Rod PuppetIb397 a-c

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Discoloured white face positioned downwards with straight pointed nose, pink lips and white teeth. Hair, slight moustache, eyes outlined in black. Red crown (mahkota) headdress with tiered diadem (jamang) in gold, red, and green. Gold kurawista surrounds grey field; small grey triangular extension above. Gold sumping, two badong, and green Garuda Mungkur (short tongued) with wide black Tali Garuda. Long black hair falls in three curls. Gold neck and torso; arms have gold and red ornaments at biceps and wrists. Hands held flat and bent back at wrist. Red chest covering and apron with brown wavy trim, sequins and beads. Apron has red waistband and yellow fringe at bottom (both discoloured). Long batik skirt in beige with blue and red.

Rod PuppetIb396 a-c

Black hair, moustache, beard and facial details. Large red crown (mahkota) with gold, green, white, and orange components, notably a green Garuda Mungkur with black tail, an extensive badong with two points and a single hair curl (kendit) with gold stripe. Black neck; upper torso gold. No arm ornaments; hands held flat and bent up at wrist. Red chest covering with yellow trim and sequin pattern: red apron with green waistband, brown trim and sequin decoration, yellow fringe at bottom. Long batik skirt in blue, red and beige.

Red-brown jug with trumpet mouth, single handle and black designs. The jug is made with fine-grained clay with a large quantity of white limestone particles, a few dark grits and a small amount of fine silver mica. The body is round with a flat bottom. The neck is long and narrow with a handle ridge midway. The trumpet mouth has a wide and splayed rim. The vertical handle is attached to ridge and rounded shoulder. The paint is black, thin, matte paint. The black designs feature five bands on neck, five narrow bands around centre and a swastika on the shoulder. There is also paint on the shoulder and lip.

Carved wooden female figure in a squatting position mounted on a circular base. Hands are touching across the abdomen immediately above protruding navel. Small pointed breasts and stylized vagina. Top of head carved to represent tuft of hair. Protruding lips with sixteen carved teeth. Traces of white paint in eye sockets and mouth. Deep vertical crack runs down back of figure; wedge-shaped crack in base.

A fan of woven straw in twill weave, shaped like an inverted heart, with a tubular bamboo handle that has a split 10.8 cm. long to allow for the insertion of the fan. The handle is painted (?) with a mottled brown pattern, perforated near the butt end and held in place with a nail. The straw is purple, blue-green, and natural colours, woven in geometric design, finished with a band of braided straw sewn with unspun linen (?) thread around each side.

Ceramic pot on 3 short (0.7cm.) legs, badly broken into 6 pieces, with additional piece, lid and tip of spout missing. Repaired with dark yellow glue. Squat spherical shape with spout affixed to one side and 2 triangular lugs, one above and behind spout and the other opposite. Pot has white body, and white lightly crackled glaze, painted underglaze with light blue/green around spout and lugs; dark blue on each side in pattern of y shapes enclosed by 2 vertical lines enclosing 3 x's. Same design incised on body. Rough blue line around top and bottom of pot, also incised. Glaze inside.

Ceramic pot on 3 short (0.6cm.) legs, broken into 8 pieces, with other pieces and lid missing. Repaired with dark yellow glue. Squat spherical shape, wider at bottom, with tapered spout at one side and two triangular lugs (one broken), one above and behind spout, the other opposite. White crackled glaze, roughly painted underglaze with light blue/green around lugs and spout and with dark blue on each side in pattern of 2 x's enclosing y. V-shaped areas of pattern filled in with yellow/brown and parallel incised lines. Rough blue line round top and bottom of pot, each over 2 parallel incised lines. Glazed inside.

Ceramic jar with thick very light brown body, broken at neck. Neck has corkscrew groove on inside. Jar is round in horizontal cross-section with nearly spherical body on raised single foot, with narrower neck. Heavy grey/white glaze, crackled, painted underglaze with 5 irregular blue bands, the centre band is much wider (2cm.) with a strip of yellow in the middle and irregular short incised or impressed vertical and diagonal lines. Inside is unglazed.

Bark cloth cover decorated with twelve repeat rectangular designs in groups of three. Each rectangle contains nine triangular shapes divided into three rows. The edge is folded over towards the front and sewn in place to form a border.
