Round paper fan that inserts into a small semi-circular-shaped wooden piece. Wooden piece extends into a long and narrow stick-like handle and is attached to a long cream coloured fibre cord and white tassel. On one side, the background of the fan green. Image is of a monkey dressed in red holding a bean-shaped object near a green and yellow fish. On the other side of the fan, there is a large red and black coloured threshold with two lanterns on either side.

Flat fan made of finely-split bamboo flaring out from its attachment point to a long wooden handle painted black. Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached, which is straight and at right angles to handle. Fan is covered with lacquered paper on both sides, patterned with a design of four triangles radiating from centre. The top triangle is red, the one where the handle attaches is yellow, and the two at the sides are green. The area where the triangles meet is covered with a black circle enclosing an even cross. In each of the quadrants thus formed is a line going in from the edge of the circle parallel to one arm of the cross, then bending at a right angle and curving to follow the outline of the circle. The area surrounding the handle on one side is covered with a grey paper cut, and the area immediately surrounding the handle is painted orange. The fan inserted into a split in the handle, which is shaped like a pointed oval where it covers the fan, which is attached with two rivets.

Bamboo strips are bent downwards near the perimeter of fan, those on each side bending away from centre strip. Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached, which is straight and at right angles to handle. Fan is covered with pieces of floral-patterned silk, cut to form a design of three swirls converging at the centre, coloured purple, orange, and pale green on one side, and grey, very pale green, and pale orange on the other. It has a narrow edging of grey paper. The fan is inserted into a split in the handle, which is flat and lozenge-shaped where it covers the fan, which is attached with two rivets.

Gold-coloured satin jacket, or blouse. The centre opening has front panels that overlap to the right when tied closed with two long wide ribbon ties. The left outer facing is rounded at the lower edge, while the right is straight and projects beyond the front edge. The neck is finished with a narrow facing or collar of white cloth-covered paper. The long sleeves are set in with a straight seam and a convex curve on the lower edge, narrowing to the wrist. Thin white inner ties are sewn to the right inner facing and the left underarm seam. The inner lining is loosely woven off-white rayon.

Woman’s jacket of white cotton fabric. The jacket is shorter than waist-length and opens at the front, with the left side lapping over the right when closed. Panels are added to the front edge at each side to extend the overlap. The deep V neckline is edged on the outside and inside with facings of cotton fabric, with a rounded corner at the bottom on the left, and a square corner on the right. Along the V neck is sewn a narrow collar or outer facing made of the same fabric as the lining. Two long thick ties are attached to the lower left facing and to the right of the facing. Thin white inner ties are sewn to the inner right inner facing and the left underarm seam. There is a centre back seam. The long sleeves are set in with a straight seam and a convex curve on the lower edge, narrowing to the wrist. The inner lining is white and shiny with a zigzag pattern. Jacket made to be worn over a skirt (2535/4).

Short white jacket with striped sleeves. The jacket is made of shiny white fabric with a woven pattern of small flowers and stems in white and silver. The centre opening has front panels that overlap to the right when tied closed with two long striped ribbon ties. The front edges are extended with panels from the mid-point of the outer facing made of the same rainbow-striped fabric. The garment has a deep V neckline edged with an appliqué rainbow-striped facing. The left outer facing is rounded at the lower edge, while the right is straight and projects beyond the front edge of the garment. The neck is finished with a narrow outer facing or collar of white paper covered with sheer fabric. The long sleeves are deeply set in with a straight seam and a convex curve on the lower edge, narrowing to the wrist. They are made of brocade woven in six different colours stripes parallel to the body of the garment and embellished with flower, bat and butterfly motifs and stylized Chinese characters woven in red. Thin white inner ties are sewn to the inner right inner facing and the left underarm seam. The inner lining is white nylon mesh, with an interfacing of coarser nylon mesh.

Long, flared coat with long sleeves and front opening overlapping to the right, made of white cotton fabric. The coat has a V neck with outer and inner facings of the same material and with a rounded corner at the lower edge on the left side, and a squared corner at the right side. There is a narrower outer facing or collar of white cotton squared at the lower ends and hand-sewn in place. One wide ribbon tie is attached at the mid-point of the place where the wider facing meets the front edge and another is attached at the corresponding level on the right side. There are shorter, narrower ribbon ties on the inside, attached to the facing and on the left underarm seam. The sleeves are inset with straight seams and have slight convex curves at their lower edges. The coat has a centre back seam, a pair of flared gussets under each arm and a slightly flared panel descending from the mid-point of each outer facing so that the coat overlaps at the front when closed. There are small openings in the side seams at waist level on each side. The inside facings are not stitched in place. Coat made to be worn with pants and jacket (2535/1, 3).

Hat2503/6

A black brimless hat, light brown on the inside, with an oval opening for the head. Made of fabric pasted over heavy paper, lacquered black which has then been cut and folded to form the hat which is held together by lacing with a heavy twisted cord at the back. The two cuts form diagonal lines at each side, ending in two points at the upper front. There is a fold parallel to the wearer’s shoulders across the top of the hat, from which a straight-sided flap forms the outside of the back. This is attached to the ends of the wrapped front panel at the centre back with lacing. A narrow edging of paper is pasted along the lower edge of the hat. Small tassels of twisted yellow silk cord at the back. There is lacing of grey-white paper cord.
