Wooden horse-like figure in a standing position. Animal is carved from multiple pieces of wood; all components painted dark green. Head and body are one piece. Legs, tail and ears are separate. Legs and tail nailed to body. Ears are inset and secured with glue. Eyes and mouth are incised, nostrils painted on. Eyes are naturally coloured, mouth and nostrils are white. Inner ears are painted pink, with black lines along the outer edges. White wavy lines painted across forehead and along sides of neck, imitating a mane. White dashes painted across body. Long white lines painted down centre of back, and across shoulders and rump. Lines form a large "I" shape across top of body. White lines painted along length of tail.

Wooden four-legged animal figure in a standing position. Animal is carved from multiple pieces of wood; all components are painted light yellow. Head and body are one piece. Legs, ears, horns and tail are separate. Legs are nailed to body. Ears, horns and tail are inset and secured with glue. Eyes, nostrils and mouth are incised. Incisions are all painted black. Bottom edges of legs are all painted black, imitating hooves. Eyes painted red with light brown lashes, horns are black. Ears, body, legs and tail decorated with groupings of dark brown dots. Dark brown rectangle painted down back of figure. “V” shapes, done in red, through centre of rectangle. Top of tail painted red, back edge done in dark brown.

Eyes painted white, whiskers and nose done in black. Inner ears are painted red, with black lines along the outer edges. Black lines painted along front bottom edges of all paws, imitating claws. Entire body decorated with black spots. Tail has a black tip.

Cradle Figure3525/1

Carving of an infant strapped into a dugout-style carved wooden cradle, with a carved head-presser over and around the infant's head. Cradle has a slanted headboard and rectangular footboard; top half of footboard attached separately. Top edge of headboard and top corners of sides have been painted dark grey; entire footboard and top corners of sides have been painted dark brown-black. Infant is wrapped in a blanket with only its face, neck and feet visible. The head-presser covers the infant's eyes. The frowning mouth is incised; upper lip and long nose done in relief. Straps and rings are carved in relief. Legs of figure are in an elevated position, resting on a slanted platform.

Puppet3471/2 a-b

Head of a female Bunraku theatre puppet (part a) with stand (part b). She has a white oval-shaped face, long white neck and elaborate black coiffure. She has a wide nose, large light grey eyes and her eyebrows are light blue. Her lips are painted dark red, teeth are black. Her hair is pulled back into three buns. Front bun is secured with cord, and the centre bun is held in place with a kushi (comb) and kogai (hair tool). Both are made of black lacquered wood with iridescent plastic decorations embedded in them. Designs are floral and coloured red, light purple, white, light pink and light blue. The bottom bun is secured with a two-pronged, gold-coloured metal hair pin. The top has a circular medallion with a floral motif. The head is attached to a wooden rod with a handgrip. Two cords, with toggles, run through the grip, and into the head, to control neck and eye movement. The grip fits into a wooden stand (part b), supporting the head at an angle.

Dance Mask3476/1

Large three-headed bark cloth dance mask. Central head extends from dome-shaped headpiece. Identical smaller heads jut out from either side of its neck. They all have large semi-circular foreheads, wide round eyes, long straight faces, and thin protruding lips. Mouths are open and have large curved circles attached underneath. Entire mask surface is painted white with stylized triangular and circular motifs done overtop in black and red. Black rectangular panels painted across backs of heads and across headpiece. Panels are filled with triangular, linear and floral motifs. Mask frame made out of bamboo rods, bent and tied together.

Pubic Cover3476/2

Mushroom-shaped, bark cloth pubic cover. Consists of a bamboo cylinder, wrapped in bark cloth and secured with plant fibre, and circular head. Cylinder extends from back of cover. Structure of head formed with an inner strip of bamboo. Front is painted white. Cylinder is visible from front, in centre, and painted red, with a matching dotted line bordering it.

Chief's Mask3481/2

Carved, three-dimensional, mask pendant. Male face has wide oval-shaped eyes, thick black brows, frowning open mouth, and a black painted beard and moustache. Area around eyes is sunken and painted blue. Nostrils and lips painted red. Rest of face decorated with design elements in blue and red. Male is wearing a red twisted ring on top of head. Leather cord nailed to back of carving. Artist inscription on back with date, title, name.

Mask3392/1 a-c

A Gara Raksha (demon) mask. The mask is comprised of a face (part a) and two detached ears (parts b-c). All three parts are painted green, red, and white. The mask's eyes are cone-shaped, and protrude dramatically away from the face. Underneath each eye is a crescent shaped hole which allows the wearer to see. The mask's nose is pointed, with a bump on the bridge and two large nostrils. Its large, red mouth is filled with teeth, and two curved tusks that extend outwards from either corner. The mask's bottom jaw is secured via string, allowing the mouth to open and close. Three cobras with flared hoods extend upwards from the top of the mask. The one in the centre is the largest, and extends from the mask's forehead. The two smaller cobras extend from each of its temples. Around both of the mask's eyes and across the bridge of the nose is a decorative pattern comprised of round, elongated shapes. The mask's ears (parts b-c) are round, concave discs with lotus flower motifs painted on. There is a small hole in the centre of each disc, and a wooden peg extends from a point on the outer rim. When attached, the ears flare outwards from the sides of the mask's face. The back of the mask is unpainted. A braided rope and piece of thin cloth are tied through small holes in the mask, in order secure it to the wearer's face.

Mask3392/2

A mask depicting the anabera kolama (drum messenger), a figure in kolam popular drama. The mask is painted yellow, with red, black, and white details. Its hairline is outlined in red, and the wood above the hairline is unpainted. The mask's red-rimmed eyes protrude slightly from its face, and are shaped like half-moons. Underneath each eye is a crescent-shaped hole which allows the wearer to see. The mask's nose is prominent, with a downward curve and large, hollow nostrils. Its red mouth is open in a large, toothy smile. Forehead creases are carved into the mask, and outlined in red. Its eyebrows are painted in black. The mask has a full moustache and long beard, which are fashioned from strands of jute. The jute is knotted to a piece of string, from which it hangs. The string is tied through small holes in each of the mask's ears in order to affix the beard and moustache to the face. Some of the jute in the beard has been twisted together in order to create thicker strands. There are two small holes above the mask's ears, and one at the top of its head, but the material used to secure the mask to the wearer's face is missing.
