an off-centre opening with brass frog closures. The opening, sides and bottom hem have pink borders with gold braid and yellow trim. The borders are stiffened with paper. The inside lining is natural-coloured linen.

Embroidered with two strips, one on each side, of medallions, extending from the border that has a main design consisting of bright purple and yellow flowers with green leaves on an orange-red background outlined by bright blue dots. The space in between the borders is filled with printed material that has a main design consisting of red, pink, and white berries and flowers with green leaves on a bright blue background. Has six metal globular buttons and button holes. Lined with bright purple fabric.

Shawl1201/33

Woman’s large embroidered shawl made from greenish black cotton textile, embellished with horizontal rows of red and off-white (or pale yellow) finely embroidered geometric designs worked in silk floss. Rectangular in shape and worn over the head with the wide dimension encircling the wearer; the top two corners are turned back and tacked down to the body of the shawl, where there are large clusters of red broken threads on each side where large ornaments may have once been attached. There is a dense row of bright red, white and blue glass beads and red silk tassels that extends from the edge of one turn-back to the other, at about 32 centimetres from the top of the shawl. The piece has a densely embroidered border and the sides and bottom are edged with a narrow brass(?) chain. The textile is pieced in places.
