Dress3343/7 a-b

Two piece dress: top (part a) and long skirt (part b). Both parts are made of fabric with the same design. Shirt and skirt are off-white with wavy light brown lines. Overtop are grid squares, outlined in dark brown, olive green and orange patterned lines. Inside the squares are olive green and orange geometric shapes, outlined in dotted dark brown lines. Shirt has high neckline, with rounded collar and short puffed sleeves. Closed with five, cloth covered plastic buttons on front. Shirt has tapered waist and white cotton interior lining- except in the sleeves. Skirt has drawstring waist, ties at centre back. Long slit ends halfway up back of skirt. Interior unlined. All parts of dress are hemmed.

Puppet Prop3350/11 a-b

Sausage machine prop (part a) and sausage links (part b), from a Punch and Judy puppet set. Sausage machine is an open-backed wooden, rectangular box with plastic tubes on the top and front. Tube on box front is thinner than the one on top. Semi-circular sticker above tube on front reads “Sausomatic.” Word is written in rainbow colours. Yellow crank handle on left side of box. Sausage links are stuffed and made of pink fabric. Seven sausages in link. Operated by inserting sausage links into tube at front of machine, from the back, and manually feeding them through. Handle would be cranked simultaneously.

Hand Puppet3350/10

Ghost puppet. Hand puppet of a Ghost character, from a Punch and Judy puppet set. Head and hands carved from wood. Components painted white. Character resembles a skeleton. Hands have black lines painted on them to imitate bones. Black lines on face to highlight chin, cheek bones, eyebrows and teeth. Nose and eye sockets carved out. Interior of nose cavity painted black, interior of eye sockets painted grey. Googly eyes inside of eye sockets. Puppet is wearing a white, hooded robe. Metal ring along bottom edge of body opening.

Headdress3345/3

Leather headdress with fur, cowrie shell, bead and button decorations. Leather band, that would wrap around forehead, has veil of chains hanging from bottom edge. Dark yellow and dark blue tube beads along bottom of veil. Bottom left edge of headband bordered with red and dark yellow tube beads, bottom right edge bordered with dark blue and green tube beads. Headband attached to round piece of skin, covered in grey and black animal hair, by eight leather straps. Round piece of skin would sit on top of head. Leather straps at front and back of headband are wider than the ones along the sides. Roundel in centre of headpiece, overtop of animal hair. Roundel has diamond and circular patterns done in white, light blue, dark blue, red and dark yellow round beads. Long chin strap, made of two leather strips, hangs from bottom edges of left and right sides of headband portion. Chin straps are secured together with thread covered in round beads. Beads are light blue, dark blue, red, yellow and white. Beads form a striped pattern. Wide leather strip extends from back of headdress. Ends of long back strip and chin strap have off-white and black animal hair. All leather surfaces are covered in cowrie shells on the exterior. In addition, the back strip has rows of red and green oval beads, dark blue and black tube beads, and plastic buttons. Buttons are black, white, dark maroon, yellow and green.

Hand Puppet3350/9 a-b

Devil puppet. Hand puppet of the Devil character, from a Punch and Judy puppet set. Head and hands carved from wood. Components painted dark red. Character has protruding chin, hooked nose and pointed ears. Two tall, angled horns on forehead. Has black goatee. Eyes are circlular, and painted yellow with small, black pupils. Black lines on face highlight nostrils, chin, ears, furrowed brow and cheek bones. Frowning mouth is painted black. Has large slanted eyebrows. Fingers have pointed ends. Character is wearing a separate black, satin cape with a red interior (part b). Cape has high, ruffled collar. Wearing a silver-gold vest with black lines, giving it a scaled appearance. Vest only on front side of puppet and is overtop a red, velvet-like robe. Above vest, attached to robe, is a black, lace-like ascot tie. Velvet-like robe has braided trim around the bottom edge. Braid made from small gold, emerald green and dark purple plastic ribbons. Metal ring along bottom edge of body opening. Operated by inserting hand inside the body of the puppet to control the head and hands.

Small shadow puppet of background scenery. Shadow puppet made of semi-transparent animal skin and a watery paint or dye, soaked into the skin. Depicts a square container with four arms with scalloped decoration, one rising out of each corner, that connect at the centre above. There appears to be a hook at the centre. The maker's name is written across the back of a piece of skin attached behind the puppet.
