Neck Ornament2960/27

Neck ornament made of 18-19 strings of cylindrical beads creating a wide, circular necklace that fits close to the neck. The beads are threaded on fibre strands, held together by seven strips of hide interspersed at regular intervals, with thin hide ties at the ends. The beads are decorated with incised lines, and lacquered(?).

Toy, called an ajajaq, made out of what may be petrified wood? The object has a long, thin, rounded neck sitting upon a wider mid-area with a single, thick 'shoulder.' The mid-area narrows toward a flaring base. Many small holes have been bored through each of the object’s surfaces at regular intervals. A long, thin piece of sinew is tied through two of the holes in the centre back of the object and hangs loosely.

Pear shaped wooden opium scales with long dowel-like neck and spherical end. A loosely braided fibre ring fits around the neck. Object is cut in half widthwise and, pivoting on a bolt fixed through the end of the neck, slides open. Revealed in its inner cavities are a shallow, circular metal dish, a small oval piece of flint(?) and a long, cylindrical bone stick all tied with brown and black string. The bone stick is covered in black dots arranged in a linear pattern and has a small thin piece of blue string tied at one end.

Scanning the Ice for Seals2858/1

Small sculpture of hooded hunter's head and jagged rocks. Finely carved white stone face is inside a black stone hood with etched lines showing fur around face. The hood ends in a pointed tip at top and off to one side at the bottom edge. The carved head is situated over a marbled white stone base with rough, pointed edges on three sides; flat on bottom. Artist inscription etched into base.
