Cantonese Opera HatN1.796

The folded hat is light brown and rectangular with a rounded top piece curling down on either side. The hat has a light brown centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are two pink peonies with green leaves and gold swirls and a pink and red bat. On the inside of both side folds is a red peony with green leaves and gold swirls. The rounded top piece has pink and red peonies with green leaves and gold swirls. The curled ends have a small purple flower and an attached maroon tassel. The designs on the back of the hat mimic those on the front. There are pink and red peonies, green leaves, gold swirls and small purple flowers. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.784

The folded hat is blue and rectangular, decorated with appliqué and metal-mirrored discs. The front of the hat has a flap and the right side folds inwards twice. On the outer side of the hat is a large white circle with a bird in the centre. Surrounding the circle are tuffs of white rabbit fur. Around the circle are motifs in silver thread. The bottom corners of the hat are rounded. Three sides are bordered by a silver and pink border. The designs on the back of the hat are the same as the front. Inside the hat folds are motifs in silver thread with pink and green details on an orange background. Along the bottom is a blue border with brass discs, edged with purple with traces of gold. Covering the entire surface of the hat are metal discs with mirrored centres. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.780

An off-white square hat with the front, and the back angled to meet each other like a roof, and having the top edge curved. The front has bat, and peacock motifs with a white tile, 4.8 x 3.6 cm. The back has a longevity design with dragon, and butterfly motifs. Colours include yellow, blue, gold, and green. Decorated with circular mirror inserts edged with brass-coloured metal. There are two very long green fabris streamers at the back with an arrow-shaped-like pattern at the bottom consisting of a green print on a white background edged with pink, circular mirror inserts edged with brass-coloured metal, a pink floral print on a white background edged with a blue geometric pattern, and semi-rounded brass-coloured pieces. There are two off-white ties at the back.

On the inside of both side folds is a red peony with green leaves and gold swirls. The rounded top piece has pink and orange peonies with green leaves and gold swirls. One curled end has a small orange flower and an attached green tassel. The other curled end has a small red flower and an attached pink tassel. The designs on the back of the hat mimic those on the front. There are pink orange and red peonies, green leaves, gold swirls. However, the small flowers on the curled ends are blue. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Rectangular piece of red cotton mirror cloth with embroidery in cream, black, yellow, peach, red and purple. Cloth is covered in geometric embroidered designs; a large central square flanked on either side by two smaller squares, all surrounded by a large rectangular border. Many circular pieces of mirror have been incorporated into the design.

Silk square, with a yellow centre and purple border. Centre embroidered with sixteen red, green and white peacocks and mirror-centred flowers it is bordered by mirror-centred flowers and leaves. The pattern is edged with a row of multi-coloured undulating ovoids and chevrons, embroidered with untwisted silk(?); backed with white-yellow cotton and bound with red cotton. Hanging loops present on the two lower corners.

Dark pink brimless cap with circular crown and straight vertical rim cut with an arch-like shape at the front. The cap is solidly embroidered in dark pink with a yellow, orange, blue and green diamond pattern on white material. The crown has two narrow black lines. Sequins are visible through holes in the embroidery, and the edge is finished with a narrow black line.

Flat, two pocket pouch faced with black hand-woven cotton decorated in embroidery and mirror work. Green, yellow, purple, brown and pink cotton thread. Mirror pieces (9 of 1 cm. diameter, 4 of 2 cm.) sewn with buttonhole stitches. Metallic thread holds largest piece. Zippered closing. Double fabric backing and inside sleeve of black mill cloth. Tubular black braided cord arm strap attached to side seams as decorative binding.
