Long thin rectangular black sash with seam in centre and black fringe tassles at each end. Either end has thin embroidered multi-coloured lines and then wider multi-coloured striped applique bands. Attached to the applique is a cowrie shell and two strings of white beads with two gold beads at the ends. Green and pink tassles hang from the ends of these beaded strings. One end also has two round beads attached to the black fringe, one clear and one brown. This end also has a blue strip of fabric tied to the tassle.
Portable retablo containing three-dimensional figures representing Saint Cristobal and others. The altar is made of wood with fresco painted over top. The exterior walls of the altar are painted yellow-white or yellow with red borders. On the side walls, there are grey curlicues painted over the yellow-white background. The top of the altar is painted yellow with red stripes. Along the front edge, there is a triangular piece of wood attached to the top of the altar. It is painted yellow with red accents. Below, the front doors of the altar are painted pink with red curlicues over top. There are two pieces of ribbon threaded through two holes in each door. The ribbons are striped with red and white. The interior of the doors are painted with black flowers that have red and yellow centres. Saint Cristobal stands against the back wall inside the altar. He wears a yellow robe, red cape and holds a large green leaf in his hands. He has a halo, long black hair and a beard. A haloed child sits on his right shoulder with a blue ball in his right hand. Below, there are smaller figures of people and animals. The interior walls are painted yellow-white with red, black and yellow spots. Signed on the back in black paint. Also, the title of the work, location, date and a number are written in black ink.
Short dark blue jacket with open front. Rectangular piece of fabric is stitched on to form the collar. The cuffs of the sleeves have colourful appliques with vertical and horizontal stripes. The right arm seam is blue, and the left arm seam is red, and there is open space in the armpits. The sides of the jacket have red and blue trim. The back of the jacket has a flag(?) applique composed of white, red, and yellow vertical stripes. The bottom has three rows of three white buttons with pink stitching.
Panel from a dance cape representing Simon Bolivar. The background of the panel is a soft orange fabric; it may be velvet. The central figure, Simon Bolivar, is depicted from the upper legs and up. The bottom of his body is bordered by a half moon motif formed by gold, blue, green and red thread. In the centre of each half moon, there is a yellow dot. Bolivar wears yellow-white pants and yellow jacket with an embossed pattern. His jacket has gold epaulettes and a pink collar. He also wears a yellow, red and gold sash and belt. Bolivar holds a green scroll in his right hand. His skin is pink and he has brown hair. The background of the panel is decorated with flowers and vines made from gold, pink, red, yellow, green, orange and blue thread. There are also silver sequins and small blue beads adorning the panel. The velvet fabric is folded over the back of the panel. On the back of the panel there is a looser weave fabric. There is printed paper sandwiched in between the velvet fabric and the loose-weave fabric. There is an orange sticker and a piece of yellow on the back of the panel that have numbers written on them in pen.
Carved and painted wood figure of a man in colonial African cothing. The man wears a white pith helmet with a dark brown button on top of it. The man’s face and the rest of his skin is dark brown. In the left side of his mouth, he holds a small cigarette made of plastic. He wears a khaki uniform. The shirt has a collar, rolled-up sleeves and pockets on either side. There are four buttons down the front of his shirt. He stands with his hands in the pockets of his khaki shorts. His khaki shorts are secured with a dark brown belt and have two pockets on the back. His torso is quite long in proportion to his legs; only a small portion of his calves are visible underneath his shorts. He wears white socks which are pulled up high. He also wears light brown shoes. The man stands upon a dark brown, round base.
Figure of a black angel with a brown wooden base (part b). The figure has a black head and hands formed out of clay. The head of the figure is hair formed from many green cone-like shapes. There are small gold-coloured beads embedded in the cone-like shapes. The figure has white eyes with brown irises; its lips are red. The head is hollow to accommodate the base. The angel does not have a neck; instead, its head is attached to a knitted t-shaped dress, from which the angel’s arms are extended outwards. The dress has wool fibres intermingled with plant fibres. There are various small objects affixed to the dress. There are four bottle caps placed across the angel’s chest and arms. The bottle cap on the furthest left has a small image printed on paper embedded within it. The image depicts an angel appearing to a group of people with a European-style cathedral in the background. The image in the bottle cap to the right depicts a young shepherd holding a staff and surrounded by sheep. Right of this bottle cap, another image in a bottle cap depicts an older shepherd with a halo. The bottle cap on the furthest right has an image in it depicting an angel in a pink dress feeding birds. Below the bottle caps, on the left side of the angel’s torso, there is a small clothes pin that is painted blue. The clip holds a rectangular piece of paper with an image of a man printed on it; he is depicted from the torso up. The man has black hair and a black mustache. The man wears a blue suit jacket, blue vest and blue tie over a white dress shirt; he also has a white pocket square. Right of the image of the man is a miniature clear plastic bottle with a blue liquid inside. The bottle is tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Next to the bottle, there is a small bronze-coloured cross attached to the dress. Right of the cross, a miniature white and blue ceramic spoon is tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Below the picture of the man, there is a miniature white and blue cup tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Right of the cup, there is another bottle cap that has an image embedded within it. The image depicts Madonna holding baby Jesus. Both figures wear elaborate crowns and are surrounded by a yellow halo. Next to the bottle cap, there is a small clothes pin painted red. On the right side of the dress, there is a gold-coloured coin with an image of a domed building on one side and an image of Jesus Christ on the other. It is tied to the dress with green ribbon. Below the cup, there is a small plastic figure of a baby tied to the dress with a green ribbon. It has brown hair, black eyes and red lips. Right of the baby, there is a bottle cap with an image printed on paper embedded within it. The image depicts Jesus Christ holding a lamb. Below this bottle cap, there is a bronze-coloured flower with a stem and two leaves. Next to the flower, in the lower right corner of the dress, there is a bottle cap with an image of Jesus Christ sitting and praying embedded in it. The angel’s wings are made of two pieces of silver metal. They are knitted into the back of the dress. The base is formed by a thin cylindrical piece of wood that is held in a square wooden base.
Small portable altar containing a figure of Saint Anthony holding baby Jesus. The altar itself is a small box painted blue on the left and right sides and the floor of the altar. On the right side of the altar, the wall is affixed using two pieces of leather each with four nails in them. At the front of the altar, there is an arched opening revealing the two figures inside. Above the arch, the front wall extends into a triangular roofline. It is painted yellow with dark green, dark blue and brown detailing. On either side the doorway is flanked by flat columns that are topped by triangles. Thus the roofline has three peaks. The columns are painted yellow-white with red, pink, dark green and dark blue detailing. The interior walls of the altar are also painted yellow-white. Saint Anthony is standing upon a ceramic plinth that is painted white, blue and red. The plinth resembles a mushroom in shape. The figures of Saint Anthony and baby Jesus appear to be made out of plastic. In addition to the plinth, Saint Anthony stands upon a small piece of blue ground. He wears brown sandals and a brown robe. He has short, light brown hair and rosy cheeks. Baby Jesus is swathed in a white blanket that has a cluster of brown spots near the upper right side. Baby Jesus has black eyes, rosy cheeks and red lips. On the top side of the object, near the back, there is a metal eye hook for hanging the object. The back of the object is yellow white and has the artist’s name written on it in blue pen. There is also a number written in red pen.
Small altar containing a three dimensional depiction of a Saint (Saint Thomas?) sitting in a chair. The exterior of the box is painted light grey. The doors each have two pieces of wire attaching them to the altar. There is a metal latch attached to the left door which fits into a metal ring on the right door. On the interior of each door, there is a flower within an oval yellow border. The flower is light grey with brown detailing and a curved green stem. Above the doors, there is a piece of wood angled at both sides created open mitered corners at the top of the façade. It is painted black along the front edge, grey on top and blue on the underside and sides. The edges of the side walls of the altar are painted red where they border the opening of the altar. The opening is also bordered by an inset piece of wood that is cut into an arch. It is decorated with pieces of clay moulded into abstract shapes; they are painted black and green. There are also red and white painted circles decorating the archway. Around the arch, there is a piece of clay moulded to form a scalloped edge; it is painted black. There is a figure of a man sitting inside the altar. His chair is green. The man has brown hair and pink skin. His body is painted with a brown robe and he wears a light grey robe made of fibre over top. There is a metal hat wide-brimmed hat loose within the altar; its provenience is unknown. There is a number written in red pen and pencil on the back of the object. The bottom of the object is unpainted.
Portable altar containing three dimensional figures of Saint Isidore the Laborer and two yoked bulls. The top and side walls of the altar are painted blue. There is an arched opening in the façade of the altar. It has a yellow border. There is a sheet of glass in the opening so that the figures inside are protected. On either side of the archway, there are blue pilasters with gold capitals. There is also a dark blue archivolt lining the archway. The roof above the arch is triangular. It is painted pink with gold accents. There is a flower-shaped finial at the apex of the arch; it is pink with blue leaves. On either side of the central triangle, there are two smaller triangles completing the roofline. They have the same finials as the central triangle. The wall below the finials is painted yellow-white with pink accents. Where the left and right sides of the front of the object border the pilasters, they are painted green with red stripes. Inside the altar, the figure of Saint Isidore stands atop a cube plinth that is painted yellow-white with blue designs over top. Saint Isidore wears black boots, a green robe with gold trim and has a brown beard and long hair. He holds a red book with black text on the cover. Left of Saint Isidore, there are two small bulls painted yellow-white with black spots and red tongues. There is a gold yoke between them. The bulls stand atop a low, square plinth of unpainted wood. The artist’s name is written on the back of the object in blue pen. Also, a location is written in pencil and a number is written in red pen.
Secular portable altar containing three dimensional figures representing a hat shop. The exterior walls of the altar are painted yellow-white. On the sides and tops of the object, there are pink, purple, yellow and orange spirals painted over top the background. On the front of each of the two doors of the object, there is a painted flower. The flowers are painted red with purple and yellow accents and green leaves. Over the doors there is a triangular piece of wood attached to the top of the altar that creates a peaked roofline on the façade. It is painted yellow with orange circles decorating it. The insides of the doors have red, purple and grey flowers painted on them. There is also a yellow flower with long stamen painted in the corners on each of the doors. The interior walls of the altar are painted green with purple borders. Twenty three white wide-brimmed hats with black bands around them are hung on the walls. In the lower left corner of the image, a man in a yellow cap, purple coat and purple pants sits upon a red stool. There is a red bowl resting on the ground in front of him. Right of the man, there is a man standing upon a brick-like object. He wears a red jacket, yellow shirt and blue pants. In front of the man, there are four hats resting on the ground around him. The hats are in various stages of being formed. In the lower right corner, there is a man in a green jacket and purple pants sitting upon a red stool. In his left hand, he holds a piece of thread. In front of him, there is an orange hat stand with four hats on it. There is also a grey mortar and pestle. On the back of the object, the artist’s name, a date and a location written in red paint. Also, a year is written in black pen and a number is written in pencil.
