Dance Hat3532/7

Conical corroboree dance hat made of bark; exterior is completely wrapped in green-grey rope-like fibre. Front is decorated with a wide, vertical orange band, bordered with two white bands; small feathers throughout bands. A wooden rod is inserted through the top of the hat and has a large bundle of emu(?) feathers bound to it; feathers held in place with white strands, rod secured with white pigment along hat interior. Feathers are a mix of grey and dark brown.

Mai Mask3532/4

Mai mask consisting of a long and narrow face. Mask is made of wood and is covered in small white shells inset in dark brown-black mud. Area around eyes and nose is plain wood and coloured dark orange. Eyes are made of inset cowrie shells, highlighted with black paint. Sharp nose bridge runs through centre of face. Nose has orange nostrils with black highlights, before extending into a snake that protrudes past the chin; raised design elements on snake's face. Round shells, with swirls in their centres, inset in the centre of the forehead and below the nose, on either side. Plant fibre cord runs around bottom edge of mask, with twisted fibre strands attached, imitating a beard. Additional fuzzy fibre on top of head, imitating hair; inset cowrie shells border bottom of hair. Top half of mask back is concave; bottom half is flat. (Hanging hardware on back.)

Breast Ornament3532/2

Woven breast ornament shaped like an inverted triangle with a naturally coloured, braided cord extending from the top; rest of ornament is coloured with orange pigment. Eight boar tusks extend from either side of the ornament; first two are pointed up, rest are pointed down. Additional boar tusks are threaded through a loop in the front centre of the ornament, pointed down. Woven protrusions extend from either side of the ornament, below the fit set of tusks; protrusions are thin rectangles with rounded ends. An open oval-shaped protrusion is woven underneath the central boar tusks. Above the central boar tusks are two cowrie shells, attached horizontally; a line of vertical cowrie shells extends from below the woven oval to the bottom of the ornament. Loop attached to bottom edge; back is undecorated.

Pot3522/21

Small black clay pot with a round bottom. Lip flares out slightly before extending into a straight neck. Shoulder of pot is steep and body is bulbous. The neck and shoulder are decorated with rows of incised triangles; body is decorated with a line of ovals, made up of incised squares. The base has a circle design filled with differently angled lines; all shapes are made up of incised squares.

Figure3522/41

Standing wooden figure of a nude female wearing a neck ring. She has long incised eyes above a wide nose and small pronounced mouth; four silver-coloured teeth are embedded throughout her open mouth. A light brown band is painted across her eyes, extending from ear to ear; small semi-circular ears protrude from either side of her head. She has three large ridges across the top of her head, imitating hair. Her neck bulges outward at the centre, and the neck ring consists of rows of incised pointed ovals. Her arms curve outward, running parallel to her body, with lines incised along the bottom edge of the hands, imitating fingers. She has a flat stomach below pointed breasts; has pronounced belly button, buttock, genitalia, thighs and calves. Her feet are oval-shaped, acting as a base. Incised bands across her hips and down her stomach, consisting of horizontal lines and “X”’s. There is a large “T”-shape incised across her back with a large semi-circle extending from the top; semi-circle is divided into four triangular sections. Linear motifs are carved throughout the "T" and semi-circle.

Wooden animal face mask with a pronounced brow and smooth face. Semi-circular indents above wide slit-like eyes, imitating eye lids; lids are coloured with grey-white pigment. Deep linear impression across entire length of forehead, dividing top of mask from the rest of the face. Nail extends from centre of impression. Small bundles of dark brown plant fibre adhered along upper lip, imitating facial hair. Triangular teeth extend from bottom edge of upper lip, covered in grey-white pigment; semi-circular tongue carved in low relief on bottom of mouth. Jaw is attached to mask with plant fibre ties and nails; plant fibre residue adhered to interior surface. Top and sides of mask are flat, jaw and upper lip are rounded; interior is hollow. Mask has holes for eyes and mouth; small holes drilled along sides and top.

Wooden humanoid mask, painted black, with a narrow face that tapers at the chin. Mask has protruding circular eyes and brows carved in relief; rims of eyes are painted white. Long thin nose, with pronounced nostrils, above small protruding lips; two white teeth(?) embedded in open mouth. The cheeks and nose are coloured red-orange; pointed ovals are incised into the cheeks, incisions filled in off-white. A semi-circular ridge extends from the top edge of the forehead, with nails decorating the sides; incised lines across top of ridge and of mask, imitating hair. Top of mask is flat, sides and chin are rounded; interior is hollow. Mask has holes for eyes; holes drilled along left and right sides of mask.

Wooden humanoid mask (part a) with detachable canine style teeth (parts b-p). Face has a semi-circular brow overtop protruding circular eyes and a large nose. The eye rims are covered in white pigment; red pigment across interior of mouth. Teeth extending from upper lip (parts b-i) are mostly covered in red pigment; teeth extending from lower lip (parts j-p) are mostly undecorated. Several teeth are actual animal teeth, rest are wood. Grey-brown and black fur line all edges of mouth, imitating a moustache and beard. Braided cords nailed around the chin, imitating a beard. Bristles of plant fibre, fur and feathers are attached to the forehead ridge, imitating hair. There is an oval-shaped opening above the nose bridge; mask has holes for eyes and mouth. All sides are rounded; interior is hollow. Holes are drilled along all edges, for attachments. Looped cords on either side of mask.

Wooden humanoid mask with a narrow face. Mask has protruding circular eyes and long straight nose; eye rims are coloured with light grey pigment. The large space between the nose and mouth is smooth and slants outward, transitioning into the upper lip. Mouth is square-shaped and has three silver-coloured teeth embedded in each lip. A large semi-circular ridge extends from the top edge of the forehead, with vertical incised lines decorating the sides. Short red-brown plant fibre(?) decoration is adhered to the bottom of the ridge, nose, eyes and cheeks. Top of mask is flat, sides and chin are rounded; interior is hollow. Mask has holes for eyes and mouth; holes drilled all around back edge.

Wooden humanoid mask with a wide face that tapers at the chin. Mask has a rounded prominent brow over protruding circular eyes; eyebrows done in relief. Small nose is wide and crooked; indents along bottom edge to imitate nostrils. Frowning mouth, with full lips, is open and has six silver-coloured teeth embedded along the top edge. Small semi-circular ears extend from either side of the mask, with holes through their centres; two long rows of holes drilled through bottom and sides of chin. Lips and area surrounding eyes are coloured with red-orange pigment. Mask has holes for eyes and mouth. All sides are rounded; interior is hollow. Holes drilled along all edges.
