Dagger2948/32

Dagger carved from a cassowary leg bone with cassowary feathers and seed ornaments. One end of the bone is sharpened into a triangular point. The other end of the bone has a woven plant fibre cover from which hang seven ornaments held in place by woven thread. Each ornament is made of two hollowed red seeds and a long black hollow tube inserted between the seeds. The other ornament is made with one white and brown plastic bead instead of a red seed. Black and brown cassowary feathers are wrapped tightly with the remaining thread at the end of each ornament.

Doll2943/1 a-b

Doll in the image of an Inuit woman. The body is made of pink cotton fabric stuffed with wool. The head has been sewn on, and is white, with stitched black facial features and black wool for hair in two long braids. A red woolen hat sits atop the head. The doll wears a patterned pink skirt and a white and blue parka trimmed with a leather fringe along the bottom. The jacket is short at the sides and dips to below the knees at back and to the thighs at front. The parka is decorated with buttons, braiding and fabric fringe and has a large hood. Part b is a pair of detachable blue pants, made of cotton, with an attached set of leather and hide boots that reach the knees.

Face Cover2878/55

Rectangular, fabric face cover made from a thin, green material that has been lined with a thicker, red floral material. There are two eye holes, one of which has a red embroidered border and the other of which has a yellow and red embroidered border. Down the centre of the cover, between the eyes, a nose-like shape is embroidered that comes halfway down the cover and ends in a circular design. Within the nose-like design there is a red, blue and yellow embroidered pattern. There is a black square border that encloses the eye holes, nose-like pattern, six small mirrors which have an embroidered border, and small embroidered flowers. Outside the black border, on three of the sides, are more mirrors with embroidered borders. Beyond the mirrors, on the outer most borders, there is a wavy white-brown line of applique. There is a beaded fringe around the outer edge of the face cover, consisting of multi-coloured beads in a triangle pattern. At the top of the mask, there are two long red threads that have been tied together. There are beads on the threads where they both attach to the face cover and where thy tie together.

Shalwar Pants2878/17 b

Long red pants with overall repeating design. The design is in a Chinese style depicting trees, flowers, houses with slanted roofs, and people paddling in boats and walking near trees. The waist is created by folding over the excess material and stitching it closed, thus you are able to see the backside of the Chinese print. The waistline has been sewn in such a way that there is an opening in the centre. In this space, are several pink threads braided together with the ends loose. These threads hold the pants around the wearer’s waist. The pant cuffs have eight repeated lines of stitching.

Shalwar Tunic2878/17 a

Long sleeved, red tunic with overall repeating design. The design is in a Chinese style depicting trees, flowers, houses with slanted roofs, and people paddling in boats and walking near trees. The collar is a Chinese style collar. The tunic buttons half way down with three small, white buttons. There are cuffs at the end of both sleeves which are each held together by a single grey button. There is also a 23 cm slit on the bottom left and right sides. On the underside of one of the arms, the material is sewn so you are able to see the white edge of the material.
