Humanoid face made of packed clay and pigment. Face has a large forehead, with a triangle-shaped piece of red-pink glass embedded in its centre, that tapers into a narrow face; chin is squat. Cowrie shell eyes frame a hooked nose that has a braid of plant fibre attached to its base, imitating a moustache. Mouth is open and has a protruding bottom lip. Two deep channels are moulded onto the top of the head, creating three high ridges across the surface. Both channels have strands of plant fibre in them, secured with wooden pegs; similar strand is attached to the top of the centre ridge. Plant fibre braids are nailed along the edges of the face. All plant fibre imitates hair. Back of carving and base are undecorated.

Animal Horn3522/4

Horn container filled with packed pigment and plant fibre; horn has a hole drilled through the tip. Brass ring is strung through the hole and has decorative brass attachments. Attachments include: a bracelet-like band, two coiled springs and an ankle dance rattle-like band. The bracelet-like attachment has a rounded interior and exterior; top and bottom sides are flat. The centre exterior is decorated with incised diagonal lines. The rattle-like band is folded, with the top and bottom edges pinched at two points on the exterior side; semi-circles protrude from top and bottom edges in between pinched sections. The ends of the band are curled into tight circles.

Circular thumb pot made of black clay. Pot lip flares outward; steep inner walls end in a rounded well. Exterior of pot tapers into a small foot. Two decorative bands circle the lip and base; bands consist of three rows of imprinted triangles. Base is undecorated.

Humanoid wooden mask with a narrow face that tapers at the chin. Mask has a pronounced brow and slits for eyes; white-grey pigment painted around eyes. Long thin nose above small protruding lips; linear motifs carved in relief across lower lip. Similar designs, with additional diamonds and triangles, carved in a vertical line from the forehead to the bridge of the nose. Sides of mask are flat, top and chin are rounded; interior is hollow. Mask has holes for eyes; holes drilled along sides and top of mask.

Puppet3471/2 a-b

Head of a female Bunraku theatre puppet (part a) with stand (part b). She has a white oval-shaped face, long white neck and elaborate black coiffure. She has a wide nose, large light grey eyes and her eyebrows are light blue. Her lips are painted dark red, teeth are black. Her hair is pulled back into three buns. Front bun is secured with cord, and the centre bun is held in place with a kushi (comb) and kogai (hair tool). Both are made of black lacquered wood with iridescent plastic decorations embedded in them. Designs are floral and coloured red, light purple, white, light pink and light blue. The bottom bun is secured with a two-pronged, gold-coloured metal hair pin. The top has a circular medallion with a floral motif. The head is attached to a wooden rod with a handgrip. Two cords, with toggles, run through the grip, and into the head, to control neck and eye movement. The grip fits into a wooden stand (part b), supporting the head at an angle.

Dance Mask3476/1

Large three-headed bark cloth dance mask. Central head extends from dome-shaped headpiece. Identical smaller heads jut out from either side of its neck. They all have large semi-circular foreheads, wide round eyes, long straight faces, and thin protruding lips. Mouths are open and have large curved circles attached underneath. Entire mask surface is painted white with stylized triangular and circular motifs done overtop in black and red. Black rectangular panels painted across backs of heads and across headpiece. Panels are filled with triangular, linear and floral motifs. Mask frame made out of bamboo rods, bent and tied together.

Puppet3471/1 a-c

Male Bunraku theatre puppet (part a) wearing a long heavy robe. He has a removable head (part b) and separate sword (part c). The body has an internal wooden, bamboo and paper frame, with cords and rods throughout to control arm and hand movement. There are stuffed cloth bundles around the arms, legs and stomach for added dimension. The character is wearing a long-sleeved, front-closing under-robe, coloured dark orange with elaborate white embroidery across its entire surface. Motifs consist of circular dragons with curvilinear and floral lines in between. Overtop, the puppet is wearing a short-sleeved, vest-like robe. The shoulders and lower half are pleated. Coloured dark purple with a dark grey meander pattern background. Throughout there are embroidered circular dragons divided by rows of flowers; designs in white, dark orange and dark green. Matching belt tied around waist. White wooden hands extend past the sleeves. The head (part b) consists of a beige square-like face, long beige neck and styled black hair. He has a wide nose, large light grey eyes, and wide slanted eyebrows. A pointed diagonal red line is painted across both eyes, lips are done in a matching red. He has a light blue beard and moustache. Hair is pulled into a top knot, with a paper bow secured behind. Head is attached to a wooden rod with a handgrip. Multiple cords, with toggles, run through the grip and into the head, to control eye, eyebrow, mouth and neck movement. Maker's mark stamped onto base of head and along back of handgrip. The short curved sword (part c) is sheathed. It has a black hilt with a bronze-coloured metal pommel and guard. The sheath is black with a bronze-coloured metal cap. The sheath’s grip is dark brown and has light brown flowers painted across it. Brown, grey and white striped cord tied around the blade, to attach it to the puppet’s belt.

Entre Cactus Y Nahuales3407/1

Unglazed and unpainted ceramic sculpture of a cacti garden, on a rounded mound. Back of mound is undecorated. Animals spread throughout garden, most along bottom edge. Animals include lizards, a rabbit-like creature, cat-like creature and snake. All animals are coloured beige, with dark orange highlights. Cacti type and size vary throughout garden, and are all coloured beige. Tree-like cacti have dark orange flowers along the tips of their arms. All design elements are textured, with impressed dots, incised lines and moulded ridges. Mound is coloured dark orange and has a small hole in the top centre. Large hole in the back of the mound. Artist signature on back.
