FROM LOGBOOK: 1 PIPE STEM.This was originally 2 pipes, but one was later found to be E2596 (which is from the U.S. Northwest Coast), and the other remains as ET11734. The logbook says "Madagascar" but this is crossed off and "US NW Coast" is written in. Not clear if the NWC designation refers to both pipes or just E2596. It was found in the Madagascar storage area originally, but there is no other evidence that it is from Madgascar.
Shell Sample. Original field bag lists, "Shell Sample No. 37/Swanson." No additional field documentation has been located for this sample. (David Hunt, 05/24/2011)
One bag 6 pieces of wood. C-14 Sample #10. Field Catalog Form describes provenience as: "Unit 3S1-4, Level bag." The description reads: "Dung, 1 2-st. S cordage, 9 pieces bone, 4 wood, 1 reed." 45KT20/349.1 and 45KT20/349.2 are associated entries. 04/28/2011 I. Ostericher.
Basketry fragment; partially unravelled. Found with objects from 45KT20. No conclusive description found in Artifact record. Pictured in Swanson 1962, Figure 31; descripton reads, "Fragments of soft twined bags of Apocynum, from the upper remains, Shelter 8B." Described in Swanson page 58, B. Shelter 8B: The Upper Remains #9:" Twelve pieces of soft twined bags, each possibly representing a different bag. Figure 31. See also Appendix D. Warp and Weft of Apocynum; all have weft pitched up to the left...All specimens are weft face...The continuity of weft elements is obtained by laying the end of the terminating cord element under the end of the new one without knotting, twisting, or splicing." Artifact is not listed in the Field Catalog form. It has been assigned cat. #45KT20/1966-95/11 by the Burke. Z. Garcia Morales, 03/08/2011.
One cordage fragment, plant fiber. Field Catalog Form describes provenience as: "Unit 3S1-4, Level bag." The description reads: "Dung, 1 2-st. S cordage, 9 pieces bone, 4 wood, 1 reed." Only one cordage fragment has been found. T. Gaudio, 4/12/2010
Black glass box with four sides and a clear glass base, open at top. The upper edge undulates from side to side. The outside surface is plain black, the inside surface of the four sides is etched with a distributive Northwest Coast design. A black and white photograph sits on the clear glass base, which is lit from below while installed/on display. The photograph shows a group of girls standing in front of the side of a building, with their teacher.
