Mask2669/10

Mask of Chwibari (the prodigal) character. Round and red with gold dotted face. Face has protruding green and gold eyebrows, white eyes outlined in black dots with circular cut-outs, large bulbous nose and cheek bones, and a curved red mouth. Strand of hair-like fibre curls down from the top of the head. Green cloth covering and ties are attached to the back of the mask and hang down. Mask backing is yellow and has a white label with printed red characters to one side.

Paper offering consisting of a stack of nearly square pieces of off-white paper, each with a square of metal foil at the centre and one corner painted pink. Half of the bundled papers have a band of yellow paint that has been painted over the metallic square and extends out to one of the edges, and one pink corner. Bound with pink synthetic twine.

Rectangular orange-brown box (part a) and fitted lid (part b) made of thick, heavy cardboard covered with paper. One side of box folds open with large tabs; lid has long sides that entirely cover the sides of the box. Embossed rectangular paper label atop the lid features a large character in the centre surrounded by text in English: "Handmade Papers of the World/The 80th Anniversary of the Foundation/Takeo Co., Ltd./MCMLXXIX/Printed in Japan."

Dark purple robe with wide extended sleeves, side slits and side opening with ties. On the front and back is a square rank panel with lotus and wave motifs in silver on turquoise ground. The collar, sleeve, side and hem borders have fish, wave and peony motifs in silver, orange, pink on blue ground. There are tin reflectors and white fur on the front and back. The belt carriers have prunus and bird motifs in turquoise and blue on a mauve ground stiffened with paper, wood and adhesive. The inside lining is yellow linen.

There are mirrors, green glass eyes and tin reflectors on the front and back. Belt carriers are silver chrysanthemums on light green ground stiffened with paper and glue. Cantonese Opera VestN1.633 a

Long turquoise vest. The vest has a centre opening with frog closures and embroidered ties. The collar border has prunus and butterfly motifs on an orange ground, with blue trim. On the front and back are crane, chrysanthemum, wave and pearl motifs on a turquoise ground. The border around the edges has a prunus motif on a turquoise ground with blue trim. The front hem is white cotton, rounded upwards and covered with small orange tassels. The tassels are formed around cores of rolled cardboard. There are tin reflectors, green glass eyes and white fur on the front and back. The inside lining is natural-coloured linen.
