Rod Puppet3347/13

Rod puppet (zhàng tóu mù ǒu), representing the character Dan (lady). Head and hands are carved from wood. Head and left hand are painted pink beige. Character has a wide nose, moveable eyes and large ears. The mouth is painted dark red, eyebrows are painted black and have sharp spikes in the middle. Eyes are black-rimmed and area around ears and back of head is painted black, imitating hair. She has black hair in a long braid, secured with a pink tie. The character is wearing a light brown-yellow plaid robe. It has a small opening at the neck, secured with a tie, and two small side slits. The robe is secured at the wrists with wire and secured at the neck with a metal button. Her right hand has a large hole through its centre, the left hand has a small one. Puppet is operated by three bamboo rods- one large rod attached to her head, and two more attached to each hand. Back of puppet’s head has been cut out.

Rod Puppet3347/8

Rod puppet (zhàng tóu mù ǒu), representing the character Xiao Sheng (young male). Head, hands and torso are carved from wood. Components painted beige. Character has a small nose, large ears and moveable eyes. His mouth is painted dark red and his cheeks are rosy. Eyes are black-rimmed, eyebrows are painted black and have spikes in the middle. Area around ears and back of head are painted black, imitating hair. He is wearing a dark grey-brown cap, nailed into place. Long, black strands of hair are attached to the top of the cap. The character is wearing a green robe, with extended sleeves that drape down. The robe has a left side opening, secured with metal buttons and ties, and a small right side slit. Opening is bordered with a wide white band. Cuffs have red ribbon trim with gold and green floral motifs embroidered on them. Robe decorated with curvilinear motifs along the arms and a large linear design on the front centre. All motifs done in silver, pink, purple, blue and red sequins. Character is wearing a plaid undergarment beneath the robe. Puppet is operated by three bamboo rods- one large rod attached to his torso, and two more are attached to each hand. Eyes are operated by a wooden rod, with a metal attachment, inside of the central bamboo rod. The back of the puppet’s head has been cut out and re-attached.

Horse Girdle3440/1

Horse-shaped dance girdle. Depicts front half of a horse, with both legs bent in front of the body. Horse is made of wood and painted black, with white spots throughout. Deeply incised lines, painted white, across its body, highlighting the muscles and facial structure. White vertical lines painted down the centre of the horse’s back, trimmed on either side with horizontal lines. Matching vertical lines painted above the brown hooves. Horse has brown eyes, carved in relief. Surrounding area painted white and red. Brows are pronounced. Horse has white eyelashes and an oval-shaped spot between its eyes. White diagonal lines painted down the bridge of the nose. Nostrils done in brown, lips are dark red, and open mouth is painted off-white. Brown curly mane runs down the back of the horse’s neck, with a long strand, carved in relief, on its forehead. Short ears, on either side of strand, have a red interior and white trim. Body is hollow and has two rectangular cut-outs on either side of the back opening.

Mask3449/1 a-h

Maha Kola Sanni Yakka healing mask (part a) with removable side panels (parts b-c), figure (part d), earpieces (parts e-f), and fangs (parts g-h). Mask depicts a large figure wearing a headdress made of snakes, a silver-coloured shirt, and knee-length skirt with curvilinear and geometric motifs across it. The earpieces (parts e-f) protrude from either side of the head, below the headdress. They have a central flower design, with two snakes wrapped around the outer edge. The figure has a human in between its fang-like teeth, and a human tucked under each arm. Its hands are bent in front of its body, and the female figure (part d) lies across them. Blood is dripping from its teeth, down its chest, and onto its protruding belly. The figure is standing on top of a large smiling head, painted black. The face has bulging eyes, a large nose with prominent nostrils, and two fangs (parts g and h). It is wearing a headdress composed of human figures. Extending up from the face, and surrounding the large figure, is a blue wooden frame. Attached to either side of the frame are the panels (parts b and c). Painted blue, they are each composed of two columns of four multi-coloured heads, with barred teeth. At the top of each set of columns is a pink head, with large ears, wearing a triangular headdress. At the bottom of each set of columns is a large yellow flower. The panels have snakes along the outer edges. The heads rest at the top, and the tails curves around the bottom. Hand puppet of a mouse groom. Hands and feet are made of cast resin, head has an internal wooden cone, covered in cast resin. All components are painted. Head and hands are light brown. Black lines painted across face and neck, imitating fur. He has black eyes and black bushy eyebrows. Nostrils are red, and have white whiskers below. His mouth is a long red line, with two long front teeth. Oval-like ears on either side of his head. Groom is wearing a dark grey, two-piece suit, with a white collared shirt, dark red bow tie and black shoes. Jacket is secured with two buttons along the front centre, and has a chest pocket and two flap pockets. Pants are plain. Puppet is operated by inserting a hand inside the body to control its head and movements.

Hand puppet of a mouse bride. Hands and feet are made of cast resin, head has an internal wooden cone, covered in cast resin. All components are painted. Head and hands are light brown. Dark brown lines painted across face and neck, imitating fur. She has black eyes, red nostrils, a red smiling mouth, and two large front teeth. Her short ears are triangular. She has black hair, carved in relief across her head, that extends into long strands of string hair at the base of her neck. Puppet is wearing a layered, lace-like veil with floral embroidery along the bottom edge. Veil is secured around her ears and forehead with a beaded headpiece. Red and pink flowers across top of headpiece. She is wearing a white dress, with two long slits up the sides. Top of dress is covered in floral embroidery, with silver-coloured highlights, and skirt is plain. Cuffs and bottom edge of dress are trimmed with bands of scalloped, lace-like material. She has a wide, pink belt around her waist, tied at the back. Underneath her wedding dress, she is wearing silk-like pants and dark purple shoes, that curve upward at the toe. Bouquet of red, pink and purple flowers in her right hand. Puppet is operated by inserting a hand inside the body to control its head and movements.

Mate Container3482/1

Small, cup-shaped wooden mate container. It has a spherical body, thin stem and two-tiered, circular base. Two deeply incised lines, painted black, run across centre of body. Surface of top tier is rounded, bottom tier has a flat surface. Top edges of bottom tier flare outward sharply, before tapering inward at bottom. Small hole drilled in underside of base, in centre.

Carved wooden face mask with a horned headdress carved at the top. The face has a pronounced brow and lips, and wide straight nose. Eyes are half lidded and oval-shaped. Cut-outs underneath lids. Face is painted dark red with white semi-circles outlined in black, below eyes. Angular ears protruding from either side of face, with raised cube motifs carved along inner edges. Cubes painted black. Black line painted between face and headdress, which has a raised curved edge. Headdress area painted dark brown, with two carved horns, curving inward. Holes drilled into either side of mask with wire attached for hanging.

Doll3429/1

Male and female doll attached to a wooden stand. Dolls are made of stuffed white cloth and have painted facial features. Both have black and grey eyes, with white highlights, and thick eyelashes. The female doll has additional pink highlights in her eyes. Both have rosy cheeks and dark brown eyebrows. His eyebrows are thick, hers are curved. Their lips are full and coloured light pink. He has closely cropped hair, with a middle part. Her hair is pulled into a low braid, that hangs down her back, and is secured with a long red tie. The male doll is wearing a light pink jacket, with a matching outer neck facing and a cream inner neck facing. The jacket is tied shut with a large pink ribbon. Overtop he is wearing an open, dark purple vest, with beads along the left side of the opening. He is wearing loose pants, that match his jacket, and black shoes. All of his clothing components are covered in floral embroidery. Done in light pink and dark purple. On his back, the male doll is wearing a bell-shaped, carrying basket for wood. It has braided, plant fibre straps attached to a wooden frame, that rests against his back. The basket, tied to the frame with wire, is woven from white twist ties. His right arm is bent at the elbow and extending outward, palm facing inward. His left arm is wrapped around the shoulders of the female doll. She is wearing a short yellow jacket, with a dark purple outer neck facing and a light pink inner neck facing. The sleeves of her jacket are covered in horizontal bands. Stripes done in white, lavender, pink, teal, red and yellow. The jacket is tied shut with a dark purple ribbon. Underneath, she is wearing a dark purple dress with a wrap skirt. Around her waist, she is wearing a white, gauze-like apron, for holding flowers. Her right arm is holding the bottom corner of the apron, lifting it away from her body. Her left arm is bent at the elbow, with her hand in front of her chest, palm facing inward. Both dolls have their heads turned toward one another, their bodies facing forward. Wooden stand is painted black and has paper labels attached to the base.

Female doll attached to a wooden stand. Doll is made of stuffed white cloth and has painted facial features. Her eyes are black, with white highlights, and she has thick eyelashes. Light blue eyeshadow painted on her lids, cheeks are rosy. Lips are full and coloured light pink. Her short black hair is parted to the left, with a light brown flower pinning the hair in place. She is wearing a short white jacket, with a light green outer neck facing and matching wrist bands. It also has a light pink inner neck facing. The jacket is tied shut with a long, dark green ribbon. Underneath, she is wearing a white dress, trimmed with a wide, light green band along the bottom edge. All clothing components are covered in floral embroidery. Done in white, light green and dark green. She has rough, open weave pants and an underskirt on beneath her dress, and plain white shoes. Her right arm is bent at her side, with her hand curved out in front of her body, palm facing down. Her left arm and wrist are slightly bent, palm facing down, and resting at her side. Wooden stand is painted black and has paper labels attached to the base.
