Mask3581/1

Baining bark cloth face mask. The hat has a sturdy formed brim, which expands into a conical crown, painted with repeating patterns of triangles on a continuous line that alternate in black and orange-red. A pointed wooden tip is inserted into the point of the hat. The conical crown is formed with a circular piece of wood, which has straight sticks attached to it, that extend up and meet at the tip. The interior of the crown is lined with large leaves. The face mask is attached to the hat where the brim meets the crown, and has a sturdy formed jaw line. The mask is painted with a skeletal face design showing sunken cheeks and forehead, open mouth with pointed teeth and large outlined black oval-shaped eyes. There is a hole through the centre of the forehead.

Bentwood box (part a) with separate lid (part b). Softly curved walls of box are attached to square base with pegs and adhesive; sides of base are painted black. Bird motifs painted in red across front and back of box, made up of formline design elements; other formline motifs painted on left and right sides. Sides of thick lid are painted black, rest is undecorated; lid has a short inset lip. Artist signature and date made written and incised on base of box.

Painted drum (part a) made of stiffened skin stretched over round wood frame. Skin wraps around frame edges to the back; thin strips of sinew looped through holes in skin draw material tight. Sinew strips lashed together in centre with leather thongs; black looped cord attached to leather, for hanging purposes. Face of drum has bird, fin and sun motifs painted across surface, made up of formline design elements; done in dark blue, gold, and dark red. Artist signature and date made painted along side of drum; done in red. Drum rests inside separate square wood frame (part b) with tall walls (Metal hooks and wire in interior and on back of frame, for hanging purposes).

Northwest Coast style imagery painted on a doubled piece of large, rectangular burlap. The image background and facial details are in red, with a vertical dark blue border along the edge of each side. There are four main faces, with round copper buttons for eyes. The bottom section has one of the larger faces, with a dark blue canoe in profile above the centre; then two smaller faces side-by-side in the middle, with two rectangles above, each with two small faces detailed inside; then another larger face at the top, with three dark blue copper shapes above it. The unpainted areas of the faces are natural light brown jute. There are two small white plastic buttons sewn on near the lower left corner. The piece is made of two pieces of burlap folded over at the top and sewn together, using the same jute fibre, along the sides, with the bottom left open. The back is unpainted, with a large Royal Coffee stamped logo in the lower half.

Square ceramic tile with a tin glazed front and a small marketplace scene overtop; done in dark blue. Design consists of two male figures, facing one another. Both have wide-brimmed hats, tall boots, and loose shirts. The figure on the right has a front opening jacket; figure on left has a belted waist and is holding a large basket. Shadows of figures extend to right side of tile. Sides and back are undecorated.

Model Totem Pole3552/2

Model totem pole depicting a bear, a figure holding a copper, and a thunderbird on top; nailed to a square base with a rounded top. The thunderbird has separately carved and attached wings spread out at its sides. The bear is in an upright seated position; front paws are resting on top of the human figure, whose body is covered by the copper. Pole is painted dark brown-red with black, red, dark green, and dark blue-grey highlights throughout. Formline design elements painted on the copper and across the bear and thunderbird. Inscriptions carved along back of pole and on base.

Scales Box3559/13 a-b

Thin, irregularly-shaped black wooden box (part a) for metal scales (part b); hinged lid slides open from left side. Lid has elephant motif carved in relief across entire surface. Design consists of a large elephant walking towards a split tree trunk. Main body of box is undecorated. The metal scales rest inside the box; walls carved to fit scales. Scales consist of a metal beam and two circular pans, attached on either end with three pieces of thread each; beam has shears and pointer protruding from the top centre edge. Looped cord threaded through top of shears. Ends of beam have triangular cutouts along the edges, giving them a tiered diamond-like shape; similar cutouts towards base of pointer. Shears and pans are undecorated.
