Mask3625/2

Turtle shell and basketry face mask. The dark red clay(?) face is built on the rounded outside of a turtle shell and surrounded by a thick basketry edge with a woven loop at the top for hanging. The mask has short, curly, dark brown hair attached along the top of the forehead. The face is painted with a black pigment with horizontal stripes and rows of triangles. The narrow pointed nose, mouth, and ears are prominently built-out with clay, and detailed. The mouth is painted black with a red slit down the centre of the bottom lip. The ears are pierced with a hole at the top, outer, and bottom edges. The eyes are inlaid cowrie shells with built out eye sockets and horizontal black stripes underneath. The edge of the face is outlined with face down cowrie shells. The forehead has another row of smaller shells inside the cowrie shells. A trio of the same small shells is inlaid into each cheek in a triangle shape. The back of the mask is the inside of the bare turtle shell, stained black with holes along the edge where the basketry is attached.

Miniature Bow3557/14

Bow with three arrows sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Bow is wrapped with plant fibre and its string is made of the same material; arrows are attached to string and side of bow with plant fibre ties. Arrows have bamboo shafts, long wood tips, and pigment decorations along the tips; small feathers attached around bottoms of tips. Miniature Bowl3557/16

Carved wood bowl and stick sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Bowl is oval-shaped with tapering ends; assortment of dot, linear, and circular motifs incised around sides of bowl. Motifs are filled with dark pigment; dried sap molded to pointed edges of bowl, along interior. Stick has a flattened top and cylindrical shaft; bottom edge of top portion has rows of horizontal lines and dots, also filled in with dark pigment. Green card inserted into bag, behind carved miniatures, with images of the bowl and an individual using it; paragraph of text describes bowl, and manufacturing process.

Miniature Spear3557/13

Spear sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Spear has a long cylindrical shaft, that tapers towards the base, and a leaf-shaped point; both are made of palm wood. Point has cross guard-like protrusions at the base, and is secured to shaft with plant fibre ties. Black bands decorate length of point. Comb sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Comb has a square shaft and eight long teeth. Front of shaft has geometric designs carved in relief; back of shaft and teeth are undecorated. Design consists of black lines, trimmed with white, bordering four semi-circles surrounding a diamond; background is white, designs done in black and dark orange. Shield is oval-shaped with two holes drilled into either side, towards centre; rattan cord knotted through holes, for holding purposes. Hourglass-like shape carved across surface, with triangles protruding from either side in centre; curvilinear motif incised in middle. Pipe sealed inside a plastic bag; bag is secured shut with a paper manufacturer's label stapled over the opening. Pipe is cylindrical with a tapered mouth piece; mouth piece coloured black. Three incised decorative bands along length of pipe; all incisions are coloured in black. Top and bottom band consists of repeating thin triangles, with curved sides; horizontal lines in between triangles. Centre band has alternating triangle pattern; negative space forms a wavy line. Bottom opening of pipe is coloured black; interior is undecorated. Green card inserted into bag, behind pipe, with image of person using one and one of a pipe itself; paragraph of text describes maker, place made, and material.

Mask3600/3

Carved mask depicting a humanoid face; made from a thin piece of wood. Face has a small thin nose, in between protruding eyes; eyes are within large, raised circles. Lower half of mouth protrudes slightly; rectangular cutout for mouth directly underneath nose. Forehead is tall and triangular; scalloped lines carved in relief down length of forehead. Two lines incised across cheeks; lines and scallops are filled with red and beige pigment(?). Holes drilled into either side of mask; interior is hollowed. (Tag looped through hole next to right eye; plastic tie threaded through holes, for hanging purposes.)

Pot3523/1

Grey-brown pot with an oval-shaped body, topped with a human-like head; spout opening doubles as mouth of figure. Face has a pronounced brow, incised circular eyes, a wide nose with large nostrils, and semi-circular ears; mouth opening is flared. Two raised bands decorate head, extending from brow to back of neck, and connect with a notched band that circles the figure's neck. Four panels, consisting of four notched bands, stretch from neck towards bottom of body. Long arms. with thin fingers, extend from neck, down front centre of body; designs are raised. Large panel runs down centre of chest, consisting of three lines with two columns of raised circles. Raised nipples are on either side of front panel; genitals underneath panel. Two curved bands connect side panels on back and arms; bands are notched. The rest of vessel is undecorated.
