Shawl Pin2959/15

Silver shawl pin (tupu) in the shape of a spoon with a gemstone in the centre. In the concave bowl of the spoon is an engraving of a two headed bird with full plumage, long tail feathers, and wings tucked in at sides. A crown sits in the space between the heads and is topped with a cross. The edge of the bowl is decorated with irregularly placed dots. Below the bowl are two decorative oval hoops, between which is an orange stone placed on the pin where it meets the bowl. The pin is long and tapers toward a point at bottom.

Hat2959/1

Brightly coloured knitted cap with beadwork and tassels. Cap was knit in a small stitch, of fine thread. The hat is conical with a pointed top that holds a tassel of green threads. Two half circle panels with scalloped edges are attached at sides to cover the ears, with white plastic button decoration. Each has several tassels attached at bottom in pink, blue and light brown, hanging from which is a knit band with tassels of pink green and yellow at the bottom. The bands are edged with white beads. The pattern on the cap is of triangles and diamonds, with interspersed encircling lines in many different colours.

Container2960/40 a-b

Small lime bottle with a small stopper carved into a head. The bottle is made of bone, hollowed on the inside. The mouth of the bottle is oblong in shape, sitting slightly off centre. The bottle widens toward the base. The body is decorated with small incised triangles that make up a repeating figurative motif. Part ‘b’ is the bottle stopper or lid, carved into the shape of a human head and neck. The forehead is long, nose and ears prominent. The eyes are lightly carved circles, and the mouth a carved line. A small tuft if hair is carved into the top of the head. A hole is bored through the neck and filled with a small red bead at back. The surface is shiny.

Baby Carrier2960/37

Baby carrier, heavily decorated with beads, shells, claws, etc. all across the front surface. The base is a flat piece of undecorated wood attached to the rounded back piece by fibre strands. The back piece is covered with woven plant fibre in shades of brown, with a large, heavily beaded flap attached at centre, showing animal and plant figures. Across the flap are attached large claws also partially beaded. Large, round, flat shells are attached to the side and top of the back piece with tassels of beads and cowrie shells at the top corners. A beaded band tops the carrier, with small metal decorations hanging from it. The interior of the carrier is covered with red fabric, and two braided fibre straps are attached to the top corners. 19-5-75 is carved into the wooden seat.

Pipe2960/30

Wooden pipe with carved face. The pipe is long with a thick round outcropping at midpoint, hollowed. Above, the wood is evenly wrapped for 7 cm with thin coiled copper wire, up to where a smooth round head is carved. The face is flat with a long nose decorated with four incised circles. Two eyes sit to either side of the nose, made of embedded small red beads. Three small holes are bored into the top and sides of the head. An incised ring has been cut in the wood near the bottom end of the pipe.

Apron2969/2

Black velvet, emabroidered apron, rectangular with two thin cotton strips for waist ties at top. On the black velvet panel are embroidered four lines of design, the first red and pink flowers with green foliage, then a stylized line of blue, pink and yellow flowers with swirling green and purple foliage, then a line of red and yellow roses with green foliage and rosebuds, and finally a blue and yellow zigzag pattern with a blue and red hanging tassel motif. Throughout the embroidery are scattered silver sequins with white glass beads. A black synthetic fringe has been sewn onto the bottom edge.

Vest2969/1

Black velvet embroidered vest. The front is covered by embroidered wildflowers in many sizes and colours including large red flowers near the bottom, and small orange, blue or pink sprays at the top, all surrounded by green foliage. Many of the flowers, leaves and vines are embellished with colourful sequins and beads. The vest front is open and has a V-neck, with two small closing snaps located beneath. The inside is lined with a black rayon-like fabric.

Miniature Lamp2930/5 a-b

Miniature carving of an oil lamp with wick (part b). The lamp’s bowl is shallow and flattened at the back. At the centre of the back of the bowl there is a row of red plastic bumps. The base has deep notches along all four sides. The wick is rounded at one end tapering down to a flat edge on the other. It is slightly curved near the middle.

Doll2961/1

Doll inside a hide carrier. The doll’s head protrudes out of the top of the carrier and wears a fur trimmed hood that ties under the chin. Each eye is a small black bead, with three red beads creating the mouth. The doll wears a rawhide top decorated with fringe on the shoulders and stitched closed down the front. Hands are crossed over the stomach. The carrier is closed tightly around the doll by thongs that crisscross across the front. Brown fur covers the sides and back of the carrier, a strip of white fur partially covers the back from top to bottom, and a rawhide fringe decorates the top back.

Gloves2964/2 a-b

Pair of soft beaded hide gloves, or gauntlets, that reach to mid forearm. On the back of the hand are three lines of beads, white and red, with the two outer lines holding three green leaves each. On the back of the wrist is a white beaded flower with dark red centre and accent. It has two vines in the same colours, also with three green leaves per vine. On the outside wrist edge of each glove is a long hide fringe. The top cuff of the glove is rounded, while the underside cuff is straight. The wrist portion of the glove is decorated front and back as well as top and bottom with scalloped edging.
