The Elizabeth Cole Butler Collection.
Plain strips of cloth (six) sewn together and painted with a pattern of seven birds and a central human-like figure, in dark brown on a beige background. There are three birds at each side, and one underneath the figure. The cloth has selvedges and raw ends.
Square, rattle-bottomed basket with a round upper rim. Basket with open weave as follows: base is plaited (double layer); sides - the warp is double and is left bare, a slat is placed in between the warp strands, a row of plain twined weaving follows. The result is an "openwork weave" which is not open. Four of the weft strands are dyed and in sets of three double warp strands are dyed brown. Result is sort of a plaid design. Rattle inside double base.
A cylindrical basket of plain twined weaving with crossed warp open-work twined weaving. Main design consists of two three-row horizontal bands of black.
Rectangular mat with woven pattern. There are six bands through the weft strands. Each band has two strips of dark bark on a downward diagonal and a centre strip of dark natural bark on an upwards diagonal. Together the strips form a zigzag design. The border around the edges of the mat is formed by a double line of dark strips through the warp, crossing at the corners. The edges are finished by overcasting on a core of cedar bark. The mat is sewn together in the middle on the weft axis.
Long narrow mat with painted designs. There are two centered paintings in green and red within two thick black circles. One painting is of a killer whale, the other is of a thunderbird. There is a pair of dark cedar strands running around the outside border. The edge is finished using a wider strip of cedar as the outermost strand and overcasting on a core of cedar. There is a wooden dowel attached across one end.
Large rectangular mat with woven pattern. The strands are plaited diagonally to the axis of the mat. There are groups of dark cedar strands running at regular intervals through both the warp and weft, creating a geometric diamond pattern. The edges were originally hemmed by replaiting strands back into the body of the mat.
Plaited woven mat with border of checkered brown and black coloured cedar bark. Edges are over turned and secured with twinning stitches.
Square mat - very fine weave. Geometric design of intersecting bands formed by groups of dark strands running at regular intervals through both warp and weft. Edge finished by folding back ends to make a short hem and binding them down with an extra stitch.
