Tapa Cloth3130/2

Small rectangular tapa cloth adhered to a board of the same size. Patterning is geometric designs in black ink on raw, uncoloured background. Centre panel is made up of diamond shapes filled with a variety of patterns. Surrounding this are triangle shapes coloured rust-orange, along with densely patterned triangles. The tapa is bordered by a repeating motif of black and rust designs on natural ground.

Tapa Cloth3032/2

Almost square tapa cloth with geometric patterns in dark and light brown on a medium brown base. Designs are organized into two repeating, vertical halves, each with 5 repeating horizontal rectangular patterns. Each of the ten rectangles are similar, with a thin strip with two horizontal bars at the left side, then 2 squares with cross designs inside, one with a black circle at the centre, followed by two thin rows of diagonal lines in light brown. There are also several thin strips of zigzag lines in light brown running through the other designs. Half of the squares with crosses have a light brown lined background, the other half have a light brown diamond pattern. A dark brown ,heavy cotton border is attached to both side edges; a wooden bar is attached across the back upper edge. Heavy black paper is attached to (but breaking off of) the lower back edge.

Rectangular tapa cloth with geometric patterns in dark and light brown on a medium brown base. Designs are organized into an 8 x 6 grid of squares, outlined in dark brown. Each of the squares contains a diagonal cross piece design, some as filled in lines and some as thin, stretched ovals (propellor-shaped). Two rows have black cross-hatching covering half of the background of every other square. Three sides have a zigzag patterned border. A wooden bar is attached across the back upper edge.

Large brown tapa cloth decorated with geometric designs in black and light brown. The linear designs create four chevron-like patterns bisected by a column of circles. These circles alternate between pairs of black and medium brown dots. The cloth is organized into five rows of two long rectangles. All four sides are bordered by a black line. Two sides have an addition border of alternating black and medium brown triangles against a light brown base. The vertical line at the cloth’s centre is framed on both sides by the same triangular pattern.

Tapa Cloth2906/1

Large rectangular tapa cloth. The base colour of the cloth is stained a medium brown, with unpainted strips of light brown on either end. The cloth is painted with a dark brown, possibly oil based, pigment in squares with repeating patterns of birds, animals, outdoors scenes with a house, tree, sun, moon and star, a Tongan shield motif, and a central panel with triangles, lines, and lettering. At each end is a light brown strip with a bird and number in each square; 18 to 21 at one end, 19 to 22 at the other end.

Headdress2777/1

Colourful headdress with a turtle on mulberry fibre, wrapped around the front of a corrugated cardboard and plastic head ring covered with white fabric and decorative elements. A long blonde hair wig and pink feathers are stitched on to a frame at the back. Around and above the nose of the turtle are bands of green and red metal beads and brown shells, from the top of which project five black fabric-covered wood sticks with white shells and ivory coloured polished coconut shell rings adhered to their lengths.
