Nokoro Spirit Mask2814/6

Long, rectangular, brown mask. The sack-like mask is made of tree bark stitched along either side. The top of the mask folds over behind the head and has a dark brown fringe made of bark strips which cascades down the back like hair. Two eyeholes are made at the bottom of the mask, below the face. The face of the mask is a large oval made of dried black resin, painted with white and yellow features and geometric patterns. There are three concentric circles on the forehead, four concentric circles for the eyes and cheeks, vertical lines decorating the eyebrows and a small semi-circle mouth forming a smile. The face has protruding triangular nose and eyebrows made of balsa wood.

Rod Puppet2872/35 a-c

Rod puppet named Rama. The head (part a) has a white face with black painted eyes and brows and a red smiling mouth. Pompoms hang from above each ear. Long, luxuriantly curled black hair is topped by a high, elaborate, multicoloured headdress. The gold torso (part b) is partially covered by a beaded, red velvet bib, with a matching apron falling from the waist. Pink satiny flaps hang from the sides of the apron. A long sarong hides a wooden stick (part c) that extends up through the torso and into the puppet’s head to control its movement. The arms are moveable at shoulder and elbow by wooden sticks attached to each hand.

Small wooden figure depicting a man. The man has a large head with a heavy brow bone. The whites of his eyes are made out of plastic pieces which are hollow in the middle. The man’s left eye has two circles, the smaller of which is upraised. His right eye is only formed from one circle. His nose is wide and flat. His mouth is a uniform rectangular shape. The man’s ears are rectangular as well. He has a wide, pronounced clavicle. The man’s arms are curved around his body creating a gap between his elbows and his waist. His hands are pressed to his thighs but he does not have fingers. He has a rounded belly. His legs are pressed together and end in a point, without feet. From the man’s head down to his lower back, he has a pronounced spine. In between his shoulder blades, there is a metal hook in a hole. In his lower back there is another hole.

Dart Quiver2814/46 a-t

Dark brown wooden dart holder (part a), with 19 darts (parts b-t). Quiver is long and cylindrical and narrows slightly towards the base. Made of palm wood, with resin around the base. String is tied around the rim and attaches to a lid woven in a zig zag pattern. There is a circular wooden bead attached to the string. Inside the quiver there is a bundle of sticks wrapped in twine to hold the darts in place. Each dart is composed of a thin wooden stick with cotton tied to the tips with a thin piece of string.

Bureru Spirit Mask2814/15 a-c

Long tubular mask made of balsa wood. Mask is a long hollow cylinder with ears or wings (parts b & c) protruding from holes at its sides. It is decorated with black and brown geometric patterns composed of triangles and squares. The face is a brown circle with oval eyes, semi-circle cheeks, a carved mouth and protruding eyebrows and nose. Ears are circular and are decorated with a starburst design on one side.
