Bridegroom's Belt2503/1 b

A belt (part b) in the shape of a rounded rectangle of stiff brown leather lined on one side with green silk damask and with the outer surface of blue silk. Attached to the outer surface of the belt, there are circular and rectangular plaques of red-brown bamboo set in white metal. Two metal loops encircle the belt vertically at the front and the back with two iron studs between them on the outer surface.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.673 b

An inverted pyramidal-shaped hat that has bird, flower, and butterfly motifs, appliqued in pink, yellow, mauve, green, and grey on a white background edged with white fur all on a black background. Stiffened, and glued. Decorated with circular tin reflectors, and mirrors. There are two plain ties at opposite corners.

Tassel Ornament2644/1

Ornament made of elaborately knotted blue-green silk cord, with three large tassels attached at the end opposite the loop formed by the cord at the upper end of the ornament. Below the loop is elaborate knot with six loops protruding from the sides, below which is a silver ornament strung on the cord, with a coral bead at each end. Below the silver ornament is another elaborate knot, below which are suspended the three tassels, each wrapped at the top with fine silk thread of the same colour as the tassel. The silver ornament is urn-shaped, with a loop at each side from which hang silver butterflies each with two red and two blue enamel dots. There is a raised Chinese character on each side of the urn, on each side of which are panels inlaid with yellow, blue, and brown enamel. Above the urn are floral shapes formed of silver inlaid with coral beads.

Purple damask silk hanging with embroidery and tassels. The rectangular hanging has an upper flap that is folded over onto the main panel. The flap has narcissus (flower of the new year), peony (flower of spring), crane (symbol of longevity), Shou Shin (god of longevity), (god of happiness), (god of prosperity), and deer (symbol of longevity) motifs. Around the edges of the flap is a cream border with floral motifs and purple trim. The main panel has peony, phoenix (symbol of peace and serenity), unicorn or chi lin, tiger and dragon motifs. Around the edges is a turquoise border with floral motifs and dark blue trim. Along the bottom are multicoloured netting with bronze discs and tassels. The back is lined with pink cotton.

Open-top HatEd1.298

Cap of black satin decorated overall with gold stamps. The cap is made of two halves joined at a centre seam from front to back, except for the opening at the top, round when worn. This opening and the forehead area are edged with narrow piping. The edge of the cap is straight across the forehead, but then is cut at a right angle so that it covers the ears. The lower edge forms a circle from the right angle to the top opening. Above the edge of the circle and forehead area are gold stamps shaped like flowers. The outer fabric is folded under at the ears and threaded on a cord. A small area of bright blue satin shows in the lining behind the ears and inside the top opening, but the rest is lined with black and grey cotton fabric. At the back of the top opening is a copper ornament shaped like an inverted heart cast in a lotus design, from which are suspended three tassels, one dark pink, one yellow, and one pink. An identical copper ornament is sewn to the front. Below it is a complex knot design in pink cord, and three tassels, two dark yellow and one dark pink.

Open-top HoodEd1.291

Open-top hood made of dark red silk damask with added ear-flaps of blue silk damask edged and lined with white rabbit fur and filled with grey cotton batting. The red damask is patterned with three roundels, each with two dragons surrounding a Chinese character. The blue damask is patterned with bat ? shapes and a Buddhist swastika. The hood is constructed of two halves sewn together at the centre of the forehead and centre back, but with an opening at the top edged with black piping ending with a short slit at the back. The hood is cut straight across the forehead with two deep scallops edged with black piping on each side. It is edged entirely with two layers of skin with black fur, one facing inside and the other facing outside. A flat red silk cord woven with green and gold geometric designs crosses the opening from front to back, ending at the back in an elaborate knot made of pink and dark blue cord, below which are five red tassels wrapped in gold thread. At the front there an elaborate double knot of gold, pink, and yellow cord, below which are seven red tassels wrapped in gold thread. The hood is lined with bright green felt, and has fragments of paper attached to it with long white running stitches.

Open-top hood made of purple floral-patterned silk damask with added ear-flaps of fuschia silk damask lined with white rabbit fur, with a loop at the end of one and embossed brass button at the end of the other. The hood is cut straight across the forehead with two deep scallops edged with black piping on each side. It is edged entirely with two layers of skin with black fur, one facing inside and the other facing outside.. A string of coral-coloured beads crosses the opening from front to back, ending in a broken jade disk at the back, below which are seven pink tassels wrapped in silver thread. At the front there an elaborate knot of gold cord, below which is a teardrop shaped piece of jade, below which are nine pink tassels wrapped in silver thread. The hood is lined with dull green cotton flannel.

Shaman's HatEd1.282

Stiff hat with round brim and straight-sided crown narrowing to a flat top. Hat is solid blue nylon fabric inside and red wool slightly ribbed fabric outside. It has bands of rainbow striped fabric around the edge or brim, base of crown, top of crown, and up each side. The bands are outlined with woven undulating gold ribbon. Metallic sequins in floral and leaf shapes in green, silver, and gold are adhered to the surface. Long string attached underneath on both sides, on which are strung red, green, and white plastic beads. Small red cardboard cylinder on one side of base of crown.

Open-backed blouse with machine embroidered green bodice and pearlescent red and pink patterned breast piece. Three-quarter length sleeves are trimmed with a shiny silver ribbon and a thick band of coarser cross-hatched white and red fabric. The back has two sets of red ties at the neck and across the back. The inside of the blouse is lined with brown, beige, black and white patterned fabric.

Brown silk cloth with 14 embroidered areas. Numbered end shows two mirror image gold embroidered dragons over waves motifs with bands of blue, green, red, and brown. Green bats, blue clouds and flaming circle around dragon. Next area of embroidery towards center of cloth shows four mirror image cocks over same wave pattern, with green bat. Same motif is repeated off-center to these. Next area of embroidery is towards the opposite end, showing two squares with gold embroidered dragon surrounded by blue clouds, flaming circle, red and green bats, flowers, shell, and fish, over a red flower and wave pattern. Above each of these squares are two small wave motifs. At other edge are two cock, wave and bat motifs mirrored. At opposite end of cloth is one cock, wave and bat motif in one corner. Along edge are two Chinese characters.
