San Simon Figure2738/193 a-g

Figure of Maximon/San Simon seated on a chair and festooned with offerings. The painted wood body is dressed in a green fabric army uniform and red scarf and is bound to a wooden chair with straw seat with a multi-coloured belt that ties a metal sword around his waist. The head with metal hat (part b) is on a metal post that sticks into the neck and is removable. Other offerings include a metal necklace (c), two paper money bills (parts d, g), a colourful clay incense burner (e), and a glass bottle of liquid (part f).

Soul Mates Paddle3004/1

Long, heavy steering paddle. Painted design on one side and deeply carved design on the other side. Painted side features stylized designs in grey and white. The paddle is long, with a wide notched handle at the top. The neck narrows before the blade. At the bottom of the blade, the paddle narrows to a point. The carved side of the paddle features three faces, two of which are anthropomorphic with narrow eyes, a wide nose and narrow mouth. The face at the bottom is larger than the one above. The small face on the handle looks bird-like, possibly an owl? Signed and dated near handle.

Paddle2992/1

Wooden paddle carved from a single piece of wood (including handle). Leaf-shaped blade, with a long throat flaring toward the shoulder, then tapering to a point. The shaft flares slightly toward the small grip. The shaft and throat are painted blue, the point of the blade is painted dark orange-red and there is a slightly V-shaped stripe of white between them.

Cantonese Opera Gong2967/55

Small brass gong is roughly rounded, flat on front with edges curved around to back to form a bowl shape. Edges are rough. Surface undulates slightly with a swirling pattern in the metal at centre. Colour is mottled gold and brown. Red and black Chinese characters are visible on the back.

Small brass gong is roughly rounded, flat on front with edges curved around to back to form a bowl shape. Edges are rough. Surface is mottled gold, brown and black with spots of green corrosion on the front. Red Chinese characters are visible on the back. Surface undulates slightly.

Cantonese Opera Makeup Box2967/51 a-e

Small sliver plated make-up box. Top has a fold up mirror, and connects when closed to the front with a decorative latch. Box holds two long thin drawers, the top of which (part b) comes out, and the bottom is stuck in place. Each has two leaf-shaped hanging handles on the front. Hanging bar handles protrude from the sides (one handle is missing, the other, part c, is loose). The sides and front of drawers are finely engraved with scenes of flowers, foliage and birds. The lid shows a scene of a man and woman embracing among trees and birds, surrounded by low trellises. Part d is a small brush with a thin silver handle and long stiff bristles. Part e is a varnished wooden comb with fine teeth and painted flowers and branches on its front.

Pair of calf-high boots covered with sequins in blue, copper and gold. The boots have thick white soles curved upwards at the front. The foot is demarcated from the calf with white piping, and there are vertical lines of piping at the front and at back. The centre panel has a sequined geometric design with translucent cylindrical beads. There are white cotton ties on the top of the boots, at back.

Cantonese Opera Boots2967/34 a-b

Pair of grey calf-high boots with orange dragon motifs. The boots have thick white soles curved upwards at the front. The foot is demarcated from the calf with brown piping, and there are vertical lines of piping at the front and at back. Cloud-like motifs of brown, light brown, and yellow are embroidered on the foot, with a flaming purple and red sphere over the toes. A brown and orange dragon dominates the majority of the calf section of the boot. The dragon's pupils are pink thread and the mouth is dark orange. Above the dragon's head is another purple and red sphere. There are white cotton ties on the top of the boots, at back.

The foot is demarcated from the calf with brown piping, and there are vertical lines of piping at the front and at back. The embroidery on the foot is a blue design, incorporating a figure with two white eyes with black pupils. Blue flower petals with blue vines are visible on the calf section of the boot. There are white cotton ties on the top of the boots, at back.
