On each side of figures is a stylized lotus with blue leaves, on a yellow background. Border of white with pink and blue broken ribbons along top and bottom of paper. Two lanterns.

Official Emergency HatEd1.283

Official emergency hat with flat round brim attached to crown shaped like truncated cone. Inside of hat is made of paper painted black, with a woven texture showing. Outside of hat is covered with fine red silk, with edges trimmed with red paper, and with vertical strips of red paper on each side of the crown, at the bottom of which are small red tubes. On the underside of the brim from the tubes and strips are attached two red silk ribbons that are tied together. Crown of hat projects slightly below its point of insertion into the brim. Brim is somewhat wavy and has black and brown stains.

Part a is a loosely woven yellow cloth, with each pair of corners tied at the sides; used to hold pairs of clam shells for kaiawase (貝合わせ), a shell matching game; the cloth has black calligraphy on the outside. There are seven pairs of cream coloured clam shells (parts b-o), with matching scenes painted on gold paper glued to the insides. The gold paper has dots and geometric patterns; each shell has a horizontal greenish band across it representing a river. The first pair (pts b-c) have red and blue flowers on the upper side. The next pair (pts d-e) have a branch with flowers and two white and black birds with red breasts on the upper half. The third (pts f-g) have brown grass and red and blue flowers in the upper half. The fourth pair (pts h-i) have red and blue flower sprays in the upper half, and the gold is rubbed off in a few places. The fifth pair (pts j-k) have a fence with blue and red flowers above. The sixth (pts l-m) have a brown log-like feature. The last pair (pts n-o) have three white flowers and one red flower in the upper section. Parts b-o have polished, natural shell exteriors.

A rattle made of four tubular seed pods (parts b-e), each about 31 cm. Long with a 2 cm. diameter, dark brown and loosely bound together with coarse plant fibre cord ( part a). The tubes have seeds inside. The end of one tube (part b) is plugged with plant fibre like the cord, the end of the next tube (part c) is plugged with white plant pulp while the end of another tube (part d) is plugged with soft brown paper (?), and the end of the last tube (part e) is plugged with paper(?) at one end and plant fibre or bark at the other.

Painting consisting of a scene painted on silk depicting a gathering of artists along a river. From right to left: river starts near top and passes under a bridge, with a man and a boy carrying a lute. The river then runs across with trees on both banks and wine cups floating along. Groups of men and boys are on both sides of the river, painting on rocks; floating wine cups; writing on scrolls; making tea on a stove which is on a table. At left is a house on stilts with two men and a boy with brushes and a scroll. There are six very worn characters and two seals at left. There is a half round of wood and a cord at each end.

Three sticks, a vertical stick and two others that cross it at angles. Blue yarn wrapped around sticks to form a hexagon. Three irregular pieces of paper have partial words in pink or black on green or white, red and blue ground. Paper attached to base of central stick with green yarn. Handle notched at either end is attached to end of central stick with purple yarn. Length of purple yarn along handle and wrapped around each notch.

Teaching LoomSf380

A teaching loom consisting of a partially woven tubular fabric with unwoven threads passing through punctured holes in a rectangle of corrugated cardboard and knotted behind. The pattern is made up of repeated white and blue lozenge pattern on a red ground with green and pink stripes. A pair of red weft yarns extend from the final woven row. A clear, plastic cylindrical shaped bar has been passed through the threads.

Humanoid face mask with a straight profile. Red horse's hair, with the ends wrapped in brown paper, are inserted into twenty-two holes drilled into the upper rim. Hollow oval eyes are surrounded by a plain tapering oval and a recessed oval. Light blue-green forehead has patches of white, wood visible through the paint, and an abstract red form line design on the forehead. Black brows protrude slightly. Blue-green band covers the temple, the orbital plane, the cheek, and the nose. Upward thrusting nostrils that are black on the underside and red on the outer side. Upper lip and chin. Three thin red-brown lines at the lower cheek on the left extend from the side edge to the mouth. One thick and one thin red-brown line on the lower cheek on the right extend from the side edge to the mouth. Open mouth with black next to the upper and lower teeth. On the reverse, there is a piece of wood that extends from the back of the mask with a strip of leather attached to the wood.
