Yurlungurr (The Great Snake)3544/1

Painting on a long, thin and rectangular piece of slightly warped bark; depicts Yurlungurr (the Great Snake). Painting background is maroon with sections of black and dark yellow; maroon is covered in white dots. Main design consists of two large, curled serpents in centre of painting. Snakes have thick bodies that taper at white, oval-shaped heads and pointed tails. Short, white forked tongues extend from mouths; both have maroon circular eyes. Bodies are decorated with diagonal bands filled with cross-hatching; bands are maroon, white and dark yellow. Snake bodies are outlined in maroon with white dots throughout. Neck of top snake is dark yellow, bottom snake has a black neck. The space surrounding the top snake is black, space around bottom snake is dark yellow. Throughout painting background there are large semi-circles, fan palms, and animals. All background decorations are done in maroon, black, white and dark yellow; cross-hatching and dot motifs throughout. Back of painting is undecorated; paper label is adhered to centre.

War canoe dance - Canoe Paddlers mask3546/2

Painting on paper depicting war canoe dance. Two figures stand in foreground, facing one another, and holding upright paddles. Large canoe in middle of painting with a flying bird motif along side. Canoe is being paddled by five people; sixth figure, wearing a feathered headdress, stands at the bow with a spear. Directly behind the canoe is a large masked figure. All figures are wearing a variety of neck rings, wristbands, headbands, belts, and button garments. Formline design motifs throughout scene and figures; done in black, green, blue, red, gold, and brown. Title and artist signature written in pen along bottom edge of painting. Additional numbers written in corners on front and back.

Large photograph of a southern magnolia flower on a folding chair, in a damaged room. Large sections of ceiling have fallen out; tiled floor is cracked and peeling with pieces missing. Walls of room have large cracks and white stains around them. Dark blue chalkboard-like panel along back wall of room; strips of board are peeling off along the right side. Black speaker attached to wall above panel and a dial controller below; closed half-glass door to left of panel. Large window on side wall of room has a white and green boat crashed through the frame. Nets and ropes scattered on floor underneath window. Additional debris swept into back corner of room; chair is in the foreground.

Large photograph of mizuaoi flowers in a Jōmon pottery vase, on a black background. Flowers are purple, and have thick stems and large green leaves; vase is brown with a light yellow lip that flares outward. Portions of lip that are visible have a scalloped edge; lip is mostly covered by overhanging blossoms and leaves. Body of vase has horizontal channels carved around sides, forming columns. Raised swirls and incised circles throughout columns; negative space filled with imprinted dots.

Bark Painting3532/10

Painting on a rectangular piece of slightly warped bark; depicts a spirit figure. The background is painted orange-red, figure is beige and wearing a wide-brimmed hat and full-body suit. Face of figure is rectangular, and has black eyes and a wide frowning mouth. Arms are held up and knees are bent, with feet turned toward one another; figures spans entire bark piece. Both hat and suit have an alternating stripe pattern, done in red, white and dark yellow; stripes are made up of cross-hatching. Cuffs, neckline and centre of full-body suit have beige bands with red dots throughout. Identically patterned beige bands extend from elbows and connect to knees; two striped bands extend from bottom edge of hat and connect to feet. Rectangle protrudes from bottom of figure's body and has two beige points along the bottom edge; rectangle decorated with the alternating stripe pattern. Painting on a rectangular piece of slightly warped bark; likely depicts the entity Wintjili. The background consists of black and brown-red stripes, of varying widths; blocks of dark yellow throughout stripe pattern. Outer edge of painting is trimmed with white bands filled with black diagonal lines, dark red vertical lines, and black and dark red dots. Figure spans entire bark piece, arms are held up and knees are bent; hands and feet are beige, face is decorated with black and maroon bands, made up of cross-hatching. Head is oval-shaped; white circular eyes frame a large, beige triangular nose, maroon dots across nose. Figure is wearing a full-body suit with an alternating stripe and chevron pattern, done in maroon and dark yellow; patterns are made up of cross-hatching. Dark yellow band runs down centre of suit, alternating sections of black and white dots throughout. Edges of suit are trimmed with white and maroon dots. Semi-circular shapes protrude from either side of chest, underneath bent arms; done in orange and decorated with white striped bands. Additional white bands decorate background, filled with black and maroon dots. Back of painting is undecorated; inscriptions written across surface. Large, rectangular storyboard painting on ironwood. Bordered on all sides with a band of alternating black and yellow triangles. Depicts a yellow, white and maroon boat, operated by three people, sailing on a dark blue sea, away from a black coastline. Two large buildings on centre of land, with tall pointed roofs. Buildings are yellow, brown, white and red; roofs are black and white. Gables are yellow and have animal, human and geometric motifs incised across them in rows. Palm trees around buildings. In foreground, on the water, is a maroon canoe filled with fourteen people; twelve are holding paddles upright, one is at the rudder, one is on a central platform, blowing a horn(?). Large black and white bird flying in the top left corner, with a fish caught in its beak. Scene done in mix of high and low relief carving. Background is naturally coloured. Unsigned. Hand-pulled linocut print depicting a female dancer standing in the sea, with mountains and a cloudy sky in the background. Dancer is wearing a shawl, shirt and knee-length skirt; hair is down and she is barefoot. Head is tilted and right hand is raised to her ear; left hand is held out to the side. Wide curved lines extend from around her hands, touching the edges of the print. A lightning serpent is depicted below her in the sea; shown in profile. Along the bottom edge of the print the edition number, title and artist signature are written in pencil.

We Dance Them Back In3520/1

Woodblock layered print depicting a female dancer wearing a headdress of a female lightning serpent; dancer is also being led by the supernatural being. Figure is wearing a shawl with circular motifs, short pants and tall boots. Large white circle behind dancer's face; filled with curved rows of dots and trimmed with plain bands and dots. In bottom right corner of print, there is a row of dancing women; heads are tilted down, left hands are raised and right are at sides with their palms down. All are wearing shawls, shirts and knee-length skirts. Wavy bands stretch across print; bands are either plain or filled with circular motifs. Small lightning serpents throughout background; circles with star-like shapes in their centres throughout background. Print has a yellow background with designs overtop done in black and white. Along the bottom edge of the print is the edition number, title and artist signature are written in pencil.
