Musical Instrument3577/10

Begena stringed instrument. Square-shaped resonator, covered with stretched rawhide, which is nailed in place. Triangular wood frame extends from top of sound chamber, made up of two arms inserted through the skin and connected at the top by a crossbar. The crossbar is rectangular on either end, with notches that the arms are inserted into, and a cylindrical centre where the strings are attached. The strings are fastened across the front of the sound box to wood pegs. U-shaped leather pieces placed between each string and the bridge.

Model Totem Pole3562/1 a-c

Model pole attached to a wooden base, with wings near the top made of separate pieces of wood (parts b-c) inserted into slots. At the bottom, above the base, is a thunderbird mask-like face, with a hooked nose; above that is a bear holding a copper with a face painted on it; at the top is an eagle with the wings spreading straight out to the sides. Painted in black, red, green and orange; the unpainted sections appear to have a clear stain over them, including the back. The base is made from a different type of wood and has 4 nails hammered up through the base into the pole. Inscription on back on right wing: "W. Mack Bella Coola B.C.

Copper Plaque3558/4

Copper covered plaque, with painted designs on front. Large piece of copper sheeting is wrapped around a board in the shape of a Northwest Coast copper. The front is divided into four sections, with various creatures painted in each; red and black paint used for background and highlights. Copper sheet held in place by upholstry tacks and tape on back; the board is unpainted.

Painted drum (part a) made of stiffened skin stretched over round wood frame. Skin wraps around frame edges to the back; thin strips of sinew looped through holes in skin draw material tight. Sinew strips lashed together in centre with leather thongs; black looped cord attached to leather, for hanging purposes. Face of drum has bird, fin and sun motifs painted across surface, made up of formline design elements; done in dark blue, gold, and dark red. Artist signature and date made painted along side of drum; done in red. Drum rests inside separate square wood frame (part b) with tall walls (Metal hooks and wire in interior and on back of frame, for hanging purposes).

Scales Box3559/13 a-b

Thin, irregularly-shaped black wooden box (part a) for metal scales (part b); hinged lid slides open from left side. Lid has elephant motif carved in relief across entire surface. Design consists of a large elephant walking towards a split tree trunk. Main body of box is undecorated. The metal scales rest inside the box; walls carved to fit scales. Scales consist of a metal beam and two circular pans, attached on either end with three pieces of thread each; beam has shears and pointer protruding from the top centre edge. Looped cord threaded through top of shears. Ends of beam have triangular cutouts along the edges, giving them a tiered diamond-like shape; similar cutouts towards base of pointer. Shears and pans are undecorated.

Mouth Harp3559/29

Bamboo mouth harp with a decorative cover; cover is a hollow pink tube with purple designs engraved across surface. Design consists of bands filled with diamonds, diagonal lines and zigzags. Long piece of bright pink yarn tied around end of mouth harp, and it passes through small hole on top of tube, holding it inside; large tassel on end of yarn. Harp is an irregularly-shaped rectangle that tapers to an oval-shaped end; angled lip at tip. Thin tongue carved through centre.
